I think it's a combination of flavor and addictiveness. People think pure tobacco "stinks to high heaven" as jewunit put it, so they add in sugar and a bunch of other shit to make it taste better and feel smoother. Saltpeter goes in to make it burn better.
The extra ddictiveness is just speculation, but I know a lot of Marb and Camel smokers don't feel quite satisfied by the nicotine in an American Spirit. Some people switch to additive free tobacco to reduce their dependence before going cold turkey too.

nat shermans and american spirits smell better to me than most cigs.....i have been thinking about trying to throw some tobacco plants into my veg room for shits and giggles too.

Ya, the statement said no purpose, not not purpose in cigarettes. If you want to know it's typical purpose, you can buy the dictionary for I'm guessing a grand, since I only have access to the index.

Well I can tell you its typical purpose: it's a diprotic solvent, and a not-uncommon reagent in certain syntheses.
That quote was from the wikipedia page which talks about a handful of uses. In the context, it's clear to anyone with a high school graduate level of reading comprehension that the purpose is unknown in cigarettes. You been eating paint chips lately, or just getting persnickity for the fun of it?

I thought the english was pretty straightforward (I've been reading at a college level since the 5th grade by the way).
Track down the source of that quote. The source they use is about.com (not a credible source), which is based on an incomplete reading of a lengthy report. You can't report that something doesn't say something, when the source that you use to justify that isn't meant to address that issue.
By the same logic, I could argue that ketchup has no purpose, because the report doesn't give one.

Luckily for me neither you nor I are in fifth grade anymore, so it's really irrelevant.
The validity of the "fact" isn't what we were arguing. Saying ketchup (or catsup if you will) is useless isn't drawing a parallel to what they're saying.
Now if we were talking about hot dogs, and I said ketchup has no use, do you think I would mean at all, or just for hot dogs? It doesn't take a genius to figure out that, in context, I mean just for hot dogs. Whether the statement is true or not really has nothing to do with the argument, since you weren't disputing it's usefulness in cigarettes alone.
