do you also find that it helps to have a rag or something handy to wrap around your fingers and hands to stop the bleeding in the car ride to the hospital to get stitched up?

Protip: If you are cutting them with a steel blade or have a stainless sink just run cold water on the metal and put your face over it. The steel neutralizes the onion.
Quote:
This is speculation on my part - if you know more about the chemistry behind this phenomenon, please feel free to write me. It makes sense to me that the sulfur from the onion/garlic/fish would be attracted to and bind with one or more of the metals in stainless steel. Formation of such compounds is what makes stainless steel stainless, after all. Onions and garlic contain amino acid sulfoxides, which form sulfenic acids, which then form a volatile gas (propanethiol S-oxide), which forms sulfuric acid upon exposure to water. These compounds are responsible for burning your eyes while cutting onions and also for their characteristic scent. If the sulfur compounds bind to the steel, then the odor is removed from your fingers.

the blindfold magically doubles as...a bandage! aha! but now I know putting water on the blade instead of blood solves the problem

Health foods.

Chew gum/bread and avoid the core of the onion.
I'm weird about onions. I never tear up when cutting them, but I do like 20 minutes later when they're all gone and away
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head. Why should that mean it isn't real?

At my last job I used to have to cut hundreds of onions in a week and the only thing that stopped the tears was weeks of immunity building up. The reason you tear up is because the acids in the onion go airborne when you cut them and they end up burning your eyes and nasal passages. After you've cut more than a dozen onions daily you stop tearing up unless you have to cut hundreds at a times or if they are super ripe from age....... then nothing stops the tears. I used to cut them in halves and soak them in water while cutting the others, it seemed to help but not when you're doing too many.

After enough experience in the restaurant industry my eyes have grown such a tolerance to onions that I barely even notice it anymore
