Engineer's wet dream..
    #561918 - 06/04/11 06:08 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Toured a GE Jet Turbine Manufacturing Plant the other day, shit was crazy :homerdrool: got to see a GE90 in the various stages of assembly, and then got to talk to some of the technicians about the specifics of that engine. Needless to say I thought I had died and gone to heaven (being a mechanical engineer and all :dancer:)

Anybody else here share my fetish for big pieces of engineering works of art?

BTW here is a picture I found of the GE90, I was not allowed to bring in cameras of any type, had to leave my cell phone with security.

notice the two support struts on top, that's to keep the engine from twisting itself apart due to the high torque generated b/w the compressor and thrust fans in the front, and the high and low pressure turbines on the back. (record set at 127,900 lbf of thrust) :awesurprise:

peace,

Hmm i wonder how much thrust the Saturn 5 Rocket produced?

Not the GE90, but another impressive turbine, the A380. The GE90 actually doesn't employ metallic fan blades anymore on the thrust fan assembly, it is a type of composite material. Notice how soon after the fan blade is released, the blades opposite the release scrape the side first just due to the mass imbalance on the fan assembly...all of this happening in a few milliseconds :awesurprise:

You don't hafta be an engineer to appreciate beautiful technology...nothing quite like an engine as big as a bus with tolerances below 5/1000th of an inch (0.127 mm) The high pressure stages of the compressor had loose blades that you could wiggle around with ur hand just to account for the thermal expansion and the lengthening of parts under the incredible centripetal forces generated. :jawdrop:

Right on dude :whoo: I went to college but I'm a firm believer in the self-taught academic, and I myself practice this outside of my major. Some of the smartest people I have ever met never wasted their money at a University and instead utilized the local library, organizations, and recently the interwebs as their self-motivated university :pipesmoke:

I know who I'm gonna come to the next time I want a challenging conversation or just need some help with something I don't know much about :gethigh:

By all means, I'll have a discussion on anything I know a little about, but what I really like is when I'm presented with something I know nothing about, and have to educate myself on the subject :yesnod:

haha I am a skinny white dude who runs cross country and has several metal plates in my body, and I've broken a hip already...I'm in my 20s but I tend to volunteer for dangerous jobs like catching trusses as they come in from a boomtruck...straddling the top of a 20 foot wall and trying to stabilize 400lb trusses in breezy conditions with no fall protection...I guess you could say I'm kinda dumb/smart and extremely lucky :dumblol:

cool stuff.  The parent company of the place I work for is an aerospace/defense contractor.  They do some seriously amazing stuff and I've had the pleasure of being able to thumb through some of their design docs and diagrams.  One of our clients is Boeing and many of their planes includes pieces from the shop next door to my office.  Kinda neat when I go to an airport and see them knowing which component on board belonged to our shop

That's not really a relevant comparison since the GE90 is a turbine jet engine and the Saturn 5 is a liquid fueled rocket. Completely different mechanisms of thrust generation. Plus the number he quoted was lbf of torque, not Newton Seconds of thrust.

Actually its pounds force (lbf) of thrust...thrust is defined as a reaction force, not an impulse, which is force multiplied by the time the force was applied (N*s).

and in the actual way the force is generated is sorta the same on a very fundemental level, the main portion of the thrust generated by the GE90 is due to the giant fan assembly on the front accelerating air...this results in a reaction force on the fan blades which results in axial thrust. The rocket runs off of the same gas-acceleration principle, but instead of just accelerating a gas, it produces shit tons of gas, heats the fuck out of it so that great pressure is generated behind the nozzle, increasing flow and causing a massive acceleration and ejection of a great deal of mass in a short time. The reason limiting factor in jet engines is the presence of moving parts that rip themselves apart if pushed too fast, as where with rockets the only moving parts are the pumps used to move the fuel into the combustion chamber.

I love science!
