$133 for a Venus Fly Trap?
    #535931 - 03/11/11 01:41 PM (13 years, 11 days ago)

http://cgi.ebay.com/Maroon-Monster-Venus-Flytrap-Rare-Carnivorous-Fly-Trap-/320669641823?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aa9666c5f

Didn't realize people are that crazy for carnivorous plants.

On another note I have been thinking about adding a few of these to my garden (not the one in the ad lol) in case there are ever flies that I don't know about in my garden.

How difficult are these to cultivate? I'm assuming they can't be cloned?

I mean, I've got all this HID lighting...it already saves me wasting my money on droogs, but if I could grow a few of those on the side I'd be all set

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

I've got one and have raised a few different species

they aren't terribly difficult to raise (and don't need to be fed) but the are extremely sensitive to things/ Using tap water will usually kill them, you basically have to stick to rain water and keep the temperature above 60 or higher for some of the less hardy species

the opening and closing of a fly trap is actually extremely fast growth and can be used to make your plant increase in size very rapidly but as you might expect it causes large amount of stress on the plant

the details are still fairly unknown but the plant has 2 lobes near the hinge that increase (grow) in size to close the plant.

to open back up the other side grows (at a much slower pace) to return to a state of equilibrium.
some species will actually double in size during this cycle

i also used to have a red dragon fly trap that was really finicky. If I forgot to water it it would wilt but would rise back up in about an hour when it did get watered.

You can clone them. I have been looking at some other varieties, like another called B52, which is known to have traps 2" long. The guy said it was a tissue culture that he snagged.

I know you can buy them at the store for $5 but some of the other varieties I have seen lately are really cool. Like one called "Red Dragon" and its completely maroon/dark purple.

If people are really paying that much for carnivorous plant varieties like that and if you could learn some tissue culture techniques and learn how to baby these things, you could make some money.

Of course I found all this when I was looking for other plants such as B. Caapi and P. Virdis among other things.
