Can plants get too much light (sunburn)?
    #327344 - 12/05/09 11:46 AM (7 months, 20 days ago)

About a week ago, all my plants had a bright, healthy-looking green color.  Then I added a few more lights, and now most of them have a lot of really dark green leaves and some dark red stems.  One plant that was right under a light is all dark green.  I have a few different strains growing and they all developed this problem.  I know some strains are supposed to be dark green but this looks as though they're sunburned or overly suntanned.  It does not look like a healthy tan.

I figured they were getting too much of a good thing, so I switched them from 24 hour light to 16/8.  I'm currently waiting to see if this works.

In the meantime...did I do the right thing?  Were they getting too much light?  Did they get so dark because they were trying to protect themselves from the excessive light?

Describe your lights and how far away were they from the lights?

Whether indoors or outdoors and not matter what type of plant, make sure not to wet foilage with anything whilst intense light (or the midday sun) is present - This will cause a burning affect as the moisture on foilage acts like a magnifying glass.

I would say that the lighting is not the problem. But would lean towards a deficiency in nutrients with the red stems. Could just be the strain your growing too?

The decrease of light hours will probly provoke flowering also.  Being you went from 24 to 16 hours.

The darker the green the better isn't it? I would look for scaring or dry leaves

how bout posting some pictures of your babies?

And then get a little more information as far as lighting, soil or hydro, strains growing, etc.

We could then give you a bit better advice.

No matter how much light you add it won't be like the sun and light burn would lighten the plants not darken them. May be a nutrient deficiency caused by the light. The plants are getting more light so they are using nutrients at a faster rate.

No dark leaves is not a sign of health. I had like evergreen leaves on my plant but it was really unhealthy. Cuz of Miracle Grow.

Really? I'm using Miracle Grow All Purpose soluble fertiliser on my plant right now (mainly because of the high Phosphorus). It's nearly 4 months old, am I doing something wrong? Has it got too much Nitrogen in it or something? It seems healthy (dark green).

It has too much everything really.

Mircle Grow isn't a good choice of feed at all.

+10 It does have to much of everything. Do your plants a favor and get them good nutes/soil. They will thank you for it.
