I heard that switching the lights off 24 hours before you harvest helps to increase potency, since the potency is lowest in midday...........is this true?

no, I believe it helps pack on more weight but don't quote me on that. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with potency.

I'd let someone else chime in before deciding. What I've read on the subject hasn't convinced me it's all that important but because I've never actually done it perhaps someone else has experience in this area.

herbalists say that trichome production is peak at the end of night
so you would chop it when your day light cycle would begin.

I think all it does is give the plant 24 more hours to grow before you chop it, keeping it dark adds nothing. How would it? I've read it's supposed to stress the plant into producing more thc or something but I don't buy it. Either cut it or keep it on 12/12 for 24 more hours imo.

You don't believe it so it isn't true?
A entire industry of people who make essential oils believe it's true, and I'm pretty sure it's based on science.

eh, it's all theory and no fact honestly. Most people say 48 hrs or more of darkness, not 24. Personally, if your plants tell you they're ready, they're ready. They don't need any additional time then you've already given them.

I think the theory behind this is that one of the plant's uses for THC specifically (not CBD, CBN, etc. they just serve as anti parasitics and anti desiccants, I think) is a type of sunblock. THC absorbs UV light very well, but this causes it to break down into CBN (Once again, I think). So during the day, THC is used up, and would be replenished at night. Harvesting after a dark period won't increase cannabinoid content, it would just make a greater percent of the cannabinoids THC. I'm quite sure it wouldn't affect yield other than the plant might stretch in the night. But like Coda said, all theory and no fact. It makes sense to me, but I have never actually tried it. If it is true, it will just result in a more sativa/THC-like high, so it's really a matter of preference.

Trichome production is stimulated by UVB light, like you said, as a form of sunblock. I don't believe it is the THC that absorbs the UVB light, but rather the fibrous mat located underneath the head of the trichome (which is what releases the THC into the trich head).
I'll have to review that video though to be 100% sure on that, so don't quote me on it yet

All cannabinoids absorb UV light. I think its presence on the area underneath stimulates the production of THC so that it is there to absorb it. The resin sphere is kind of a lens that focuses the UVB photons for using in the process to make THC. Here's a little more on that.
