Senate could sit into summer to pass marijuana bills
    #833064 - 05/12/18 11:07 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

Quote:

The Trudeau government's representative in the Senate says the chamber will extend its session into the summer if that's what it takes to pass two new laws to regulate recreational cannabis use.
Sen. Peter Harder told CBC Radio's The House he's made it clear to his colleagues that bills C-45 and C-46 must be passed before the chamber breaks for the summer.
"We will sit 'til it's done," he said.
"We have an obligation as a Senate to deal with the legislation that's before us before we take a summer break."

However, the Senate faces a narrow time window for getting the two bills to the floor. The upper chamber is only scheduled to sit for another six weeks and the final vote on C-45 is expected on or before June 7, with legalization expected to follow eight to 12 weeks later.

SAJLMFAO  The Liberals are going after political points here because now it will appear that the Conservatives senators are not willing to stay through their summer break to work on bill C-46, the really funny thing about bill C-46 is its coming into effect clause that states bill C-46 will not become law until six months after it receives royal ascent. So even if they passed
Bill C-46 today it still won't be in effect for six months and bill C-45 will be passed on or by June 7. BTW while newspapers have been guessing the start date for legal cannabis will be 8 to 12 weeks after June 7 because that is what the provinces asked for BUT the Liberals still have the choice of the date and have NOT stated a date other then being sometime this summer but it will most likely be one month after passing so expect legal cannabis by the second week of July in Canada.
