2017 - What kind of soil are you using?
    #825585 - 04/25/17 06:20 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

What brand/specific product are you using?

If homemade, what is your recipe?

What additives/supplements are you using and why?

Are you happy with your soil? Why or why not? What would you improve on?

What is the best soil you've used and why?

Are you indoors or outdoors?

Any interesting observations or notable experiences?

Coco with sunshine4 wi perlite.

Shrimp compost contains chitonase keeps bugs away.
Alfalpha for nitrogen amd hormones
Kelp meal micros and hormones and good soil microbes.
Diatomaceous earth for bugs and micros
Rock dust
Bone blood meal
Myco and bacteria
Leondorite for humic acids helps bacteria and chelation.
Gypsum. Adds calcium and sulphur keeps soil open as peat breaks down aswell.

Keep it pretty lite as sorta use hybrid of synthetic and organic nutes.

Im currently using FoxFarm soil, OceAn Forest.

Im 90% pleased with it. The missing 10% is all the pieces of wood bark in the soil that i had to pick out due to preference. And its a little spendy like $25 for a large bag.

But its really nice soil for sure. Packed with ferilizer too.

I've never thought about using a good portion of that. Very interesting!

I have heard a lot of praise for Fox Farms soil. I was just reading a debate on another forum discussing the differences between Miracle Gro and FF Ocean Forest. It seems that they both have nutrients added to the soil itself. I am trying to justify the price for FF and am having a hard time. I'd like to try 10 plants in 5 gallon containers, but that'd be quite an investment.

---

Have any of you guys heard of a brand called Kellogg? I stopped in at local shop and one of the clerks recommended it highly. There are apparently a lot of different choices, but they have a version that is almost identical to Ocean Forest and it can sometimes be found at Walmart for 1/3 of the price. I can't find much info on the web about it besides a lot of negative Home Depot reviews.

Yeah ive seen that Kellogs. I believe that kellogs is the cereal brand too. They probably compost their own waste from making cereals.

Ive seen a "natures choice" from miracle grow that looks pretty legit. Havent used it thoy, my GF uses it for her garden. Looks similar in texture to FF ocean forest.

I wondered if it was the same family/company! That certainly would make sense and would also be a big nod toward Kellogg's contributing to environmental sustainability.

I didn't know about the "Natures Choice" version. I'll have to check that out. I wonder if it would have the same nute burn issues that the regular stuff does. :hamsterdance:

I can't recall if I'm allowed to post links to other forums, but I can certainly PM the debate between Miracle Gro and Fox Farms to you if you're interested. It's got a lot of really interesting feedback from a wide variety of people.
