people use sand to cover the tops of pots to slow the bugs down. But there are covers you can build to keep the soil protected. I want to build some sort of splashguard type thing for the tops of my pots. Every time you water you splash tiny amounts of hydroponic nutrient salts into the air which land on the buds.

Never thought of that with the nute splash. Can you use a drip system? That would cut out any splash back. I've decided to use a silkscreen to cover my buckets. That should keep those little root eaters out and still allow the air to get through.

Once you dry out nutrients they can become airborne as soon as they get disturbed. Like right when the water kicks on. Think about all the dried crusty nutrients you have on things, at the bottom of flood trays, etc.
I'd heard of some people who created a physical barrier between the medium and plants for that reason(even heard of a guy who grew with well-composted human feces that did that) but it was this photo this really did it for me. Something I've wanted to implement but never found the motivation for doing it.

Wow yep I can now see how that can dry and get dispersed into the air and then onto smoke.Thinking I've got some coco mat that would go over the drip halos and that should do the trick.Thanks for the info.

Applied nematodes-sf today. Traps have got the adult population down considerably. Looks like I might be on the down hill side of this.

Never used nematodes yet but have heard great things about them. Some people add them to the growmedium as a preventative also. Sorry to hear about the Gnats..hope you find a cure best of luck

Between sticky traps, dunks set out in small containers with hydroton and nematodes their population is down.

They can still live in hydroton can infect hydro using clay pebbles. Sand works becuase it drys out. Hydroton stays moist so not what u want. Cheers!

I don't know. I am running constant drip in clay balls so there is always water but no standing water. For the time being I am just covering the buckets with sticky traps. Not many left.

Can crumble some dunks on there too will hit the larva. Or some decent steong pwroxide sprayed on the top will zap those mofos

I've had absolutely no luck using hydrogen peroxide. I've read over and over that it's totally safe and won't screw with plants, but just the regular 2-3% stuff from the grocery store (even diluted - 1:5 or 1:10 ratio) has left noticeable damage on my DWC and Kratky experiments and never seems to help with mites or fungus gnats.
I'm not saying it isn't a good idea or that it won't work, just that it hasn't worked at all for me in regard to bugs. It works fine on algae growth, root rot, and stem rot though.
I've actually had better luck just rinsing my plants off with significant water flow than using peroxide, but I have yet to find a permanent solution.
