If the plants are in veg you can just use a garden bug bomb.

There made for use in gardens and around fruits and vegetables.

The poison in them is made of chrysanthemum flowers. The poison is called pyrethrum.

Make sure peroxide is gone before using dunks as the peroxide will kill the bacteria that makes them work. Cheers

That is not logical at all. As there is no food source in either.

Fungus gnat larvae primarily eat Fungus in soil, but in the absence of fungal food sources will nibble on the ends and small hairs of young roots. This is the practical reason why fungus gnats should not be allowed to multiply without restraint, as they can stunt the plants' growth.

Additionally, hydroton with regular nutrient feed can support small amounts of fungus...and the pores in the clay provide the perfect moist environment for the adult gnats to lay their eggs.

I just don't see gnats hiding in hydroton or rockwool as they would just die. It's not like the gnats know this will eventually be used with plants. Also all the hydroton and rockwool I buy and use are sealed in plastic. Just doesn't seem that feasible.

But it is feasible to get an infection after you start using your sterile medium

I made the mistake of getting a bag of potting soil for other plants. Before I even had cannabis plants around I noticed some black flying insects around... sure enough now that I'm here with pure coco I've noticed thrips on an un-rooted clone.  It might have also been the cat that brought an infection inside, but its to coincidental that I got them around the time I got the soil.

Oooh ok I see what you're saying now. Yea Psychotron covered it pretty well. The gnat eggs were not in the media to begin with, but like tvbfe said

The adult gnats are drawn to moisture and biological metabolites. They were probably attracted to the older hydroton in the grow after leaving the soil of the houseplant. You can actually utilize this to build a trap with apple cider vinegar, since the smell of rotten fruit seems to attract them like crazy.

I am making traps for the adults but decided to order in some nematodes like suggested to kill larva ect. They are not only living in the hydro but if it was nt for my constant attacks on them with the shop vac and three times daily stirring up the top couple inches of clay balls and traps they would be thriving. Momma said thered be days like these. lol

I've had fungus gnats munching on my cube trays before . They were covered with wax paper . They're hard to get rid of . Had to switch to a closed tub

Layed awake last night thinking of how to in-close my system.Wondering if I could cover the tops of buckets with shrink wrap or would that cause more problems for the plants like stem rot? Also thought maybe some of that coco mat.
