Anyone into collecting Records here? * 1
    #823758 - 02/15/17 06:08 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

What up neeguses?  Are any of you guys into collecting records?

Went to a Lilys show about two weeks ago and picked up some '45s without owning a record player so naturally I picked up a turntable in order to enjoy them.

Now I have a couple of records in my collection including Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia Band, and a White Hills album, with some more on the way.

I recently dumped all of my mp3s in order to archive my digital collection in FLAC format which is cool and all but I like owning physical copies of all of my music so yea.

What records do you own and why do you collect them??

Assuming he has a sweet stash?? Haha I just saw that record at the store the other day. It was pretty dinged up so I passed on it.

@Drawde you'd be surprised at how many deals one can find while hunting at garage sales and thrift stores.

Ah must be nice to find a good ol stash like your guises father's stashes. I know my uncle has a bunch of metal albums from the 70's and 80's but he's kind of a faggot so I won't even ask him.

I'll eventually post pictures of all of my finds. If anyone is ever willing to trade records just hit me up or post in this thread!

I know I have a couple records from my younger days...Quiet Riot, Def Leppard and David Lee Roth. They're buried somewhere in my old junk, I'll try to find them and post pics.

The first 2 albums I have to showcase are some 45s by a New York psychedelic/blues outfit, Dead Heavens. Caught them live about 2 weeks ago alongside 2 other bands and picked up some 45s that were available:

Dead Heavens - Feel Low b/w I'm So Green - 45

Dead Heavens - Adderall Highway b/w Hyacinth - 45

collecting records is more of a hipster thing.

Nice man! I really love Inca Roads on there but all the songs are great!

Ok for anyone still interested, next up is a classic IMO, it's Cat's Under The Stars by the JGB (Jerry Garcia Band)

favorite song would have to be the title track, Cat's Under The Stars

I own a small collection of hip-hop records.

I own them cause i own two numark turntables and a mixer and i enjoy Djing with hip-hop records (cuttin 'n scratching).

I have a couple of dance records, but want more so i can mix some EDM vinyl.

Next project of mine is building a heavy wooden table to DJ on since these big folding tables i bought are wayyy too flimsy for DJing.

Its not too hard, but it takes practice to make it sound good and not to skip the needle off the groove. Definitely a learning curve.

I have a pic but its in my phone and my gallery is "full". i will try see if i can get it.

The next record up to spin is the classic Pink Floyd album: Meddle

Once again the sleeve is old and fucked up but the record is in pristine condition, found this on sale for 4 bucks, had to pick it up.

Hell yea man! What's your favorite song off the album?

For the next album I have uploaded a limited edition 45 split by The Lilys/Big Trouble, got this one at a Lilys reunion show a few weeks ago. Great songs on this record. The whole sleeve is in perfect condition although it's a DIY pressing.

I used to hang out at a record store and the owner held that record for me until I came in. He told me if I didn't buy it that day it wouldn't be there the next.
So I bought it. It is #4947 of 10,000

I'm not a collector but when I see something I like I buy it.

My girlfriend has a much larger collection than mine. I just have a select few I've picked up over the years.
We need to get our record player hooked up again. That Double Live is actually pretty kickass.

Thats dope! It's hard to find women collectors.

I'll keep an eye out for a copy once I go hunting again.

All right ppls, next up is a Grateful Dead classic album, Shakedown Street circa 1978. Includes my favorite GD song Fire On The Mountain along with some other classics like Shakedown Street, France, From The Heart Of Me, Serengeti, Stagger Lee, and All New Minglewood Blues.

The album cover is in a great condition, a little worn but nothing noticeable, the record has a few minor scratches but plays perfectly.

That cover looks like it was illustrated by the same guy who did Fritz the Cat

I think Robert Crumb did Fritz the Cat, Gilbert Shelton is the artist credited for the artwork.

Now that you mention it R.C. was a part of the underground comix scene in the 60's and 70's that Gilbert Shelton was also a part of, maybe RC's style rubbed off on Shelton?

Mmm I really can't say with certainty but the line work on the cars in the bottom of the cover make it seem like it was done with some fancy paint markers like Prismas or Copic Markers.

I only say that because the line work is nearly perfect. Plus in the 70's and 80's those markers were some of the primary tool for artists/designers.

SO the next album to showcase is from an awesome psychedelic space rock outfit called White Hills. These guys use a lotta drone work and ambiance to create their sonic landscapes, great music for acid trips tbh.

White Hills - Abstractions & Mutations

Album sleeve and record are in pristine condition.

This album is an interesting one, it's called the Psychedelic Shack and its by The Temptations. The whole album is their take on the psychedelic movement going on at the time but it's hard to say if they were actually into psychedelics or they were just capitalizing off the movement/ideas.

Some of the titles include: Side one

    "Psychedelic Shack" – 3:51
"You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" – 2:46
"Hum Along and Dance" – 3:53
"Take a Stroll Thru Your Mind" – 8:37

Side Two

    "It's Summer" – 2:36
    "War" – 3:11
"You Need Love Like I Do (Don't You)" – 3:58
    "Friendship Train" – 7:49

So I came into possession of this album through my girlfriend, she's really into the Temptations and happens to be into psychedelics as well. She was really surprised/stoked to find her favorite band have an album dedicated to psychs. It's a pretty good album, album sleeve and record are in pristine condition.

Me waiting for Gask to post pics...

The next album is a classic metal album by the one and only TOOL! This is the Opiate Ep

Released in 1992, it was a landmark release for Tool since it gave people a preview to the coming Undertow album a year later. Found this new for 10$ so it was a good buy, sleeve and record are in pristine condition.

I have some records, but I don't collect them.  If I knew for sure I would never have to move again, and I had bunch of disposable income, I'd collect them.  I love records!

Hey Learyfan! That badass! Would you have some pictures for the thread?

I agree man, once you start getting into it, space literally becomes a problem.

Yeah.  Someone should invent a really good way to display LPs on a wall.  Other than big ass frames or just sticking a pin or nail through the record.  I'd love to have a room where it was wall to wall, top to bottom, mint condition LPs.  That would be really nice.  Plus it'll save a little room, like you're saying.

I guess that's pretty cool, but I'd just prefer it without the frame.  Just album after album, side by side, up and down the wall somehow.
