Medical marijuana treatment centers approved by state (New Hampshire)

Facilities must now seek local approval, could be open in 8-9 months

CONCORD, N.H. —Medical marijuana is one step closer to reality in New Hampshire.

The first applicants to open medical marijuana facilities in New Hampshire have been approved by the state, but it will likely be months before they open.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that Prime Alternative Treatment Centers of New Hampshire, Temescal Wellness, Inc., and Sanctuary ATC were selected to begin the post-selection registration process.

These three companies, chosen from a pool of 14 applicants, will be able to operate four medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state.

“Those applications were huge. We're talking some of them in excess of 1,000 pages, so we went through a very, very careful selection process,” said John Martin, DHHS Bureau of Licensing & Certification Manager.

Temescal Wellness has been chosen to operate two of the four dispensaries.

“The people who formulated this company are experts in the field, absolutely,” said Dr. Gary Woods, a retired orthopedic hand surgeon who serves on the board of directors for Temescal Wellness.

“I think we've had a lot of emotional discussion, but we're trying to transition that just from the emotional component to a real scientific basis to see what is good and if necessary what is bad as well,” said Woods.

Dispensary locations haven't been chosen, but they will be located in four different geographic regions of the state.

There will be a public input process and local approval will be needed. Woods says it's been a thorough process so far-- and that will continue.

“I think it's going to be done right, instead of just having it out in the open to begin with. Let's find out how it works for these medical entities that have been identified,” said Woods.

"Now that the selections have been made, we will work closely with the selected treatment centers to make them operational as soon as possible so that they can open their doors and begin to provide relief to the individuals who are in need and suffering from serious medical conditions," Commissioner Nicholas Toumpas said in a written statement.

The treatment centers must now begin the process of getting local approvals and setting up operations. DHHS officials said that process will likely take eight to nine months before the centers are open for business.

The specific locations of the centers haven't been determined, the department said. The applicants will have to get input from local officials, residents and prospective patients.

DHHS said each treatment center must submit its application for registration no later than Aug. 27, and then it will be subject to a compliance inspection. If it passes, it will get a registration certificate and will then be able to cultivate marijuana.

The department said it plans to start issuing registry identification cards to patients about six weeks before a treatment center is open for business. An announcement will be posted on the DHHS website when it's ready to accept applications from patients and caregivers.

“Today, we reached a huge milestone in the therapeutic cannabis program,” said Martin.
