Did the dime in a jar tek with a few oz of shake iv got to get the kief off and have been topping bowls with all all week.

As far as the kif goes, I put mine in a film canister and use a chillum with a small bowl. I push the bowl straight into the canister and pack the bowl by scraping the tip of the bowl across the top of the semi packed kief. Dont pack it too tight otherwise u wont be able to draw on it.

I wouldn't say a waste of time since u get to smoke the kief anyway later on, but it's not something I do all the time in fact it's been about a year n a half since I collected any kief.

It's not as if grinding weed removes all the trichomes. 
In fact, if you break your weed with your fingers, you knock off or crush just as many trichomes; the difference is that I get some of the lost trichomes back when they fall through the kief screen. If you don't have a grinder with a kief screen, I'd venture to say you'd be smoking MORE trichomes than somebody who breaks by hand!
The bud does not get noticeably weaker because you break it does it?
Same thing is true in a grinder.
With regard to putting a coin in the grinder, what actually happens is that you pulverize more plant material, which makes it look like a ton of kief, but all you've done is forced tiny bits of leaf and bud through the screen.
Real "kief" is essentially dry-screened hash, and consists only of trichomes that fall through the screen in the grinding process or a very limited amount of plant material.

That's a fair point about the trichomes getting lost when you break up the bud by hand. I hadn't thought of that actually.
It may be aesthetics, I don't know, but ground up weed looks sucky to me. I just love squishing a nice nug into my bowl. I think it might even taste better, too. Wouldn't you rather eat steak than hamburger?
