The majority of scholars don't believe this marks the end of the world, just a giant shift/change of some kind or another.

This 12/21/12 is a bunch of hype! In the beginning it was 12/23/12 then became the 21st. If anything 12/12/12 should have marked the end of an era. Which by the way was my wedding day. Just my opinion.

What I find funny is how we take the mayan calender for source of the doomsday, but we don't take their explanation of that date ... It is not supposed to be the end of the world but the end of the cycle we are in at the moment ... It only means a new cycle will start and doesn't mean at all the doomsday, yet the media need sensationalism, so of course they won't listen the version of the culture that made that calender...

Yeah and then when nothing happens everyone will say that the Mayans were wrong. 
That would be like starting a prophecy stating that the world will end on December 31st at midnight, cause that's when our calendar ends, then saying that whoever came up with that calendar was wrong when life goes on on January 1st.
