Building a grow box

I'm getting ready to build my grow box I, have the dimensions down and figured what I basically need. My question is what do you guys use for wood? Like fiberboard or plywood and what is a good thickness? I'm pretty set on a 4x2x6 with a 600 w hps. It will be well ventilated with a cooled reflector. Thanks!

Does it have to be a box? I prefer to make mine out of blk/wht poly vinyl and pvc piping. Works great for me. Not super sturdy though.

Then plywood works great. You should just make sure to apply a sealant on the wood though, helps with humidity related issues down the line.

This probably a stupid question but would painting the the box be good enough of a sealant?
I was burning one in the room I plan on using and I was just wondering, im gonna have my box in my basement in the back room. It's right underneath the back porch, which isn't a big deal as far as traffic goes, but should I be concerned with infrared seeking law enforcement? The porch has a roof and shit it's just not enclosed.

I never worry about FLIR, that needs a warrant, and is not utilized all that often.
Flat white paint should be used on inside, I would just go with a standard sealant on the outside.

Ok, I built my box and, like I said before, it is 4x2x6 and the spare room it is in is 16x5x7. I'm thinking about ventilation and my plans were to exhaust in to the room the box is in. Now the room tends to get a little chilly in the winter, dipping into the lower 50s degrees F. so I was thinking maybe pull air in from the heat ducting that runs through the room or pull from the adjacent room? Any advice on whether this would be alright, or maybe there is a better way?
I plan on going the AK47 route and was also wondering if the carbon filter would suffice as it a very aromatic strain.

Hmmm... Given those temps, I'd maybe flower at night to take advantage of the cool air. You should run it and measure the temps inside. The 50* temps might work out well for you. The hotter it is, the smellier it gets but your scrubber should do the trick.

Do some dry runs, that way we can work out the kinks before the plants are in there. Then we'll see what needs to be done.

That's true, I'm probably getting ahead of myself anyway, once I get my light, fans, etc. and actually make it a grow room winter will probably be mostly over, lol. I hope I'm not asking ridiculous questions, I'm just excited to get things going and I do lurk these forums every spare chance I get as well as the rest of this site. Thanks hawk I appreciate the replies.
Do you think I could intake from AND exaust the air of the room the box will be in or might it be too small?

Your not asking ridiculous questions. They're perfectly valid.
You want to have fresh air coming into the room if you are going to use the room air as intake and exhaust into it as well.

Ok I got my light today, a digital greenhouse 600 hps with an easy cool 6 reflector. Just wondering, does it matter from which direction you pull the air through the reflector? Stupid question?

Depends on the reflector. Some are designed to pull air a certain way. Since I don't know what reflector you purchased I can't answer that question.

I would have the air flowing from the socket end over the bulb. If that makes sense.

Pull from the socket end? That's what I was leaning towards. Thanks.

No, pull from the other end, so the air is travelling over the bulb, starting at the socket end.

To be honest, I'm a little impatient as I would have to wait for it. I don't know where the hell to get anything in this town. There's definitely no hydro stores so I have to get all that shit online. All I have to deal with for soil is walmart and shit like that, absolutely nothing remotely around me that deals with growing.

Here's some questions Ive been pondering, being that I'm growing in a fairly small area as I am only doing this for personal consumption (I only know 2 or 3 people that smoke) and not for monetary gain, I was wondering the best way to go about making the most out of my area without going overboard. I plan on getting a ten pack of AK47 and I realize that the space will only be good for 3 to 4 ladies tops. Should I germ all ten and surely get 3-4 females? If I get more than that I certainly don't want to dispose of the extras. I wouldn't mind getting 1 male for seeds but, at the same time, reading states that you don't really want to inbreed. Ican easily build a another box for moms and veg. I am very interested in getting good at this hobby but I also don't necessarily need a ridiculous amount of herb laying around and giving to the few people I do know will seem kind of suspicious. I just can't stop thinking about this hobby, lol!

Make another room and keep mother so you can just clone off of them. All you need is some blk/wht polyvinyl, pvc pipe, and a shop light.

So I could probably keep a mother alive for a while even if I'm not going to be growing any for a bit? I'm obviously nowhere near this stage, my mind just keeps turning and some of these things I haven't run across yet. I'm ordering the Jorge Cervantes indoor/outdoor grow bible tomorrow!

You can keep mothers alive indefinitely. Just keep em under a light cycle of at least 18 hours a day.

I'm just thinking here and wondering, I'm not interested in auto flowering strains at all but would it be even possible to keep a mother? wouldn't she flower automatically?

With autos they flower automatically, you can not keep mothers.

Ok, I got my box up and running and been doing some dry runs. My daytime temps stay at a perfect 78 F, but my night temps dip down to 56 F. I was thinking of going out and get a small space heater and running it during the lights out time. Does this sound like a good idea?

That's what I did and last nights temps didn't go below 63 F. I think I'm ok with that. Maybe get it a little higher?

I turned up the heat just a tad bit more and last night's temp didn't go below 70 f. That should be good. Now just waiting for beans to get here!
