Even if you don't get contacts it's still a good idea to get prescription sunglasses. It beats getting eye damage. Also, it can make driving and other activities safer and more more comfortable, especially if you get polarised glasses.
Normal sunglasses will just diminish the amount of light getting through which is still good. However, polarised sunglasses will allow you to see a lot more details because they diminish a lot of glare. This allows you to see through the water if you're on a boat and it helps if there are shitty reflections from rain or fog or what ever when you're driving. You pay just a little more for the polarised version but if you compare the two then you'll notice the difference. Plenty of vehicles accidents have happened due to the blinding effects of light.
