Mn Deficiency?
    #625998 - 06/04/12 01:53 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Now long story short, almost nine days ago, the line I had for my water hose burst (it was cheap, see brokenness excuse before), spewing 100-120 degree Fahrenheit water on BG#2-D. I've switched to hand-jivin' it.

Since then, it has been stressed and its growth rate has slowed.

Despite my circumstances, may I please ask what you more experienced growers would suggest I do?

Aside from that, my other babies seem to be doing well. Only NK-C was dug up (on 4/28) and then had also some of the hot water sprayed on it. I am assuming the combined stress has caused it to lose leaf mass.

NK-D leaf:

Potentially Mn deficient BG#2-D leaf:

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?

All of my plants are from seed

2. How old are your plants?

BG#2-D is 2 months old. NK-D is about 1 month, 10 days old.

3. How tall are your plants?

NK-D is bent over but was nearing 3 ft. BG#2-D is nearly 1 ft. tall

4. What size containers are they planted in?

10 gallon fabric polyprolyene pots

5. What is your soil mix?

Foxfarm Ocean Forest

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use?

Well water, pH about 7.2 (last check, though a long time ago).

I water when the soil dries, except for the incident below.

7. What is the pH of your water?

7.2 more or less. If I could I would have water so pure that not even carbonic acid is present.

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?

Fertilization schedule will be quoted below for convenience

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?

No.

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined?

The Sun.

11. How close are your lights to the plants?

The plants are under a construction which lets light through but does not allow vision of what sis under the glass.

12. What size is your grow space in square feet?

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?

Need I say anything more than the Georgian sun? I live in zone 7b.

14. What is the pH of the soil?

I wish I could tell you.

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space?

Spider mites are around and I can't control flies yet. Soon enough there will be a fine screen so that very few pests get in.

16. How much experience do you have growing?
4 years or so.

Six seedlings already approx. a week or two old were obtained. These will be referred to as NK

A seed of OG Kush was also started alongside 9 bagseeds from some chronic stuff as of today (4/16). The bagseeds will be referred to as BG#2. with letters designating specific plants.

I apologize for not being clear enough (EDIT: I am really baked, that's probably why, too). I was trying to give a complete picture of the how this deficiency could have happened. Thank you for your patience with me.

Essentially, I have two questions:

1. Does the leaf below (BG#2-D) look like an early stage manganese deficiency? I included the other leaf (NK-D) for convenient comparison only.

A evidenced by the picture, the apical leaf tissue nearest to the veins and base is yellowing while none of the lower leaves are doing this.

2. If so, what is your recommended course of action?

Well for one you're not checking the pH of your water.  You need to do this every time you water, and do it after you add your nutrients.  This should be taken care of before anything else.

Second the way to fix it would be to add a product called cal/mag.

That could be VERY early Mg def.

I add cal/mag every few watering just to make sure that I don't run into these issues.

I'm not real specific with it in all honesty.  I just add about 2-4 mls per gallon depending on my mood.  Every 2-3 waterings.

Karode on shroomery suggested the same malady. The only difference is that he recommended magnesium sulfate.  I have this on hand. Would you recommend I use that or fork out the cash for some cal-mag? I'd hope not to have to, but I want to listen to your expertise.

Thank you! As soon as I get the post count, you will get a 5 :mushroom2:  rating from me.

Also, I was thinking about using some pool strips to test my water's pH since it shoudnt be too far from 7 in one direction or another. What pH strips would you recommend?

I'd buy this for your pH needs.  It includes pH up and down.

Epsom salt works just fine.  I would add 5 mls per gallon every 3rd watering.

For pH down I have citric acid (my grow is food grade/organic and I'm trying my best to keep it that way) and I looked up the MSDS for liquid pH up and it is K2CO3(solid pH up sounds like NaOH, already have some - a little dab will do ). Could I perhaps use KOH or CaOH2? I would prefer the calcium hydroxide as it is food grade.

I've taken chem classes, so I can easily play with pH once I get indicator solution. I will totally pick that up from my local hydro store. Now that I tink of it, potassium carbonate I used to up pH for wine/beer making. I think I'll buy some when I go to my hydro store. They have wine making supplies, including pH adjustment.

Thank you so much. I would offer you a beer or a doob or something if you were here.

How am I confused?  I told him to use that cal/mag because his plant is deficient.  I also already told him that epsom salt is a good source of Mg as well.

I thought it was a manganese deficiency, but he suggested magnesium. I don't see the big deal. I'm about as experienced at diagnosing nutrient disorders as I am deep sea diving, which is to say not at all.

By the way, I already mentioned using magnesium sulfate for the deficiency. Karode suggested it over on te shroomery. It helped.

I added it at a rate of 50g/2gal and distributed it across my plants with the majority going to the deficient one.
