What are you guys reading at the moment?
    #605177 - 01/14/12 01:38 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Well school just started for me here, so along the great number of anthropology texts I'll have to read during semester, I like reading some books for myself...

I just finished Charles Baudelaire's "Les paradis artifitiels" (Artificial Paradises) a book on opium, hashish (dawamesk) & wine, written in the 1800's, really an incredible book, that guy was writing in a really beautiful, poetic, imaginary way. I seriously recommend it to everyone.

Also read the life of Bob Marley in comics (like a comic book?), took me 2 days to read it, that book is full of details quite unkown about Bob, it also explain the political/economical/etc. situation of Jamaica during his lifetime... How his manager robbed them for years (and got his face beaten by Mr. Marley & his friends), all his other girlfriends he had along with his wife(or girlfriend, I don't remember if he ever married her). etc. etc. etc. If you ever manage to find the book, BUY it, quite worth it. There is like 2-3 pages of text, then 3-4 pages comic about the text, each comics are made/drew by a different person, so there are a lot of styles, some are really talented, great drawings!

I just started "Junky" by William S. Burroughs, seems really interesting at the moment!

What about you guys?

I just finished Junky by William S. Burroughs, was really a great book, although I find that the writer lacks of emotions in a way, seems almost like a psychopath... In the book, he has a wife, but only mention her like twice, in the whole book, just saying she helped get an advocate. He write about some horrible things related to opiates, seems to think its no big a deal... For example, he wrote about injecting in a vein of the dick, or in the eye, quite fucked up shit! Anyway, I liked it a lot, learned a lot from that book.

Now starting The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

I'll have to try to find a version of Food of the Gods in french, if it even exists!

Seems really interesting, I wonder if it is similar to the Psychedelics Encylopedia (online)

It exists, but according to amazon it's out of print and the book stores that turn up on google don't seem to have it either, here's more details on the translators, isb, title, etc.

Just found a site claiming there's a copy of the book in a library in Quebec, check it out here.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it.

Right now I am reading quite a few things.

Shroom by Andy Letcher

this is really great book. A really good "psychedelic" read based on logic without all the new agey stuff.

The Bhagadava Gita

This book is really incredible. Came into my life at the perfect time.:aum:

and quite a few other books, Nietzsche- Beyond Good & Evil as well as Human All Too Human.

I just finished The Metamorphosis by Frank Kafka, it was really incredible, it is about a guy who wake up a morning transformed into a huge insect, he lives with his family so it kinda fuck thangs up!

Now I am wondering if I should start reading The Doors of Perception or Alice in Wonderland....

G. I. Gurdjieff was quite the human being.

I got to meet and dance/talk/eat/meditate/drum/exist with the author of this one. This guy is like a prism for the light of truth, refracting it into a spectrum visible to those willing to look.

lol, I was pretty sure of that. I just thought on a basic shallow level of psychological recognition, the "R. R." in his name, so prominently displayed like is popular these days, conjures up Tolkien. And if someone has this sort of created familiarity with something, they are more likely to purchase such an item. Unless they have a negative opinion of Tolkien...

Or it's a coincidence.

You should look up the series and read it.  If you liked Tolkien or Terry Goodkind, or that genre.  Its an HBO series at the moment as well.  Good stuff man.

No, he's actually rather critical of the Tolk and all the cheezy derivatives.

PS the series starts out strong, but the last two books were "meh".  Though the last half of dragon picks back up (should have allowed his editor to cut out the bullshit and publish in one volume, as was the original plan

you familiar with the black company books?  I tend to hate most fantasy (the majority is the equivalent of male romance novels), but they were really good.  And the move away from the general cliches in genre reminded me a lot of GRRM and Guin

I hate Game of Thrones.

But only because Geoffrey is a doucher^2.

I'm reading the Gaunts Ghosts Series ATM.

Ciaphas Cain is next on my list.

I'm thinking about starting to read some of the Drizzt Books I haven't read yet (I stopped after the first Hunters Blade Trilogy Book. Like a Boss!

I'll probably read some of Orson Scott Card's books because I read Ender's Game right before I started Gaunts Ghosts.

I'll have to recommend all of Castaneda's books. The only one I haven't read is Journey to Ixtlan.

Those books taught me so much about perception, what dreams are, what the psychedelic experience has to do with living in this universe and what living in this universe has to do with me.

Don't forget to recapitulate!

Well I just finished reading Carlos Castaneda's Tales of Power, it was really intense, I think it is my second favorite Castaneda book so far, behind The teachings of Don Juan. It really made me think about perception, the way you just look at life, or the many ways you can view thangs, just like you said Nanook.

I am starting On The Road by Jack Kerouac right naow

weird, the first pic disappeared.

it was a picture of the cover art for The Wheel of Time, Book Three: The Dragon Reborn. the other picture is the cover for Book Four: The Shadow Rising.

i was curious if anyone would recognise it, but this place moves so slow.

I just finished reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac, really really an awesome book!
Makes me want to hop in a car and drive straight down to the Land of Fire.

I am about to start another one, The Tarahumaran by Antonin Artaud, it is written by a surrealist poet, just before he gets interned into an asylium. The guy went to Mexico (in 1936) to learn about its history and write a theatre thang from it, but instead deciced to go to a really really isolated region, where he met the Tarahumaras, a nation of natives americans, who often perform peyote circle rituals, a bit like in Castaneda's A Separate Reality. I am pretty sure I will like it to be honest!

The Tibetan Book of the Deads

And also The Yage Letters, by William S. Burroughs & Allan Ginsberg

I can't wait to read both!

I didnt make it that far, although I was getting close. Not sure if I still have the ebook on my computer or not. I dont know, I couldnt stand her writing style. It seemed like it was written by a 15 year old girl. The writing was terrible

Fractal- That is an awesome read!!!

I just finished the first book called "infinity," and working on "invincible," now which are the first 2 books in a Saga called "The Chronicles of Nick," by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It's kind of a vampire, zombie, Ancient God's saga involving a young man who grows up through the series and finds out that he has powers to control the dead and shit. It's just my bathroom/ pool book but it keeps me entertained between the violence, humor, and the romance scenes.

I am also working on "The Republic," by Plato. Which is a fucking aweeeesome read, it is just very deep and complex and takes a lot of time to get through little parts of the book because the concepts are deep.

ive been readig the golden compass

trying to half the compass in my head

I need my old compass again, which only showed one direction, the one I needed to go

these days the compass has not been working too well

I stopped reading when the little girl entered the land of the dead and lost her most precious love in the entire world

I think the book broke my heart or something

:/

I've definately got to get back to the bookstore soon!

In the middle of reading: "The illustrated encyclopedia of natural remedies" by C Norman Shealy.

Will probably either get another plant I.D. book, a chemistry book, or psychedelic philosophy.

I love how the book really challenges you mentally. Like, you read a paragraph and then you have to sit there for a second and let it digest.

I have an awesome .pdf  of "General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry," by Smith. It's just under 1000 pages, but probably one of the best Chemistry resources I have come across.

Was checkin for Mckenna books but they were out.

Anybody else reading like crazy lately?

I've finish The Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell, How Plato and Pythagoras can save your life, and The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life Vol,1.

I'm currently reading a couple books including The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life Vol,2, and The Electric Koolaid Acid Test. Until I can get back to the bookstore.

Anybody have any Philosophy recommendations?

Let's see here.  Looks like I have 4 books going right now.

Fear and Loathing in America; Hunter S. Thompson.  It's a collection of personal correspondences he wrote over the years.  Some good stuff in there.

Game of Thrones: A Dance of Dragons, book 5 in the series.  By George R.R. Martin

Sleep Walk with Me: and Other Painfully True Stories; by Mike Birbiglia

Hocus Pocus; by Kurt Vonnegut.

I have been

Working on book 2 of "Chronicles of Nick," series. Book called Infinity. About 1/2 way done with it and getting "Infamous," for my Bday. The 4th book in the series comes out in March 2013, so I plan to be all caught up by the time it comes out

Looking for another series to get into. I started reading a book by George Lucas and Chris Criten (dude who did x-men) when I was locked up and probably will get into that. Read a lot like Star Wars

Through this year I've read books 1-11 of the Gaunt's Ghosts series (in the form of 3 nicely sized omnibus editions).

This is my current read (book 12)

I'll probably work on the next couple of Gaunt books before I move on to Ciaphas Cain series with these two Omnibus editions of the first 6 books.

It's cool to question it, but the fact is the government can do a lot of things that big business can't do well (like healthcare).

It's a fact, statistically lower overhead is present in public healthcare as opposed to privatized healthcare. I'm pretty sure everyone would agree having a higher % of your insurance payments going towards medical costs (meaning it would cost less) is how you would define good health insurance practices. The government can also do other things better than privatized alternatives.

regardless we are derailing so I'm not going to post in here anymore unless I have another book to post.

I just hate ayn rand and randians.

Well guys, its going to be my birthday pretty soon and my parents keep asking me for gift suggestions, so I am making a list and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a good book, I prefer spiritual or non-fiction stuff, but I'm pretty much open to anything.

And just to revive a bit this thread, atm I am reading the first book of Lord of the Rings, I like it so far, I love how Tolkien really elaborated the whole history of his world, as well as the cultures of the races, and the maps, its all so complete!

I read most of Castaneda's books, they are great but you have to be careful, he's highly criticized, lots of people say he made all that up but it is not sure as he died with this secret. Still, even tho he made it up, his writings are still pretty genius!

Man Nietzsche is an Elitist douche, and this is coming from an Elitist douche. He actually criticizes those that "casually" read, and makes some of his shit purposefully misleading to scorn the casual readers.

Probably going to be my last summer read... :/

Last couple of books I've read since I posted are as follows:

Theres a shitload of sketchy things about Castaneda, you should check out a bit about his life, theres some doccumentaries about him that you should watch.

Its most likely that he never expected his book to be so popular, I mean it became basically one of the main new-age book. He got stuck in that circle I think and didn't want to be known as a liar so he just kept going, I mean just from his first book, theres some huge parts there was just taken word for word from a thesis that can be found at the university he went to. Thats just an example, but theres much more that does not necessarely proves he made it all up, but it points towards that, he is an HIGHLY criticized author, just for example, his books aren't considered as ethnographies, but as spirituality/fiction, my teachers at university won't even allow them in bibliographies n shit.

I'm not opposed to that. Got a specific documentary in mind?

I always hated bibliographies, damn things took longer to finish than the essay they were for.

Well, I look it at like he purposefully is conceited in order to cause his readers, especially the ones who just just through books, and the one's who hang on every word or worship the writer's ideologies. It's a challenge to every reader in order to get him or her to not only question the author but to question themselves within the archateche of his philosophy as a whole. In short, the man wanted people to take his writing seriously, and if not, you could either fuck off or experience a fresh, or as Nietzsche would put it, a greater way to see how the human mind progressed or regressed from the time we first thought of ourselves as I.

Right now I'm reading:

...and my God how good it is! It's definitely a very well researched and joyously written for the joyous reader

Yea it's just more "work" to read it because after a page or five I have to sit back and absorb what was actually said. It's not like reading Pedagogy theory where it's more about just absorbing the message, and for a future educator like myself seeing how that fits into my philosophy of education.

Does that book cover much on the two books that are in that translation?

Below is the edit

-Also maybe I should have actually taken a "real" philosophy class instead of "Philosophy of Science" this semester. Then maybe I could learn more about him. Then again I just wanted third semester in a row of all science/math.-

Philosophy of science is essential in my opinion. I don't think science degrees should be given to students who do not take at least one class.

I agree with you, but the books are also much different from the movies, I mean so far there's a shitload of chapters they ignored in the movies even tho the really important parts weren't. I love Tolkien's writings, really complete, he didn't only create a world, but also the whole history of that world, as well as some cultural differences among the races and the towns (I'm referring to the introduction about hobbits)

Believe it or not I have never seen a single Lord of the Rings movie or read any of the books. Am I missing out?

One time when I was a little kid I was stage crew in a play of The Hobbit

If you're into fantasy and shit at all, I'd say yes. If you enjoy reading they're a great read. I like wizards and stuff so its pretty perfect for me.

Definitely start with the Hobbit if you wanna pick one. Its the most light hearted and is almost a comedy sometimes. It doesn't have heaps and heaps of names of places you'll never remember or be able to pronounce like the Trilogy does.

Well heres the book I just started and another one I just bought.

Written by Mircea Eliade, the book is Blacksmiths and Alchemists

The other one is by A. M. Hocart, the name is Le Mythe Sorcier (the sorcerer myth, about the origins of witchcraft in several cultures from all around the world)

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. It's my go-to book when I want to read but don't feel like starting something new. I've read it at least 5 times and the movie really doesn't do it justice.

That's a pretty cool book, I never got around to watching the movie. I was fairly young when I read it too, should probably give it another go.

It's definitely worth it. I recommend watching the movie after you read it and comparing the two. It's a great movie but IMO doesn't hold a candle to the book.

I didn't realize the obviousness of what I was saying. Nonetheless, it's a good movie and a great book. Sometimes a movie can be better than the original. For example, I prefer the movie version of The Mist; Neither are particularly good though.

But with One Flew Over A Cuckoo's Nest, the movie was so far away from the book, they basically made the indian chief a secondary character when he's the one telling the story, we get to read his thoughts and we get to see actually why he's in an asylium, the book is so much better than the movie!

Yes, the entire machinery feel to the story is lost and Nurse Ratched becomes the bad guy instead of "The Combine". You lose a lot in the first 10 minutes of the film.

Nurse Ratched's tits were too small for the character in the movie, but she got the coldness down pretty well. Amazingly beautiful book, always my first to recommend.

Sup, I'm resurrecting this thread.

At the moment I am reading two books:

Écrits en Huronie (Writings in Huronie) by Jean de Brébeuf : This is a missionary who, in the very very beginning of colonization in Québec, went to live with the wendats in their lands called Huronie (maybe huronia in english dunno), it was a very vast area that went from Québec to Lac Huron in Ontario. This book is basically an ethnography of the very early contacts between wendats (who now lives in Wendake, near Québec city) and westerners.

The second book is Regard sur le Bas-Canada (A look on the lower canada) by Alexis de Tocqueville, a philosopher of the enlightenment. This is an analysis of my nation after we lost the war on the plains of abraham, taking over our Independence, at the time we were mostly the rural area of Canada, producers of food more than industries, or anything else. The book is also a kind of ethnography I guess. de Tocqueville also wrote a book called Democracy in America, which is about the political and social structures of USA in its beginning, pretty good read I recommend it.

I remember way back in the day Burroughs did something with Kurt Cobain called "The Priest They Called Him". I have the CD, but honestly still haven't been able to sit thru it, Kurt kinda made it unbearable.lol.
What's his stories about? I honestly don't know a whole lot about him.

Lately I have been reading Alhazarad by Donald Tyson. Basically its about the guy who wrote the Necronomicon. Long Story short.

That reminds me of William S. Burroughs role in Drugstore Cowboy, he was "The priest" who was an old junky. I have never heard of his work with Cobain tho, seems pretty interesting.

Burroughs stories are often about drug abuse induced delirium, or simply drug abuse, but teamed up with Kerouac, it kinda feels like i'm reading On the Road or something similar. I'm still at the beginning of this book tho, but its really what it reminds me. I like how Burroughs write, he studied anthropology (which is my field of study as well) and in my opinion it really leaves marks in the way he writes or in the way he will try to analyze different situations. Except maybe for the Naked Lunch, because I've never been able to read more than a couple chapter.

The book is basically the first writings Burroughs and Kerouac wrote together, they were not known at the time and it took a very very long time for it to get published, it was well after they got known for being beatniks.

Sounds extremely interesting. I have a hard time staying with the stories with stuff like this sometimes.

I started reading Burroughs with the book Junky, then read The Yage Letters, then tried Naked Luch (I had seen the movie, but the book is absolutely nothing like the movie lol), now im reading this, I'm still not sure if I wanna read queer as I have no doubts he took several pages describing nasty shiats...

So far I enjoy most of his stuff, I read junky in 2 days, I really got into the story like crazy! The yage letters is basically a compilation of letters he and Allan Ginsberg wrote while Burroughs was in south america trying to find ayahuasca, he had trouble finding it (would get shitty ass batches or would get robbed by natives because they thought he was working for a petrol company). Great book I highly recommend it!

I've only read On the Road by Jack Kerouac, I am looking forward to find more of his stuff, he's from Québec by the way, he even started writing on the road in french and the doccuments are in a museum I dunno where.

I'm a few pages from finishing it, it reads like kerouac's on the road - really fast!

The Great Shark Hunt was awesome!! you get a taste of everything that made Hunter so great :yesnod: it  was the best of his releases imo.

Have you read the rum diary? That's also very good, I recommend that.

I need that book....

I, under advisement by my organic chemistry professor, ordered 1.5 lbs of caffeinated mints! I went through about .5lb last semester, it's what kept my biochemistry grade up while I studied every class that wasn't biochemistry. I read an article that said being under the influence of caffeine (both before or after) attending a lecture showed significant retention in the material.

I think it was about the caffeine high making it in general a more "memorable" experience.

I agree with you bro. Whether I was high or just on a humongous sugar rush, I did better in my classes. Actually one semester I was high 95% of the time and I worked nights and had to be in class at like 8am.
I slept thru almost every single class that semester, but yet I got straight A's. No cheating or anything, just waking and baking every morning.

Maybe when I slept I could hear the professors talking and it just became ingrained in my brain.

I was prepared for failure and then got knocked on my ass when I seen they spelled "AAAAAAAAAAAAAA" on my report card.lol.

Really inspirational and it ties a lot of the stories I used to hear as a kid from the bible into the Rasta beliefs.

Got another one after I finish this, its called Rastafari: Ideology and Culture.

I haven't read much King, yet. Right now I'm working on a large collection of National Geographic magazines.

I am reading a book by Serge Bouchard (anthropologist from Québec) and Marie-Christine Lévesque called Ils ont couru l'Amérique, it is about 7 or 8 coureurs des bois (runners of the wood?), who were the main actors of the fur trade between the french colony and the natives. Very interesting book.

One of the books I've recommended several times to PO is by Charles Baudelaire, its called Artificial Paradises, it is about hashisch and wine, the hash they had at the time contained opium in it (well the one they were getting from the Arabs installed in France), its very informative and interesting, explains the origins of the term Haschisch, etc. Awesome book

Reading the last Harry Potter book. Tease me if ya gotta, I like the series haha. I forgot how much more clear the books make the plot. The movies really kinda just "oh fuck we gotta wrap this up" end it. The books make all the reasons for everything clear. I knew them anyway, but it's nice to be reminded I guess.

I ordered the first Game of Thrones book. It shipped but no tracking...I hope it's here soon or I'm gonna start in on the Shining again.
