250w MH/HPS AN Aero -- White Widow -- seed to fruit in aeroponics.... HARVEST Sept 25th
    #573249 - 07/19/11 10:16 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

My homebuilt Growtent - since this picture, it now has wheels (yeah, that's right, mobile grow) and is ventilated out a window (it's hot here in Canada lately). 8inch fan with variac for speed control (speedster hummed) and a massive carbon filter that sits on top of everything. It is sealed at the top so it pulls cool air from the bottom, around the bins and plants, past the lights, where it is sucked into the carbon filter and blown out.

~July 3rd 12 hour RO water soak, then to paper towels for a couple days
-when they all sprouted, I put them in some rockwool I cut down to size.
-July 7th, under the 250W MH, when they started showing leaves.
-July 9th, when the leaves separated, I added 280PPM of nutes.

July 19th, at 900PPM.

I've been slowly increasing the nutes, from 280 to 900, over the last ten days. Just equal parts Grow - Micro - Bloom + about .5 to 1ml of H202 per day. My res temps vary from about 75 to 85, though it is well aerated by design, so I'm not expecting issues.

My original plan was to veg, top for clones, root the clones in the same tub at around 300PPM for a few days before removing them for mothers and fathers (fathers which I would kill and mothers which I would put in soil) and then flowering the topped plants in the aero.

Since that will add probably three weeks at the very least to my grow time , I am now thinking that I will forgo it and start flowering in only a few days (without knowing the sex of my plants yet or cloning them). I want a nice mother for future grows, but maybe I should get through my first one before I think about scrog, sog, mothers and thousands of watts...

Oh also, I plan on using the MH light for two weeks into flower to limit stretch, as I want my plants to stay under 18 inches.

Opinions?

I put a small fan on them a few days ago. Their stems are starting to thicken up.

This isn't exactly my first grow - a couple years ago I vegged a few plants for a while in the same setup, but I had to cut them down before flowering because I didn't have adequate ventilation or a carbon filter.

Here is some photos of the plants I had before in the same setup (same seeds).

About where I am now

Looking good so far! I hope you have better luck with White Widow than I did. I waited 11yrs to smoke white widow, and when I finally got a chance to after harvesting White Widow from Green House. I was highly dissappointed. What bank are your White Widow from?

They came from BCSeedKing a couple years ago when they first got into the business. I'm hadn't heard much at the time about them, but they seemed legit, so I sent a money order, and I got some seeds. We'll see how they turn out.

These are the last of my WW beans, but I've got 10 Juicy Fruit that I haven't tried. I'm liking the look of Cash Crop Ken's Kish though, from VSB, for in the future. Single cola, 6 week flower time.

So, as it looks now, I'm probably going to veg for about a week more and then I'll remove those green onions and flip them to 12/12 probably under a MH for about two weeks, and then an HPS for the remaining six. We'll see how they like that.

For someone looking to maximize a small amount of space, like I was when I built it, I think it's the way to go. Aeroponics is definitely the fastest method, but it's also not that hard to fuck up, and if you're going straight aero (like I am) without the roots dipping in the water at all, it grows faster, but a pump dying or some nozzles getting clogged could cause major crop losses in only a few hours.

I wouldn't use Aero for large crops, due to cost and the amount of upkeep required. For cloners and small grows though, it's the shit. Plants react so quickly and grow so fast.

Anyway... so I had some issues in the last couple days. None too serious, but it probably slowed my growth.

Noticed some deficiency on one of the plants a couple days ago. Kind of ignored it, but then it spread to another plant in various places.  Treated for a magnesium deficiency yesterday, today things were a bit better, but I realized that I was just ignoring the underlying problem - I didn't have a way to do res changes. So today I changed the res and installed a tap to make future changes easy. I'll probably aim to do them once a week once I get flowering.

The second fuck up was that yesterday I moved the small fan to blow on the two smaller plants and it happened to fall on the smallest plant - twice. That's why it looks shorter now in pictures - it got bent over quite significantly. It doesn't seem to care though.

Anyway... I'm probably still on target, about four days away from flowering, and with the fuckups hopefully out of the way, the plants should start showing their speed by morning.

*Not pictured, but I moved the tallest one to where the shortest one had been, to even it out a bit and get the small one some more wind.

PH 5.6
PPM 975
Res temp 70-75
Flower temp 80-90

Took these an hour ago, 9 hours after I took the last picture. Note that the front two plants were switched last night.

This is the stem of the tallest, at 6 inches.

I found an old air pump and bought a stone, so I've decided to take clones and root them in DWC. I expect to take one or two clones each in about 3 to 4 days and then I'll flip it to 12/12 probably 3 to 5 days after that, depending on how they respond.

I'm not sure yet what I plan to do with the mothers, but I have a couple weeks to get that set up.

Root rot appearing on two maybe three plants. Not the largest. Color change on some of the roots and they clump together

Two airstones went in the res, along with some H202. Res temp 76.

I should have better anticipated this. I'll monitor it over the next couple days, but they might be fucked. In that case I'll clone and chop.

I may clone as early as tomorrow morning if things don't improve. I'm hoping they will though. Not going to do DWC clones anymore, since the airstones are now in the res, so any clones will probably go in some Jiffy pellets. If I end up cloning and chopping, the clones will go right back into the main tub after I clean it out with  H202.

I turned up the exhaust fan, added 3ml 35% h202 yesterday and again today, and those airstones are doing well in the res.

I spotted significant growth on plants that may have been stalled and the bottom leaves that were wilting a bit on three of the plants has disappeared.

So, it may work out fine. And I was looking at the pictures I had posted before - it appears that I'm right on schedule.

Since I've decided to clone into jiffy pellets, I'm going to hold off on the cloning for a few more days (4-5) so I can have at least 3-4off each plant and still leave lots.

I love how fast aero responds.

Correction, at the time of the last post, the tallest was 7 inches.

The tallest is now 11 inches. I have a max growth height of 20-22 inches.
They're still at 900-925 PPM and they certainly don't want it any higher. At 940 to 1000PPM, tips curl and start to yellow. I've read before that that is typical for White Widows though.

...fuck, it's 4am and I'm tired as fuck, but I want to get this growlog update done. These pictures were taken ~5 hours ago.

I don't know what sex they are yet. I am seeing early pre-flowers, but nothing definitive yet. I haven't sexed a plant before. I'll figure it out though or post macro shots in a few days.

Anyway, I was thinking about my options in regards to the clones - none of the options good. All either cost money or risked the clones. Sooooo........ I invested and built an aerocloner.

Had to buy a bunch of shit too. A $60 drill, some bits, a hand saw (should have got a hack saw), and a hole cutter. In addition to the aerocloner parts and $100 of lights.

Anyway, it has a 26 clone capacity and I've got four 2ft T5s to go over top, a total of 96 watts. I don't have a box for it though. I think I need to get a cabinet that I can put all my shit in. That way I can filter the intake air too, which I can't do now. The carpet is not clean. Should hit some garage sales.

Probably going to clone tomorrow. Will probably just take a couple from each plant, then flower switch to 12/12 within 2/3 days. Definitely going to keep the MH bulb in until the plants stop stretching after I flip them to 12/12. I've never cloned before so I'm anxious about it.

Also, I picked up a liter of Sensizym and added 2ml/L to my res - it's currently busy eating dead roots from the aforementioned root rot that I already took care of.

THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT

lawl...:nyan:

Tallest is 17 inches now, and has reached up and burned itself on the bulb twice. The rest are a few behind. Had to do some turning and shit today because the 1's fan leaves were completely covering 2. All is good though, except my issue with maximum height of course, but I'll try to move stuff around enough after I kill the males.

I did the cloning a few days ago, on the 31st. No roots yet but they look healthy so they'll probably pop soon. Has only been two days. I trimmed up some of the unhealthy bottom leaves to get some air flow. So far it looks pretty good. I started flowering the flowering cycle right after I took the cuttings.

ANYWAY, I've got a sortation system.

1 - Front left(tallest) - FEMALE
2 - Front right - hasn't shown
3 - back right - Male - will chop in a day or two.
4 - back left - hasn't shown

I'm stoked that #1 is a girl. I'm also stoked that I cloned her.

so right now I'm just running grow - micro - bloom and bud candy, with some sensizym, which really did wonders for my roots.

I'm probably going to end up making some DWC buckets for the mothers in the coming couple weeks, just because aero would be completely unnecessary, and because soil sucks balls.

Here's my aerocloner BTW. It has 96w of 6500k flouros over it, but I'm only using 48w at the moment since they don't need it. They're on 18/6 with the pump running 24/7. Their leaves haven't drooped, even though they don't have roots yet. This picture was taken when I first put them in, though they look the same now.

Some of those clones are extremely small, but I only need one good one for a mother, the rest are backups, so I didn't want to take any more from the plant than I had to. I took all bottom shoots, nothing that was getting sunlight.

Oh and here's my variac. It works very well. No hum, unlike the Speedster. Can be used on pumps too.

I am looking forward to smoking these plants. :bonghit2:

Well, I'm boned. I've got four more inches I can raise the lights. I should get a fucking 1000 watt and move them into a bigger spot.

I guess I'll start some LST or some shit. ehh...

anyway, I want to get as many of these fuckers out of there as possible. Here's some pics from # 3, who I figure is male.

First time I've sexed a plant though, so I want confirmation.

chopped #3 and did some LST to #1. will probably pull it down further tomorrow.

I'm probably going to chop #2 and #4 as soon as I know their sex and I see some more pistils #1, or maybe earlier in the case of #2, which is not looking impressive.

I froze all the stems and leaves from #3. Gonna make some cannabutter tomorrow and put it on popcorn.  :awebigvaped:

Anyway, I did a res change and switched to second week nutes (grow-micro-bloom-big bud-bud candy). A couple days early because I didn't change the nutes ~3 days or so before flowering, probably ten days ago.

The plants kind of stalled out over the last 24-48 hours, or at least, they didn't grow any taller. Fairly nice canopy up top, so I swapped the bulb to the HPS. Much better light penetration.

Anyway... I'm really looking forward to bud development LOL.

I want six ounces. But I'll be happy with five and I'd settle for four.

Looked male to me.

#3 preflowers
http://i1092.photobucket.com/albums/i418/420HippoSex/log%202/IMG_0269.jpg

I needed the space, so I pulled it. The smaller three were just getting covered by #1.

I pulled #2 last night because it was really tiny and completely covered, and also I spotted male preflowers (same as pictured) yesterday.

#4 looks female but I'm not completely sure yet. I may pull it even if it is female, if it can't reach above the canopy, but I'll keep the clones in that case.

Tonight I will flush again and begin the 4th week's nutes.

All is going good, other than the lack of space and some burning that caused. They're done vertical growth though I hope, so I'll just have to try to tame the buds as they develop.

These pics were taken yesterday.

As for my clones, I was worried for a while that they might be fucked, because I had the pumps on 24/7 for the first ten days without even a fan. The stems were rotting. I put a fan on it and it helped, but once I put the pump on a timer (30/30), the roots popped and everything is good.

I am not using H202 or sensizym at this point because my temps are under control and there isn't any rot. I have found the combination very effective though when there are issues to take care of.

I put down the money (before I ran out) for a Purple Days vaporizer made from Fiddleback maple with a bison skin base.

I don't expect it for a couple months, but I'm looking forward to it! I picked it over the extreme Q because it is stealthy and will potentially last forever, so it can follow me on my journeys...

Plants 1 and 4 were female BTW. I moved four and they've both been bent up with LST. The clones are running in water with about 150PPM of nutes. I will probably future clones and mothers water with a PPM under 300.

Next time will be much easier since I'll have clones to start with. I am not sure what I will run next - same growbox, new growbox, or 1000w. It's going to get cold in the winter though and I don't think I will be able to continue venting outside, so I will need to redesign it. I had it vent just into the same room and the humidity went up like crazy over a day.

I really like this aero setup though. In the future, I will stay with aero.

I raised the roof four and a half inches. Would have done more but then I'd have to buy wood. I'm hoping it'll be enough. Shit is difficult because I've got probably forty pounds of carbon filter on top of everything.

Paranoid as fuck. Shit stunk up the room good for a few minutes while I had it apart with the exhaust off. I don't want to risk it again in the future, especially as it gets further into flower. (in the 4th week now)

I live in a shitty wood apartment building - shared hallway and shit - at least one cop living somewhere here. I can hear music from the floor above and below me. It's like I'm a Jew living in Nazi Germany - too afraid to talk in their own apartments for fear of being overheard by snitching neighbors.

I use blankets, rubber, door sweeps, and such to keep the sound and vibrations to a minimum. You can barely hear the fan with your ear to the door, but the person under me may hear vibrations in the night. Have done all I can to prevent it, but I can't be sure.

Morning after the lift, I see a notice on the outer door of the building that says there's going to be a fire detector test at the end of the week and a "maintenance inspection". :tinfoil: I'll be around then though so I don't anticipate any issues...

I ended up killing my smallest clone in a fit of paranoia, so I'm down to 5 plants total - in an attempt to skate under the new mandatory minimum sentencing. I'm too pretty to go to jail. :ass2mouth:

This grow is medical, not commercial, but I have not made an attempt to make it legal because I don't have a specialist to give me what I need, I would need the landowner's agreement to grow here, and because Harper (through HC) recently punted the future of Canada's medical program in the balls.

Inspection and smoke detector test took all of 10 seconds.

Gotta love it when the manager doesn't own the apartments and thus does not give a shit about them.

As for my grow... I think next time I'm going to try adding bud blood to my lineup. It probably would have helped reduce stretch and pack on some more weight. My buds aren't as developed as I think they could be at this point.

Live and learn!

bud blood is an amazing product. I have done/seen massive pulls done using it that finished 1-2 weeks quicker then normal. i grow organic-soil now but if i ever switch back to hydro thats one product i would not go with out.

I got some bud blood for next time. Tiny ass bag for $25, but it'll do four cycles in the tubs I've got, so I'm satisfied.

Anyway, when I got home I smoked through my entire stash and didn't want to go out and buy a bag, so I harvested them early.

Haha, yeah, just kidding. Was poking fun at Pernicious still for harvesting his a couple weeks early.

Anyway... some fucking fantastic news now.

If anyone remembers, a few days ago I had a post (that got deleted) asking for an online pharmacy that could hook me up with some birth control. :derfase:

Anyway... long story short, went into a clinic today and got six months of birth control, no questions asked, a refill on my Adderall script, AND the doctor is going to make sure that he gets me legalized ASAP!  :flowerchild:

:gethigh: :cop:  :flyhigh:

I just asked for a referral to a specialist, he asked why, I said alternative treatment - specifically marijuana :froman: , and he says "Why can't I sign it for you?" Anyway, so he's going to fast track me to a specialist (~3 months) to re-diagnose me (w/ ADHD) and then this walk-in clinic doctor is going to sign my papers! Said he already did it twice this way.

Anyway, I'm fucking stoked to say the least. :dancingbacon:  :discorex:  :prance: :happyweed:

When I do a res change, I add enough nutes to take it up to around 1200ppm, and then after that I just add RO water. By the end of the week it's at about 800.

The reason I'm doing this is threefold:

a) Over 1200 and these widows start burning tips.
b) it saves nutes / I'm lazy and experimenting
c) I'm going more concerned with quality than quantity this round.

On sunday I will go to the next week's nutes, which will be week 6 and will include Overdrive (which I haven't used yet). 8th week will be just a Final Phase rinse and then RO water.

Just got a knock on the door a few minutes ago. I very rarely get people knocking on my door.

I go look through the peephole, and sure enough, it's a :cop:.

Anyway, quickly hid my hash and bubbler before answering the door, and was relieved to find out that he wasn't looking for me, nor did he know my name.

Got me worried for a minute though.

I haven't decided whether or not I'm going to do another run in Oct/Nov yet after this. These girls are due to come down in 19 days.

I need to get me a house.

Yeah, they're really looking nice and some of the top buds are already starting to look like an eighth.

I definitely feel that these beans were legit white widow. They burn over 1200PPM and they look exactly how they should. Beans from BCSeedKing.

I burned the tips a bit. I was just watering with RO but the PPM was like 700 and going to go down if I continued so I added more nutes up to 1200ppm. Mistake, the next day it was 1340, the next day 1440. Hopefully it won't affect the buds. It doesn't appear to have, but all the tips of the leaves, including most on the buds, are burned. Shitty, but at least the buds look good and I learned for next time.

Anyway... what else happened...:bonghit: ah.... Well, I've got two phenotypes. One sativa dominant and one indica dominant. The sativa dominant one isn't quite as filled out and definitely could have used an extra week or so of bloom nutes, and the indica one that is probably about done.

Overall, by the way the buds are looking and due to the fact that some have to now be propped up because of their weight, I'm thinking that this grow was pretty successful already. However, what I had wanted to grow was buds with quality that meets or exceeds dispensery and BC bud quality. Visually, I think they could be a bit more powder coated to look like magazine buds. It's looking like "some of" the best smoke I've ever had, but I was hoping that it would end up being "the best" I've ever smoked. I won't know for sure until it's cut and dried, but I've noted places where there is room for me to improve future harvests. (which will not be until at least spring time. I am hoping to keep a couple clones in soil though for mothers.)

In the pics, the indica one is the one with the orange hairs (at back and on right), the sativa is the one with the white hairs (usually at front and on left). The leaves on the sativa are yellowing fast since I started them on RO. Probably because they still wanted to grow some more. Some of their second level buds are showing orange hairs though.

According to schedule, I should be taking them down tomorrow. They've been on RO after a 6h Final Flush rince for about 6 days now.

What do you guys think? Chop 'em down or let them sit?

I've only got 30x magnification and I guess the trichomes look cloudy, but I can't see any ripe trichomes, so maybe I just can't see shit.

Also, something to note is that I am not PHing my RO water during flush. It was between 5.6 and 6.2, now down to 5.1 yesterday and down to 5 today but I've decided not to touch it because what I'm hoping is that it doesn't matter since there is no nutrient uptake to inhibit.

I'm considering chopping the indica first, but since there's no nutes in the water I don't really think it'll be worth the hassle to leave the sativa in there a while longer to ripen.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about drying either... has anyone ever dried their plants with the roots attached? pretty natural way to go about it, so it should be fine... right?
I'm thinking that I might just drain the res, turn off the pump, and let the girls dry out right where they're standing.
The reason for considering this is because if I stick them in there, I can just continue to vent the box and within a few days they'd be dry enough to cut up and jar up for curing and I won't have to worry about the whole damn room reeking of reefer. There's a reverse pressure in the room keeping smell from leaking into other apartments, but this amount of bud, once I take it out of the grow-box, is going to reek. Opinions?

Unless anyone suggests otherwise in the next ten hours, I'm going to leave the lights off for their last 24 hours of RO water and then I'm going to drain the res and reduce the voltage on my variator (which controls the speed of my 8inch inline fan) down to no lower than about 55V (250W at 50V = 5A). Not sure of this fan's wattage, but the internets tell me 8inch inline fans are around 200-220W.

I've never taken the fan below about 80V I think, so I'm not sure if it will still spin at 55V, but it should and I do need to reduce the speed or these plants will be dry in only a few days, which will leave me with less than ideal smoke.

We'll see what happens. All of this is a learning experience for me.

Unrelated:
I got news a few days ago that my Purple Days vaporizer is in the mail already, so that might arrive right around the time these buds are ready for testing. I'm excited about that. In page two I posted a pic from their website of the one I got - made with Fiddleback maple wood.

Also, Humboldt Hemp Wicks. I used to use Beeline, and I tried a couple other brands, but none of them had as much bees wax as I thought they should. The Humboldt Hemp Wicks are nearly pure white due to the amount of Bees wax (the clean burning fuel) and their organic hemp line is so soft and pure it almost looks and feels like cotton, so there is a much cleaner burn. Highly recommended. I got 200FT of it off ETSY for about $23 shipped.

It's thinner than most hemp wicks, but that is a good thing. It's not the thickness than you need, it's the amount of fuel (bees wax). You want the highest ratio of clean burning fuel to plant matter and that's what Humboldt Hemp Wick provides.

This bud unfortunately did not develop as well as the others on the indica plant. It was right beside the light, so it had great potential, but I figure it was too warm and as a result didn't fill out as well.

I'm getting excited. Can't wait to smoke these trees.

edit:

Score! picked up 11 500ML wide mouth jars for $5. That'll hold the harvest.

BTW, I cut off their water supply about four hours ago. The variator is at 50V and the fan is absolutely silent. Still sucking a lot of air out though so I don't expect it to long to dry out. Most of the roots were never in the res, but the ones that were I cut off, so there's no water for the roots and they should dry out in a quick hurry I hope.

There was some shit in the water and the roots were looking skummy again... I guess I should have been using H202 (skipped it for flush). Ehh... anyway, the buds really sparkle, so that's gonna be nice.
