ok. what would be the best way to get rid of them? i dont exactly want to spray my buds with soapy water etc seeing as though im so close to harvest, i was thinking of just doing it the safe but hard way and picking them out once i harvest. would be a bitch of a task though lol.

Well just PM me the info and Ill certainly read up. I don't want to continue this in his thread.

Because from what I read man, change in trichomes DO affect the overall pistil appearance.

I value what I read in books and valid internet articles before what others tell me.

Well then you better buy another book cause trichomes have nothing to do with why the hairs change colors.

What book has this nonsense in it?

As the pistils grow out from the calyx they form resin glands (trichomes), which gradually change in color before they shrink and wither. This withering of the trichomes affects the look of the pistils, which in turn fade and tend to look burn and dry.

At most the trichomes will change the color only slightly because there color has changed and they are on the hairs. Time is the biggest factor in the color change of the hairs and the trichomes. Anybody can figure out that trichomes don't change hair color after growing just one crop with a few different strains in it.

Examples: All clear trichomes on plants with red hairs.
The picture of the book cover by Ed Rosenthal that I put up down below you can see that the hairs are turning red but what color are the trichomes still?

Now further down it says all the trichomes can take up to 2 weeks for all the trichomes on the plant to change color. Anybody who has grown a plant knows for a fact that this is not true. The first trichomes appear within the first weeks of buds forming and don't change color for 4 to 6 (or longer on certain strains esp Sativa's) weeks cause if they matured in two weeks like he claims then buds would be considered mature at 2 to 4 weeks old.

Then the book is written by a guy named Greg Green. He gets his information from other peoples books and old science studies many of them from the 70's and earlier. He is also very well known for being the guy who use to ask a ton of questions at Overgrow then came out with a book.

I don't claim to be any kind of a expert or any better of a grower then anybody else but I have picked up a few thing along the way considering this is my 25th year under the lights. :flyhigh:

The best grow book out right now is

and here is the site for the book when things need to be updated or if you actually want to ask the author a question.

Thanks for clearing it up  I know there are some books I have read that are probably outdated. Its better then the book I read saying that dipping your seeds in estrogen pill solution will increase chances of females

I have seen amber trichomes on pistils though under a magnifying glass. I now know its not the main reason they turn amber.

But the real thing was the statement that I was trying to clear up;

fuck this gnat problem is pretty bad. i hear that this far into flowering getting rid of them can be hard. ive done quite a bit of research but i cant find out how to get rid of them during flowering. the buds are so sticky, and all the little motherfuckers are just getting stuck to them.

how do i get rid of them?

Fungus Gnats? Little fruit fly looking things?

If its a container plant you can use Beneficial Nematodes. Make sure you keep it damp. I don't know if mosquito dunks will influence your final products taste (I haven't heard of it), but that is another option. Just crush it up over your plants base and it will work. You can also use neem oil as a soil additive. Do not apply it as a foliar spray since you are so far in flowering. Neem oil can be used as a soil additive up until flush, I don't know dilution rates but you can find them somewhere.

I would honestly brave it out for the next 1-2 weeks.

Its not the flies that you have to worry about they don't do much damage to the plant, its their larvae they lay that eat your roots.

I have smoked some bud that probably had some spider mites  Still got me super ripped and tasted the same.

im not real concerned about the larvae atm seeing as though ive only got about a week to go. my only concern is my buds being covered with gnats.

anyway, i covered the top of my pot with foil, i heard that this will prevent them from turning into adults and also eventually kill the larvae. i also put a few dishes of balsamic vinegar around my plants. i heard the adults are attracted to it. as for my buds being covered in them, i clipped off a little nug just before, and they seem really easy to just pick off with tweezers. so i dont think its going to be too big of a problem.

just going to be a pain in the arse picking them off thats all lol.

I take it you've never had to trim more than a couple oz's at a time? I had a guy I'd get mine from that hardly ever trimmed anything. I'd sit there for hours, me and my girl, trimming already dried and cured buds... Man, I won't say I don't like it, but it is definitely boring after the first couple hours!
