Craftsman Appreciation Contest!!! Win a Big Eye Afzelia Burl Dugout now thru 12-19-10!!!
    #499612 - 11/20/10 09:02 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Ok how bout this one for a giveaway/contest kinda thing, had a great suggestion from a member and wanna go with it, I am gonna have a "Craftsman Appreciation Contest/Giveaway" that will start today and end on Dec. 19th so the winner will receive their own Big Eye Afzelia Burl Dugout worth $75 as a great Christmas Gift. Afzelia Burl with big bright eyes like in these pieces are becoming increasingly harder and harder to find. This piece would be one of the most rarest I have made and will be an awesome win for any contestant here.

I want anyone that wants to enter this contest to make their very own wooden smoking piece and would like them to take pictures at different stages of the creation process and submit them so that we may all see the transformation, and really get into what it takes to make a wooden pipe. The contest will begin today the 11-20-10 and continue for bout a month. The winner will be announced on 12-19-10 and shipped on 12-20-10 just in time for Christmas.

I know it will be fun and do look forward to everyone entries, I wish you all luck and look forward to it!

Hmmm I don't know how many submissions you will actually get, but since I have access to wood and have some woodworking tools, I wouldn't mind trying.

My first ever pipe was hand crafted by me, and my buds on the hockey team nicknamed her "the widdler"

I'm bored today.
Would it be acceptable to use deer antlers instead of wood?
I think I'll make a one hitter, a steam roller bowl, and a plain ol bowl as well.

Ed,

I have some sweet cocobolo in my shop right now.  I would like to make a bowl out of it.  Do you know if it is safe to burn in?  Are the cocobolo pipes on your site treated/protected inside the bowl?

Are there any woods we should avoid due to health concerns?

The only pipes I have ever carved before were 2-piece catlinite prayer pipes.

I have been selling these Coco tokes for a while and have seen other guys making pipes of all kinds, sizes, etc. for years with it. What you want to be concerned with would be the moisture content of any of your wood when used for pipes, you want to wood to be as dry as possible to prevent any of the sap and such to enter your lungs. As far as different woods to use for pipes I guess that would be up to you what flavor you like and do your research on that species and see what you come up with.

I look forward to your work and your submission here, good luck!

I do not think cocobolo should be a problem as long as you seal it. Natura oil is a good non-toxic oil you could use. The real concern with coco is the dust so make sure you use a mask, or you could have an allergic reaction.

    #502090 - 11/30/10 08:25 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Finally got off my ass.  I couldn't let this one slip away without at least trying.

I laid out all my potential wood pieces from the shop.  Cocobolo, burl, oak, etc...

I took a good look at that grain of the cocobolo and knew I wanted to do something with it badly.  I love the color too.  Note differences in the grain.  I think the white is sap wood and the darker is older.

But since I haven't done much with wood recently I thought I should take the 3/4" x 6" blunt of burl and make a simple bowl out of it.  started by clamping it down and grabbing a 1/2" drill bit.

I put the 1/2" bowl hole in and then used an extra long 3/16" drill bit to drill the stem part.  I am partial to a 3/16".  I think it gives a good draw.

Then I did some sanding and shaping.  I would really have liked to have started with 1" sq stock, but this worked anyway.  I am concerned about how long the sides will hold up in the long run.

I was pretty happy with the end result after using 220 and then 500 grit paper to smooth it out. Sealed with pure beeswax.  I like to apply a liberal coat of beeswax and then heat in the oven.  Once the piece is pretty hot it will let me work the wax easily and remove all excess.

And then on to the cocobolo for my main project...

I started by sketching the bowl area out.  This is going to be a "sun" piece, so I am starting round.

Then I sketched in the stem.

Pieces were rough cut.  Note that I started another piece here.  I had another idea, but it went bust.

After roughing out pieces I always like to drill the necessary holes.  I do not have a drill press, I do everything with a pretty crude lineup of power tools.  This is why I start with the holes.

I scrapped that piece for now and then took a deep breath for the almost 11" x 3/16" hole in the sun pipe.  SUCCESS!

I did some more smoothing and roughing out.  This is far from finished, but I am tired and will need to complete later this week.

12/19.... pipe completion...

Next up was to remove some stock to get the feel and shape I had intended.  Various files, plans, and microplanes were used.

I really wanted the stem to be slightly thinner than the tickest part of the bowl.  Also, I wanted to radiating edges of the bowl to get slightly thinner on the way out.  This was both for touch-comfort and reduction of overall weight.  I like a long stemmed pipe, but not necessarily something that feels like a small club.

Then it was time to get out some of my detailing chisels to carve out the sun that I had envisioned for the bowl area.

I only ended up using the chisel on the left.  I like its combination of penetrating depth and narrow width.

After looking real close, I decided that the carved sun rays were not as pronounced as I wanted them.  I decided to highlight the rays with a woodburner.  Unfortunately, I couldn't find it.  Instead I employed the soldering irons I use for my stained glass projects.

Rays were darkened.  Piece was sanded with 60, 80, and 120 grit sandpaper.  I would have used finer sandpaper but I felt it was unnecessary, plus I think I have a couple places I might eventually go back and rework.  I used 200+ sandpapers on items that I want to be really smooth and to show off fine wood details.

I am a huge fan of using beeswax to seal most wood projects.  The beeswax comes from a neighbor and is pure and sweet smelling.  It is cheap too.  I melt beeswax in old pie pans, then I use a rag to liberally apply it.

After applying the beeswax I take the piece and place it in an oven until it is about 150-200f.  That gets the wood to start soaking it in and the beeswax super easy to buff.  This is how the "sun pipe" turned out.

I think I may go back and rework some places on the stem, but I might just let it go as is.  I like how it handles and draws.  I am glad I had some motivation to get out an do this.

Damn.  I think you should try anyway.  My favorite pipe ever was a walnut bowl a friend made for me when I was 15.  He did it in 20 minutes in wood shop class.  It was simple, but sooo nice.  I am thinking about getting one of Ed's walnut pieces.

I'm going to take that as a compliment and say thank you 81renaissance.

  • Sketch out what you want first.
  • Only rough out your piece before you drill your holes.  If you slip up then you haven't invested too much time and can start over.
  • You can get different kinds of wood at some Lowes stores.  Rockler stores are much better if you can find them.  A nice pattern in the wood can help hide mistakes.
  • Take your time to polish with fine sandpaper and use something like beeswax to make the piece shine.

Basic tools?  I've got a drill, I assume I'll need some long-ish bits...
What else would be handy...bare minimum.

  • Sandpaper for smoothing - 60, 120, and 220 grit.
  • Something to shape the pipe to what you want to hold in your hand.  You can carve with a knife, chisel, or use wood rasps/planes.
  • You want a bowl hole to be at least 3/8" or you won't be able to get a finger in it.  You want the stem hole to be 1-8" to 1/4".  I prefer 3/16".
  • Don't forget you can get creative with the wood.  Something in your backyard or neighbor's wood pile might be solid enough to work.  I would stay away from pine.  I hate the taste of pine pipes.

Maybe you should draw up what you want and then start thinking through the steps needed totake it from raw wood to final product.  You might find you need more or less than what I have listed.

I made that one up about 30 minutes ago.  It is just an osage orange branch.  It is basically just cut and drilled.  Now I need to go find out if it is ok to smoke in.  Osage orange is some powerful stuff with exceptional properties.

Wow Crayola, you have done very well, I really like your piece you made, you wanna come go to work for me??? Nice submission, I thank you for your participation.

81Ren. dont be discouraged bro, make your piece! Crayola has given you quite a bit a great info, he has laid it out for you really well, I have been doing it so long it second nature for me, I will say that Crayola is very right. sometimes the best pieces of wood are just laying around somewhere, you have seen em, you just arent looking for em. Once of the most figured dugouts I ever made came from a weird looking twisty stump root formation the dozer pushed up out the ground on my farm, I cut it apart with the chainsaw, ripped it to blanks and worked it out. You'd be surprised what you can make from something that looks like hell.

Just like people, the true beauty that really stands out is on the inside, most of the time others never see it!

Good luck to you!

Good work Mr. Mushroom, I am very happy to see your creation. You did very well, I think thats red cedar you used for that pipe right? You could use beeswax to seal it thats for sure and easy to get, you can use it as much as you up until then, your only sealing the outside, so the inside will be just like you made it, that piece will get better the more you use it and get the insides coated with resin, that is probably the best sealer for the inside.

You did good and thank you for your submission!

I had wondered who I was gonna get to make the decision on the winner and am gonna get Mrs. Ed to be the judge, she is very impartial and doesnt mind telling me I am wrong most of the time, she sees things that I dont and has a an eye for great stuff, so its in her hands from here on out!

Good luck!

I like that you made the bowl area large.  I have always felt clumsy with small pipes and appreciated something to hang on to.  Plus, it keep your fingers clear of the flame.

Ed,

If possible, please hold competition open until the evening.  I have had the flu for the last 5-6 days and have not been able to work in my garage.  I know you did not specify a time, but I am just getting past the dehydration after-effects of the flu and won't make it out there until Sunday mid-morning.  I would really like a chance to finish my pictorial on making the "sun pipe".

No hard feelings if you plan on announcing earlier.  I will still post it so others can view.

Yes, I am being a whiny bitch!

Its no sweat my man, I had already planned on Mrs. Ed being the Judge and she would have to read the post and check the pics, I will get her to after church tomorrow night. She knows what its all about and feels the work as do I. Good luck and I hope you get to feeling better.

Alright Mrs. Ed has made her decision and Crayola is the winner with his burl toke, she digs my burl and likes the wild and crazy grain patterns that burls offer. Get me your shipping info and I will get your piece out Tuesday morning.

I really wanna say thank you to everyone for their participation in the contest and look forward to another great giveaway idea I have for a one of a kind Australian Red Mallee Burl Toke.

That looks really cool.  I wanted to do something with multiple woods, but I only have regular wood glues and epoxys in my garage.  I am concerned about breathing that in.  Did you use anything special to join the wood?

Thanks!

I used regular wood glue.
First of all the area of glue join that will be contacting the stream of smoke or heat is very small (just inside the bowl). Also, with a well clamped lamination (I used 3 C-clamps here) the pressure on the join will easily be in the hundreds of pounds just on that little piece, so the actual amount of glue in the join (given the pieces are flat) is in the microns. Its really nothing to worry about and is negligible at best.

I still would not use epoxy though. If you are still concerned you can try hide glue, I dont use the stuff personally.

I have only made hide glue once.  It worked well in leather on leather and leather on wood applications.  I did not try wood on wood, but it is an idea.  The only drawback I found with it, besides prep time, was that its smelled awful.... really bad.

I am pretty nervous about smoking glue.  God only knows what huffing rubber cement did to me 30 years ago!

Like I said, the glue line is sooooo very tiny and covered with a finish that it is trivial to worry about. Yellow wood glue is not that toxic anyway, drinking a can of diet soda is like a million times worse for you.

Hide glue has been used for ever as a wood glue, it is just as strong as polyvinyl wood glue. Its a pain to use though as you know.

I agree the glue that wasnt squezed out by all the pressure put on it by the C'Clamps would be so minimal that it would not be of any real concern I feel.

The dugout arrived today and it is amazing!

I was going to be happy having a beautiful looking piece for my collection, but this is also an extremely well built dugout.  I really like the fit and function of the slide top.  I can tell it is going to last a long time.  Also, the care kit you included is a great touch.  None of the pipe shops near me offer craftsmanship of this caliper and they never offer care kits for free.

I am extremely happy.  Thank you!

Are the care kits standard with pipe orders?

Wow, thank you for those awesome words on my work, thats what its all about.

Well the extra free goodies aren't quite as elaborate with he pipe as they are with the dugouts. You will get a free pipe cleaner and screen to get you started.

I am gonna copy and paste em at my feedback page. I really hope you enjoy it and thanks again for the feedback.

Get some pics up for all to see!

Hello and good morning, I hope everyone has had a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to the new year as much as I am. Just got really good feelings about it and am excited to see them get here!

Leaving out this afternoon for a week in south Texas for a hellova bird hunt, gonna be out there for dove, duck, and goose! I only take a week off once a year and now is the time. Mrs. Ed and I have had a great time sharing Christmas with the boys, watching their smiles grow from ear to ear as they got closer to the presents under the tree yesterday morning.

I have had a small raffle idea that I put into work for a one of a kind piece at another forum I am at. Its working really well and when I get back from this week off I am gonna do it here as well. I made a couple of one of a kind tokes from the rarest Australian Burls found there. Got an old friend up in Idaho that came across another old timer that has a small stash of burl woods, he bought a few chunks for both of us. Australian burl is very expensive, they manage the burls over there, they monitor its growth, harvest it when it has reached large enough size, measure it all over, record it, and then mark it for sale. The burls there continue to grow on the tree and do not kill it, so it is a renewable natural resource, only the most choice gifts from Mother Nature!

I only wish you all many blessings in this next year and look forward to another great year with you all here!

Thank you,
Ed

Nice haul:thumbup:, Waterfowl was how I got started so I'll always love it, but to me there's nothing like watching my dogs work a field for some roosters. Plus I like the way pheasant tastes more too, but if someone know's how to cook a nice glazed duck then I'm all for it.
