Because they were using a computer to try to find out the answer to the universe. But is symbolizes the way we use science today to figure out the "answers", like physics. Whatever the answer is to life, the universe, and everything in it, it's not going to be so as straight foward. Also, the big brain computer answered that question only to find out she didn't understand the question, which is why she built the 10 billion year old program called "earth" to computer the answer. HAHA
Dude, you won't be dissapoint when you read the whole series. They actually go back to the "42" in like the 4th book i think.

For some reason the number 42 has always been my favorite and I have never known why, it just popped into my head as a child...

That's why the rest of the series is about the search for the ultimate question.
I'd just like to say whoever was responsible for the script of that that horrible fucking Hollywood movie after Douglas died will be the first ones up against the wall when the revelation comes.

The second book in the series(The Restaurant At the End of the Universe) was kinda boring and uneventful so I stopped reading it halfway through. I'll pick it up again reread the first book and commit myself sometime.
If you're looking for the rest of the series I've seen them all over second hand book stores for real cheap.

The second book is brilliant, and the movie was genius.

adams has some part in the script before he died. After he died though is when they started production or something like that i wish the movie was closer to the book because i really liked the actors and everthing. i thought marvin was hilarious. The BBC series though, was good and alot closer to the book, but just didnt like how old it was.

I liked the movie, but just a little bit more than "that was alright", so I have to admit it kind of turned me off getting into the series. Maybe I should dive in.

Yeah, you can tell the point where he died during production of the movie
I read this (and the other stories) prolly 5-6 times in the last 4 years. I love to read, but I rarely find a book that I enjoy. This one was awesome for me.

the movie was just disappointing to me because they tried to cram all 5 books into a single 2 hour show, and that just can't work. I would have loved to see a 5 movie contract for the series though, it had potential to be downright incredible if they gave it the kind of attention it deserved
Absolutely my favorite book series of all time though

I dunno guys I think the movie exposed a lot of us that didn't know about the book. I know I saw the movie long before I expressed any interest in reading the book. But don't panic I still think the movie is cool just not as good as the book. With so many incarnations(the radio show, the tv show, the movie, and the book) I like to think of the movie as a separate entity from the book. Both are good but both are different.

Same here. The movie is what got me interested in reading the books. I try to separate the book and the movie, because if I didn't, I would completely hate the movie.
I was completely amazed by the movies subject matter, and unfamiliar humor. And this was around the time where I first got interested in psychedelics. Fate or deja vu? It really got me interested in british comedy.
Mos def's acting was pretty lame but not off putting. Zoey's is cute like always. And my nigga Sam Rockwell created one of my favorite movie characters EVAR.
AWESOME

I saw her sing god bless america during the seventh inning stretch a few days ago for the Giants Phillies game. I was like Deschanel? Why do I know that name? Is that Bones? Then I figured out it was her sister. Both hot though but its weird that they could almost pass for twins. They even sound the same.
