Jack is a pretty assy whiskey. But there's also something of a trick to drinking whiskey straight. I like to sip just barely enough to moisten your tongue. Otherwise the alcohol flavor overpowers the whiskey flavor.
As far as other whiskeys go I like bourbons. Jim Beam is usually my go to whiskey. Their small batch label Knob Creek is great and a bit higher proof if you feel like spending the money. Rye is good if bourbon isn't dry enough for you. For cheap whiskey I really don't mind Evan Williams. And most Canadian whiskey is really okay (and more on the mild side) it's mostly cheaper because they buy the used barrels that American bourbon makers are not legally allowed to re-use (if they intend to label their product 'straight bourbon') and re-use them for two or three batches. If I'm going to be making mixed drinks with whiskey I use the Evan since you're not really going to taste the character of the whiskey once you put it on ice and water it down and the slightly assier taste cuts through the mix to add that little whiskey bite better than Jim.

Fun fact - whiskey doesn't age in the bottle
I had a really old bottle of Jim Beam I thought was gonna be awesome, but I looked it up and I guess it doesn't age in the bottle.

Yeah, when you see whiskey labled as 'Aged 13 years' or what have you that's in bourbon barrels. Like you said, sitting in a sealed glass container there's no change taking place.

Yep, they age in the barrel after that it's as good as it's going to get...... bottles do gain monetary value with age.
