I believe spirituality and religion are for the mentally weak and ignorant.  Unfortunately that hurts alot of people's feelings, but I can at least say my opinion online (unlike 'real' life where I have to be more politically correct).

Well, when you live and work around people who are religious and/or spiritual then its generally in your best interest not to spit on their beliefs.  But here of course I am free from that constraint.

I agree.  There are exceptions such as people who have been through a lot of fucked up shit and turn to religion when it was that or complete despair.  But yeah organized religion = bullshit

Religion was formed as a way to control people and how they act. The bible is full of contradictions that are to numerous to count. Most people who are religious are the most judgmental and hypocritical people there is. I also believe that most of them just can not accept the fact that when it is over it is over. I like the thought of many but most of all the comedian Bill Maher. He puts it in pretty good perspective. And if you look at what group uses it influence to make laws against what we love they are one of the biggest, and I think this is because they do not want the people to open there thinking and minds because they might see just how stupid it all sounds. This is just IMO, but it is how I believe as well

I hope you're aware that the bible isn't the only book related to religion.

Being religious doesn't necessarily make you Christian, nor does it necessarily make you believe in God.

Many atheists go to a church or religious celebrations because of the practices. I may go to a prayer to see off the dead without actually believing I'm helping send off a spirit to heaven or whatever it is it's supposed to do.

I think there's a fine distinction between a religious person and someone who believes in a supreme being or God. This is why I don't like the word religious as it leaves room for interpretation. I know many people who would say they are religious and if you ask if they believe God created the world they would say no.

Not hating I more or less agree with you IF and ONLY IF the word religious was to be someone who believes in some supernatural phenomena like creationism.

I know a physicist that is a "semi creationist" she believes that God didn't create the universe but believes God created the earth but doesn't believe in Adam and Eve and gives it to evolution. Crazy people.

Yeah you guys sound like you're generalizing into an argument about western religion.  Eastern philosophies are quite different...

I would say the leap from polytheism to monotheism is a big difference.

meh... In the minds of the faithful Im sure it is.  To me, its all shit and it all smells the same.

The importance difference is not whether they are polytheist or monotheist, it is whether they practice violent conversion or oppression as part of their belief.  Thankfully, there are few religious or spiritual people who do that now days.

This sounds exactly like me in the 9th grade.

Things make a bit more sense when you stop trying to nitpick at the minute details and contradictions and realize that everything they're talking about is allegorical whether they know it or not.

Who gives a shit really? If it works for them then so be it. A lot of atheists are just as thickheaded, judgmental, and preachy as any christian. Both are just as confident that they're the ones with the real answer.

Anybody who claims to know the truth or that they're right and anyone else is completely wrong is an idiot either way.

..that being said, Buddhism is pretty fucking tight and it's atheistic.

nice try but your thinly veiled plan to lead us astray and into the arms of the evil captain crunch will not work this time. who would adhere to such a cereal that would destroy the roof of the very mouth it feeds? this is the work of dark and malevolent forces.

honey bunches of oats are the harbinger of peace and nutrition for all. such subtle grace and beauty, such satisfactory blend of oats and bunches... divine.

The Story of Jesus just how original is it. Lets see.......

Krishna was around 1000 years before Jesus...He was a carpenter, born of a virgin, baptized in a river.

The Persian God Mithra 600 years before Jesus......Born Dec 25, performed miracles, resurrected on the third day, known as the lamb, the way, the truth, the light.

Written in 1280 BC the book of the dead describes a god named Horus....He was said to be the son of God (Osiris), born of a virgin, baptized in a river by Anup the baptizer. Like Jesus Horus was tempted while alone in the desert. He healed the sick, the blind, cast out demons and walked on water, and raised Asar from the dead. (The name Asar translates to the name Lazarus the name of the guy Jesus raised from the dead), and he had 12 disciples. Oh yeah did I mention he was put to death on the cross-----1280 years before Jesus.

Hmmmmmm..............

It's sad when we close ourselves off like this, and blame religion for the conversion and the oppression.  Religion is merely a tool in which to carry out these acts, it is rather human nature that leads to what you just described.  Remove religion from history and there would still be conversion and oppression of thought, which is the real root of the problem, not religion.

Tell the average good Christian's those historical facts, and they instantly get their minds blown.

Hardcore Jesus jumpers will tell you that the earth is not old enough for all that shit to happen before Jesus.

What really gets me about Christianity is that Jesus said: "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."  All Americans are rich and live in excess (except homesteaders and homeless people) compared to billions of people.  Any American, even if they are born into what we would consider impoverished conditions still has greater opportunities than the vast majority of people in Africa, South America, or Asia.  Until I see a Christian practicing what they preach, then I will just assume they either don't truly believe the bible or they have fucked up priorities.

Truth man. Some people claim that the USA is a "Christian Nation", while it is actually the exact opposite of what the bible would want.

Zeitgeist has come under a lot of scrutiny for the inaccuracy of some of those facts. The carpenter and Dec. 25 thing especially.

I think Jesus probably was real and that he was an enlightened being just like the Buddha. He probably had nothing to do with a lot of the information attributed to him but when new religions come around it's easier for people to grasp if they borrow from the past you know? The borrowing of people's preexisting beliefs made it easier for them to convert since they're saying its the same thing. Kind of like Greek and Roman gods. Same shit different name. Also, when people convert they tend to retain a lot of their original ideas which get transposed and combined with their new beliefs.

But anyway, what everyone said about him after he was long gone is irrelevant. The majority of what we consider to be Christianity came about long after his time. That's what's neat about Christian Gnosticism. It gets back to the roots and cuts all the bullshit.

Organized religion is another lazy invention of western culture. Save time praying to your god's, with Jesus! (TM)

You know its true. Romans got together at their annual "Oppress The Masses" conference, decided one god is better to capitalize on it with churches.

Power and Money is the real Jesus.

I just believe there is a divine.

That is pretty much as far as it goes.

I'm christian-ish.

But in a very liberal protestant branch.

The problem is you can't cut threw the bullshit if that is all there is to begin with. Any and all religion is nothing but books of fairy tales and made up miracles. Most religion just stems from peoples fear of dying or wanting to control another group of people so they have to come up with happy places when you die and rules to live your life by while alive.

You know those nights when you wake up from sleeping and there were no dreams, no nothing but silence until you wake up. Well imagine not waking up from that, that's being dead.
