They are awesome, but I wouldn't consider them the best. But we all gots different views on music so the eternal argument will rage long after this thread has been closed.

I won't even post what I think the best band is.
Nobody here has the same taste in music as me. Or, I doubt they do anyway.

They might not sound like the best to most people...but I hear them in a way nobody else can. I've been to see their live shows...I can't even count how many times. They were the best band in the world to me. I love the "raw" sound of bands like this, but these guys touched on something special for me.
It was during a time in my life when I was real confused...and the lyrics spoke to me like no others. Still do.
And, I can remember the energy of the shows...you wouldn't believe it. Much more of a rush than any drug has ever given me.

You suck! I thought it was one of the best polls here. It's good to have another tool fan around. They are awesome! I wish they would do another tour. I should be saving up for it. Last tour I had a guy stay with me that went to every show on the tour except the last one in LA. what a summer that was for him i bet.

If you cannot appreciate tool and the music they've created then unfortunately your the only tool in here. They are a phenomenal band and their music has left a fucking crater mark on this planet.
Now whether they're the best? Obviously this something only the individual listener can decide... but to diss tool? That's like dissing Led Zeppelin.... or Metallica.... you simply cannot. They are good. End of discussion.

I can tell you some problems that I have with them. that's mainly in their live shows. Last tour, the same setlist for every fuckin show!? plus their lame ass commercial stance on tapers. I also thought the 2006-2009 shows were pretty lame compared to those of 2002. But then again, no show can compare to the last few dozen shows in 2002. Was the first concert I ever went to. It was simply amazing. It was soo much more than just a couple of big screens on each side of the stage. Here's a picture....

what don't you like hip hop ? check this out. the sound is newjack as all hell, but the lyrics are reminiscent of classic P.E.. Rap music hasn't been this political, subversive, angry, raw, proactive, meaningful, or protest oriented since the early 80's. This man should win an award for this. He's an advocate and a subvert, and that is quite refreshing in contrast to the hip hop mainstream trends of money, record deals, drug deals, and other meaningless content found on today's number 1 hits. Antavio Johnson, you're a true artist

i love TOOL. i wouldn't say they are the greatest either, but they have definitely made my life a bit more bearable at times. i'm actually wearing my TOOL hoodie right now, i need to get a new one as this one has seen too much love in its life and has just about had it, but i love the thing.
i actually think i will put on some TOOL right now to kind of get me up and going for the day. that is, if i can find some on this damn boy's computer. there has to be some.

Tool is amazing, i would say some of the best lyrics, great instrumentals, and great synchronization in a band. But right now Bassnectar is my favorite, probably the best DJ in the world right now, or is going to be. his style is every type of music with dub/breaks/glitch/electronic. sry for the hijack

Idk, he might not be on acid in that video.. He doesn't really move around too much when he's preforming. I think the only thing he moves is his left arm usually
I guess it takes a lot to summon the voice of the gods from such a little guy.
Example:
See he doesn't really move around too much.. But at 3:02 you can hear him fucking break the sound barrier...

Tool just does it for me in every way like no woman ever could.
Man it's like this: you've got the outstanding vocals, thought provoking lyrics, incredible instrumentals on all accounts (especially Danny on drums), they fuck with some excellent beats that nobody else would ever think of, then on top of all this when live they put themselves forward not just as a band but as an entirely artistic demonstration..
and they do a shit load of drugs too.. It doesn't get better than that bro. Bands like Tool and Metallica are a dying breed.

As a matter of fact i have tried his wine. Ive got 12-15 bottles of it. Also I am going to his tasting room in Jerome later this month! Woot!! I havent been to the new place but went to the old tasting room in cornville a few times. Some of the wine is OK. I tried a few of the cheaper 25$ a bottle and a bottle that was 80 or something. The cheap one wasn't to my liking but the higher dollar one (Naga, 06 i think?) was.

I watched a wine tasting online with maynard and some wine guy it was pretty interesting, the wine reviewer was definitely crazy about wine and not tool. It seemed like he bumped up the rating he gave it anyway.
Apparently they care a great deal about the wine though: " We will NOT be shipping over the summer due to potential damage to our wines. We will ship up until the last week of May, unless temperatures increase dramatically. All wines purchased after the last week of May will be held until Fall. You will be required to show proof of ID and must be 21 years of age or older in order to receive your shipment. If you are not 21, FedEx will refuse delivery and will return your product to Caduceus, which will consider them damaged goods due to the extra time they have spent in delivery at unmonitored temperature and humidity. Should delivery be unsuccessful and/or refused because you are not 21, you provided an incorrect address, or no one was available to receive these perishable goods, you will NOT receive a refund and no exchange will be allowed."

I don't know what you're talking about bro. It is my humble opinion that L'Via is a just fine introduction to The Mars Volta. It's definitely no random recommendation, it's a major single and one of their most popular songs. I don't think their sound is as difficult for people to get into as you suggest but I get what you're saying. L'Via isn't as crazy and far out as much of their other material which is why it's often one of the first songs I play for new people.
..and come on man.. the words "L'Via" and "HORRIBLE" even in the same sentence together?

Best band ever? to wide open of a question for the mixed crowed here. Now as far as most influential band in this post (now I'm not saying the best band I said most influential) is easily Led Zeppelin.

I disagree with your post, but wholeheartedly agree with your signature.
Influentially you gotta go by genera, and Zepplin's got a lot of competition in theirs (even within their own time period). What about jimmi, doors, floyd, the who?
Tool is second only to Metallica for influence in their genera, only because Metallcia came first.

I'd still have to hang with Zeppelin over all these esp Metallica. I graduated from high school in the mid 80's and they didn't hit their peek in popularity till they were past their peek musically. Right around the black album is when they decided to mix in with all the other bands.
Now as far as the older bands I pick Zep as the most influential band cause they lasted. Jimmy and the Doors were popular for a little over 3 to 4 years each. Now had the Door and Jimmy not had the head of the band die would we talk about them like we do today. I'm thinking we would be into them but Jimmy would be blending in with the Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and David Gilmore's of the world. The Doors would be killer also but they would be spoken of like the Who, Stones, Beatles and so on.
Now another reason I ran with Zep is they didn't play lets change the band members like the Stones, Who, Floyd, Santana. One member of the band died and the rest realize that they can never be the same band and don't go on. You have to kind of respect that.
Now if you want a band that has changed members and has a ton of influence on the music scene is a simple little band called AC/DC

The Beatles weren't much of a influence on Zeppelins music but Elvis was big with Robert Plant. The biggest musical influence on Zeppelin came from the American blues scene of the early 50's.

Um, the Beatles were not rock and roll. They were straight up and down pop music. Elvis used a lot of Blues influence, but the melting pot that defines rock and roll brings together American sounds like R&B, Improvisational Jazz, cajun and creole sounds, country and gospel music. Rock and Roll is an American invention.
Later Beatles albums have some great rock sounds, but they're sounds that were picked up over time and travel and aren't present in their early albums.

Before love me dooooo, they were a greased hairdo rockabilly blues bar act. the pop came later with management and success.
Way before the pop, they were teenage Elvi in training.

This is a ridiculous statement. First off the Beatles were more influenced by Buddy Holy and the Crickets then Elvis. Quote:
Joining on bass in January, Lennon's fellow student Stuart Sutcliffe suggested changing the band name to "The Beetles" as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets, and they became "The Beatals"
John Lennon on how they came up with their sound "Decades after its release, the album still sounds fresh, precisely because of its intense origins." Lennon said little thought went into composition at the time; he and McCartney were "just writing songs à la Everly Brothers, à la Buddy Holly, pop songs with no more thought of them than that—to create a sound. And the words were almost irrelevant."
By 1966 their popularity dropped quiet a bit and they never toured the US again after 1966 and that includes after the release of the Sgt Peppers album.
They were good at making little girls scream but musically they weren't taken seriously by many and attribute the changing styles of their music from 1966 to 1969 to this. Paul McCartney "We sold millions of albums and sold out shows in the metropolitan areas of the United States and Europe but never were able to get the critical response to the music other then a few songs on the Sgt Peppers release"
So yes the Beatles were the first big rock act out of England and opened the door for many but musically they weren't half the influence of Elvis,Rolling Stones, the Who, and numerous Blues performers of the 50s

This always seems like a futile argument. I mean there are some observable things that pinpoint an influence in music but really how can anyone argue about the degree of influence that one band has had on another? I just don't think that's a very fact-based argument - from any perspective. I mean we can all see traces of zeppelin in a lot of bands out now. We can also see traces of elvis and the beatles in certain areas of zeppelins records. but the degree of influence isn't something that's quantifiable or identifiable imo.

Agreed. To be honest I figure most bands just are a group of guys who get together and play what they like and if it happens to sound a little like another band that is just the breaks.

Uncomparable except in rhyme scheme to time scale kinda thing. (and btw this is a shitty song by him, it's all about Stan)
Eminem raps about personal (and sometimes fictional) experiences with drugs and violence. Tool sings about life, death and our shitty society.
Tool is undeniably the best rockers of our time Eminem and B.I.G. are our best rappers I can't think of any other genres I really care for atm.

I'm on a tool kick atm. Listening to lateralus and reading the lyrics to the songs. Here's parabola. One of my top 10 favorites off that album. as a side note to my life and this band I will add that this album came out on the day i graduated high school. then five years later (one year TO THE DAY after I graduated college) I watched them play on the stage I received my degree on. I had a closer seat than my parents had! that shit was epic. tool at gammage auditorium. I know a couple members here know that place. It's amazing. I was in row 16 dead center. seat cost about 400$ but it was damn worth it.
Oh shit, I just remembered. This was also the only show ever (that I know of) where they performed Lipan Conjuring. I have a copy of it i can upload if anyone wants it. they opened the show with it. I remember danny came out with a small drum and the other guy and it was all blue and foggy on stage it was neat. they didn't use any microphones or speakers for it either. just the drum and the voice.

FB: I'm in northern new england broseph, the brother from the appalacians, biggie for life and all that...But I will do anything to see Tool when they come around again. Another big tool friend of mine told me that they have another album on their contract so they're almost gauranteed to tour again, if not I'll see them at the next festy they play at around here or something. As I said I'm going to do ANYTHING to see them short of sucking Maynard's Dick. (good song)
Coaster doing another textbook example of Coaster.
Steve: I agree I've grown out of a lot of bands since high school including many of those (SOAD, Slipknot, KMK, and Korn to be exact - sublime still kicks ass).
Tool is incredible man, just blows my mind every time I listen to it.. The lyrics, the vocals, drums, guitar.. It's all incredible. APC is nice too.

I still enjoy some sublime, I just don't like metal much anymore as for tool and the rest on that list are just unlistenable to me now. I just really got into old rock and all types of weird music. when I was in high school I liked typical teenagery music like metal and rapping, but by the time I was like 17 I was heavily into classic rock and old country/bluegrass and jazz all the weird stuff from the golden age of music. I just rather listen to an old album from the 60's over psych/metal like tool...... I like my prog rock from the first generations like Rush, King Crimson, ZAPPA.
