Yup I agree, it is hard to get a good look quickly but very worth it for the price IMO. I'm not exactly looking at 91 plants here.
You've definitely got to get a system working. For awhile I tied one branch down where there was a good angle for lighting and it was steady enough for me to get a good look. What you said works to, and as I said earlier I was sometimes lucky enough to be able to lay my plant down and get a REAL good look at them trichs.

I found a good place to get a loupe was electronics stores. Places where you can buy circuitry stuff etc. I saw them in there, but they sold this handly little 100x microscope with a led light. Even better.
