You can begin tying down the plants as soon as they are above ground, but I wait until the first sets of true leaves show. You can then continue training your plant throughout its lifecycle to keep it bushy.

You can top when the plant gets too tall, best when utilized to get the most out of growing space, same applies for LST, it is a waste unless used properly. As for time, it is subjective, when you choose to LST your plant is your call, all I will say is wait until she is established, no fiddling with seedlings, unless you have something to prove.
Also, topping is best to only do in the Veg phase, no sense introducing stress during the flowering stage by having a lady adapt to having her primary shoot cut down.
Good luck, hope that helps

The point of topping and LST is to create a bushier plant; generally topping takes place when the plant is very young. LST doesn't have to be a space control issue either, the point of both techniques is actually increased yield. People do use LST toward the end of flowering if size becomes an issue, but IMO that is a result of poor planning.

Lots of people advise against topping because it causes too much stress for the plant and LST is just as, if not more effective.
However, there does seem to be a fair amount of people that have topped and had great results actually.
So I guess it's just a preference thing really.

Also, some strains REALLY don't respond well to topping. Strains that have very little branching in the first place generally just display stunted growth rather than the desired branching.

Very true. Even with my current run, certain phenos took the LST differently than others, but the scrog was a concrete solution to keeping everything even, even when LST was used before hand.

I usually tie down after 5 or so nodes. I like to let them get established root systems before I go to work. I've had problems doing it too early and pulling roots out etc...

Yeah it is.
I applied it to my current grow. I was able to cut some very good clones.
