somebody who's good with computers!!!
    #354048 - 01/27/10 08:13 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I need some help! last night my computer was perfectly fine, but this morning I wake up and it's completely fucked!

all the color rendering is fucked up and I have no idea why. I tried a system restore and it said it failed because some program interfered with it. I can barely even read this box I'm typing it because it's neon pink and all my letters are shadowed in white. I seriously do not understand what's happening.

this computer is less than a month old so I'm freaking out, did I get a faulty graphics card or is this a virus of some sort?

and now that I think about it it's really fucking confusing that my computer is able to capture it's own retardedness in a screen shot am I right? if it were a hardware issue I would think the computer would capture it how it's supposed to look but just display it weirdly but that doesn't seem to be the case....

Sounds like a complete system failure and not a graphics problem.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to boot in safe mode yet. I just noticed the problem when I woke up and now I have 2 hours of class. When I get home I'll check it out

Also, try uninstalling the drivers for the video card and monitor..reboot and they'll install themselves, or should, and see if you get any difference....

Before you do that open msconfig and disable every startup item just to be sure its not some sort of software/hardware problem with the new windows shit

describe your problem ? could be anything from a loose monitor cable to a short in your video card or a driver issue from what youve described ???

It almost sounds viral, specially when you try to restore and it won't allow you too. Try it in safe mode when you get a chance.

Do you know or have the specs of this PC? Are you using a screen saver or shutting the screen off when not being used? Any other symptoms?

It sounds to me like a graphics card/monitor problem. Is your graphics card the one that came in the computer, or an upgrade? Also, check your monitor cables, some flatscreen monitors' get really loose on the bottom.

I don't think it's a card issue. I've experienced the same issue before - It just sounds like a drivers problems. A recent windows update could have fucked it up.

I doubt it's a serious problem.

Something similar happens to macs where the screen will turn black and remain black - it happens because the aspect ratio changed for some reason or another and it just needs a simple reset.

My first step would be to simply restart. Make sure all cables are plugged in nicely.

If the same issue occurs, uninstall your drivers - once this is done download and install a program called "Driver Cleaner" - look for it on TPB. Use it to clear the remnants of your graphic drivers which I guarantee there will be. Then download the latest drivers from the manufacturers website - so either http://www.nvidia.com or http://www.amd.com

Drivers can also screw up if previous graphics drivers haven't been properly uninstalled/installed.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that it's a laptop so no wiring issues are likely. I did recently install drivers for my
printer so maybe that's it. I just did windows restore to original factory settings, but doesn't seem to have fixedanything...

if you did system restore to factory settings nd it is still acting the same then i would say it has to be a hardware issue.

If it is still under warranty take it back!

I painted Micheal Dell's house out here and he was an arrogant Prick!!!
He had a hella huge awsome home though, that much i can say.

Buying a laptop, your kinda stuck to buying branded machines, since it is not to feasable to build one like you can a desktop pc. Check out Tigerdirect, they have some nice machines of different brands. They used to build systems to your specs with the hardware you choose. Can be a bit more expensive this way but in my opinion worth it!

I've got an HP laptop that has treated me well over the past year with no major problems. Just swap it out and once you get the bugs out I'm sure you'll like it. btw where did you get it?

My sister does have a really nice macbookpro with a massive screen and i used it to DJ with and that was quite  anice experience i must say.

A 5000 dollar PC which is what a MAC costs will outrun a mac anyday of the week...

You get what you pay for...

Naturally a low-end PC will run like shit.

Its often times not the OS that's buggy its the hardware/drivers.

If Apple were to allow people to use the MAC os on other machines like Dell don't you think people would be bitching?? Probably so.

I think I know what it might be Harry_ballsack.

My brother had a similar problem with his PC, but he was running a "Home Meida" based version of Windows 7. So the problem he had was all the red's and orange colors were *REALLY* saturated on the T.V. to the point it was bleeding into the other colors.

So, he went into the settings, and played with some werid-sounding "graphics" settings and fixed it. He found out the cause was a new update that reset the codes.

So, go to the "Display Settings" (right-click on Desktop, click 'Personalize') in Windows 7 and play with the slider settings til it looks right. It could have just been reset from a recent, unannounced Windows Update.

Hope that helps buddy.

And thanks for the Cultivation Tips!

mhbound: Nothing personal. Just ranting.

I'm pretty hardware savy and have been building my own windows computers for about 8 years now. I disagree completely with you.

Now if we're talking about desktops, then this is highly debatable in terms of hardware performance, however it is undeniable that the MAC OS is far superior to any windows platform.

The whole notion that macs are uncustomizable and on training wheels makes no sense. Customizable? What does that even mean? How do you customize your computer? Great so you can get a sick case with a plexi glass side door, LED fans and maybe even a liquid cooling system. Thats what I built a couple of years ago...

Wow you can do that with windows machines, big deal!!! Honestly, if I had a mac tower, I could rip the guts out and transfer them into a new case and have it setup exactly like that.

Can you do that with laptops? Uhhh no.... so I guess windows laptops aren't customizable either then eh? Well lets check out some of the top laptops then:
http://reviews.cnet.com/best-laptops/

Hrmmm..... woah? Macbooks like way up there - it's pretty cheap too! That's just the base model too!

But I mean, you can customize the hardware anyway when you order it online!

Customization: What else could this mean? Does it reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally matter whether or not you can change up your desktop? To some it does! You can do this on mac too! Why you would want to though I don't understand, the dock is the easiest and fastest way to navigate and use your computer.

Also, everyone seems to have the most incredible price misconceptions with apple products. If you think comparably apples are more unreasonably priced than windows computers read this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/apple-mac-leopard-windows-vista,1985.html

In that article, tomshardware built a computer with the exact same specifications as a baseline Mac Pro. They bought all their hardware from newegg.com + Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate - guess what: came out to about the same price. Just so everyone really understands what that means: Buying a Mac Pro Tower (fully built with Mac OSX installed) is JUST AS CHEAP AS buying the same individual parts, building it yourself and installing windows on it. HELLO?!?!?

Apples got some pretty nasty policies and they can be assholes for sure. They really are. However, the quality of both laptops and desktops as well as their prices are simply not something that can be debated. This endless price mongering and apple bashing is soo old already. None of it is true.

Other than their airport line products, I don't I have any complaints about any apple products I've ever bought. So far multiple ipods, 2 iphones, 2 laptops, airport express and a multitude of accessories.

Macs are on training wheels? What does that mean? I don't understand that. Does that mean the computer will most likely not break down, is simple and easy to use? I actually like that.

Windows machines are only good for gaming. You can install windows on a mac.

/End Rant

well in other news, my computer randomly fixed itself yesterday.... I just turned it on and it was fine. for some reason about 35 reboots in a row as well as complete OS reinstall did absolutely nothing, but just forgetting about it for 10 hours while I slept made all the different

that said, continue with the computer discussion, it's very interesting

PC's are schizophrenic!  I almost flippped out on my PC at work yesterday.  It kept pulling up these crazy errors.  It fixed itself after a few dozen times, and getting my blood pressure raised a bit.  Another reason I hate windows run computers.

I think this picture sums up to debate of Mac or PC!

It is so true in so many ways. First off is the basic machine, the above article goes on to say that you can buy a factory made baseline apple or build yourself a pc with quality parts for the same price. Well honestly i would prefer my home made pc of quailty parts over any thing factory built. The parts i would install would be true parts, not component parts like factory made stuff.

Quote:

In that article, tomshardware built a computer with the exact same specifications as a baseline Mac Pro. They bought all their hardware from newegg.com + Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate - guess what: came out to about the same price. Just so everyone really understands what that means: Buying a Mac Pro Tower (fully built with Mac OSX installed) is JUST AS CHEAP AS buying the same individual parts, building it yourself and installing windows on it. HELLO?!?!?

The main reason i do not have a mac is because there is no software to speak of! Mac offer a round of nice software, but that is it for mac. No third party software. I like choices and preferences not get stuck with what is available. I know what your going to say, "there is a software program for anything you can do on windows". Yup your right, but like i said, that is it, you have no choice or selection for that matter. You stuck with what apple offers you!

Pc is an awsome machine in the right hands. Has thousands of options, software choices, tweaks, and other things. Pc is not the lazy man's machine and requires knowledge of how it works and proper configuration to get the most out of it. Unfortunately, the windows/PC platform is the most used in the world, which in return is the most targeted by programmers, adware, spyware and viruses. Windows has been around for alot longer and the expoits are taken advantage of. And this is where i think pc is getting a bad name. Apple has been around but not in public like the pc. Not many people owned mac's  to exploit. But i guarantee that with the popularity of mac these days, the programmers will follow and except the new challenge of exploiting the apple OS.

So i see the photo from hemo's post and laugh cause it really does sum up the debate of pc and mac. You buy a mac and have a solid machine because, there is no altering it with anything other then apple software. Which is why apple is a said monopoly. Software developed for apple by apple, it better be right! Pc on the other hand comes with the basic body and engine, but can be modified beyond your wildest computer dreams! And just like the bikes up there, not just anyone should be tinkering with the mechanics. If configured right, watch out! You can take that basic machine and have a top fuel dragster on your hands. Or if you don't know what your doing you could have a flustering clunker on your hands.

Are you really high? Because none of what you said made any sense. What are you talking about I'm stuck with only what apple gives me? There's shit loads of third party stuff. Microsoft even makes products for mac users.

Wow man, I'm not sure if computers are really your forte, but I believe that not only has the Mac OS line been around for longer than Windows, but it stems from the UNIX family which predates DOS. Lol, so Windows has definitely not been around for longer. UNIX systems are simply safer in general, however it is Apples frequent security updates that make Mac OSX such a safe OS to use.

Ok, well you have a point about apple being on the scene before pc, But apple fell flat on its face soon as trs-80 and commador hit the market. No one but a select few had an apple machine. I can remember my first computer was in grade school and it was an apple 2. But where did they go after that? Apple has spent so much time and money on making a "perfect" machine and developing software for this "perfect" machine that they have not been able to produce an affordable machine for the home user up till the early to mid 90's. Microsoft has been able to do this by letting 3rd parties write software and to develop hardware for the windows platform. Which is also why pc has such compatibility issues with some hardware/software.

Maybe todays market allows for some 3rd party software, but any software released for mac by a third party has to be approved by apple! This has been the case and still is the case. There is a pretty good history of apple on Wikipedia case your still in disbelief.

Computers not my forte? Haha, i have a part time business repairing pc's. I hope it's my forte! And have been using computers for almost 20 years now. Apple 2 was the firstin later part of grade school, then middle school i got a TRS80 and then to a commador64 and then finally to a Hewlett Packard9( or PackardBell)  80mhz machine, and upgrades ever since!

So, about the Mac vs. Windows analogy with the bikes.....

So, I've never owned a Mac, but I've used it before. Is it true that its not customizable like Windows is? In which ways. I know the iPhone is like that: theres lots of app add-ons, but you can't change the interface into the way you like. Which is very user-friendly but not fun for us PC modders (of the OS, not the hardware).

But whats good about Macs is that theres less viruses/trojans, etc. because the platform is less common than PC's. I like that, especailly because I get some nasty viruses sometimes and I'm too poor to buy a good anti-virus program.

Anyone here owned both Mac and PC, like at the same time? What's the biggest differences and similarities between the the platforms?

I personally like the amount of programs that run on PC. Does Mac's have a lot programs you can use?

To FurrowedBrow:

I love that phot with the cars. So true. Windows are complex and "ugly", but you van "touch" all the parts (settings). And the Mac is clean and sexy, but its really simple (little customization). Awesome photo Phind!

Fill me in MACers.....

Actually, you should of read even further back: Harry said the computer "magically" fixed itself (weird right? Harry, I think you be trippin'!).
I personal think this magic was created by all the people in this thread who tried to fix the problem with their minds, and on a metaphysical plane of existance, "magically" fixed the color problem.

The End. Problem "Fixed" Now we are talking about the Pros/Con and the similarities/differences of Macs and PC's. Got an opinion? Share it.....

Ok, from what I've read on the subject apple didn't really fall flat on it's face, it was simply in third place to the trs-80 and commadore until it came out with Visicalc. Also, what are you trying to say with all this? How does this make Windows better?

Well first off Spency, I think it is  personal preference to what side of the fence you like to be. I am not necessarily saying that one is better then the other. I will say though that no matter what PC will always be more customizable, have more options and evolve faster. Also, Windows is just the operating system for PC.

Spency, If you really want to know the whole story about apple and why they are what they are, research it on the net. And Unix was not part of apple in the beginning! Unix was developed by AT&T as a programmers tools. Unix is it's own operating system! Linux and BSD were also developed using unix system. Not till OS X did apple incorporate a BSD varient of the unix system into their operating system. And 9 times out of 10 it will be run on PC.

So i am not sure what you are after by debating me on this. Read the articles and then come back here and debate this with me! Apple was my research paper back in highschool, and i may not remember it all but a quick look even on wikipedia was a breath of fresh air.

The third party software you speak of(the iphone unlocker) is a hackers tool! I believe i said this earlier, as apple catches on people will start targeting the devices and viruses and other hack tools will develop. That's inevitable! Your unlocker is not an official piece of software, sorry.

Somewhere at the bottom of the wiki article i linked to up there ,in the criticisms section it gives brief couple sentences regarding 3rd party software. And that is only a small portion dealing with iphones app approval.

I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by PC? By PC do you mean the standalone hardware. Well then of course, but we're talking about windows here. Which sucks. Besides, the evolving and varied hardware is a really narrow field in terms of the computer market. Unless your buying cutting edge hardware - the benefits of buying a factory computer over custom building your own are marginal - even in cost. With that said, this is almost inapplicable with laptops.

Well, your here telling people that there is no 3rd party software for macs. That's a complete lie. It doesn't matter what you wrote about back in high school, that doesn't make you a credible source.

Also, you addressed me remember? It's not like I'm here trying to just shit on you, I'm responding to you.

It doesn't matter. It's still 3rd party software. Anyone can write an application for Mac OS X and put it up on the web - thats what 3rd party software is. It's software developed for an operating system, by an entity other than the creator of the operating system.

Is Firefox "hacker software?"

I read that and I even checked out the full article. There is nothing about apple approving and controlling software for Mac OS X. Perhaps if you quoted something for me, I'm sure my opinion would change - however as of right now, based on my own experience as well as a lack of evidence for what you claim, I have to disagree with you.

I just think all computer systems are more or less as good as any other. Because they pretty much are.

The biggest reason for some of my friends to choose mac was the lack of viruses written for mac. But the reason there are not as many viruses is because there are less people that use mac. I could write a virus just as easy for mac as I could a PC.

(But the last paragraph is a huge tangent from the topic.)

See you want me to do all the foot work here and furnish you with a quote and your just going to disagree until i prove my point. See i don't care what you believe to be true. It is what it is! Any of the older members who grew up in the time of pc and mac know what i am talking about. If anything you need to start furnishing some sources for this info you seem to know is right!

Agreed!

Spacemonkey, the reason I disagree with you is because I'm on a mac right now. I have third party applications installed. Lots of them.

Actually mac os x is just very well secured on it's own. Frequent security updates make it immune to most all viruses out there for mac. Mac OS X has been around for such a while that it is just simply now rock solid. After a while, writing new and dynamic viruses becomes more and more difficult as eventually every hole in the system is filled in.

It's not because there are less users. Maybe in the U.S. there are less users but I see a fair amount of mac users around here.

Just plain wrong.

Windows has frequent security updates.

And the phrase "most all viruses" is poorly used because new ones are wrote all the time, of course more of them would have already been created and protected against than the ones currently around.

You don't like what I'm saying prove me wrong.

Macs have horrible interface IMO anyways.

I love my PC, and always will.

Got the comp today.  It's niiiceee.  I like this mouse more than i thought i would.  I was planning on using an old bluetooth mouse/keyboard.  the colors of the screen are so clear it reminds me of a mushroom trip.
