    #297524 - 10/15/09 02:41 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys. I know I said I'd leave a new grow till next year. But decided I need a new designer suit. Just germinated 3 White Widow feminized seeds. Waiting for them to sprout.

Some specifications:
Medium: Westland potting compost with added John Innes, perlite and sand.
Nutes: Nothing yet, Biobizz grow for veg, Biobizz bloom for flower. Seaweed extract throughout.
Light: 100-200W cfl, 400W HPS. Might try get a MH bulb for veg.
Training: Gonna try SCROG.

3 shoots are about an inch an a half tall now, showing first set of leaves after the embrionic leaves. Must set up a few CFLs soon.

You should probably edit that out of your posts.  Good luck with your grow!

All three sprouted and look healthy enough. Although only set up a couple of cfls for them today. They been stretching slightly. No point setting up a HID at this stage.

I'm planning on giving them CFL until there's maybe 8 or so leaves on each plant then transfering to a grow tent which I should be getting in next couple of weeks. Sticking in the HPS and an extractor fan and away we go.

Anyone ever veged for like 2 or three weeks and let the rest of the growth happen in flowering? I'd like to take some clones though. It's a dilema.

Ok. A little update. I'm about a week into the HPS being on and you can see the amount of growth that's happened in just that week is pretty phenomenal compared to over a month under 60 watts of CFL.

I've also FIM'd Fatso and have Casper about 3-4 inches closer to the light than Stretch and Fatso. This will kind of give me an idea about Whether low or high stress works best, and if the plants could be closer to the light without damage or stunted growth. I'll be setting up a rudimentary scrog, prob this weekend.

I'll be heading home for the holidays in a week's time so I'm considering sticking them under a couple of CFL's for the Month and a half I'm away as a kind of suspended animation. No way I can leave them under the HPS that long, the soil needs watering almost every day. I reckon they'd be ok for 2 - 3 weeks under CFL's. I'll make some excuse to come back and give them a bit of looking after in early Jan.

Day 1 of HPS:

1 week of HPS:

Here's some pics to give you an idea of why I haven't been around for the last few months.

Optics exam tomorrow!

P.S. Why was the growery down there a few days ago? A little bit concerning if you ask me.

I'm buying a new(second hand) 200W CFL with reflector (and ballast apparently) next weekend. €60. I'm thinking it'll be good for clones and some of veg growth.

Any suggestions how you guy's would approach lighting for a full crop life cycle if you'd 3 20W CFL's, 1 200W CFL and a 400W HPS lamp(it's MH compatable, I'm just waiting till I go to Dublin to get one).

For 3 plants with a 3x3 screen of green be more viable with the 400W HPS or the 200W CFL?

HPS over CFL all the way.  Use the smaller fluoros to light the undergrowth though, so you can maximize the popcorns and yields.

IMO CFL's should ONLY be used as supplemental blooming, and for vegetative growth which they work GREAT for!  I'd never veg under my HPS, that would just be a waste.

can't wait to make the switch with all your rave reviews invert.  I think I may buy a floodlight and rig it into a grow light over winter break if I got the extra $.

You are going to have to set up some sort of self watering system or those plants will die after about 3 weeks with no added water!  Make some sort of home made drip system out of large soda bottles or something.  It has to happen or you will lose em.  How do you intend to raise the lights?  Just leave them high so they don't grow into it?  You will need to have it about 16-18 inches above your screen.

I found some nice 150w floodlights that have a glass enclosure for less than my Sun System!  I might be picking up one along with another Sun System setup in the future.

Here ya go!  I think it's a good deal!

Nice, Cheap 150w HPS Floodlight!

Yeah, been thinking about it. I was intending on leaving them under some low power CFL's (About 60W) It'd mean very slow transpiration and virtually 0 soil evaporation due to heat. So the soil would probably still be somewhat moist by the end of it. Although it would be risky I agree, and undoubtedly the plants would suffer.

I'm reluctant to leave them under the HPS for longer than a few days for a number of reasons, even if I got an irrigation system set up. Fire being a major one, plants growing into the light, a noticable smell developing while I'm away(I share a house with 5 others, none of who know I grow this year).

I've almost thought out an idea about how I could irrigate for the next few weeks. It would involve a coulpe of 5L water bottles, some smaller 1L bottles, a pump, some tubing and 2 timers, one weekly, one 24 hour. I think they'd be ok with 1-1.5L of water every 2 days if left under the HPS. They'd go a month without food though.

What do you guys think of those sticks you put in the soil that automatically feed houseplants over a few weeks for use with herb crops?

Well it's about time for a little update. I'd hold out till I've installed the irrigation system on the weekend to ask your opinions but I like keeping this thing recent so I'll do that too.

Not much change in my wardrobe. I had to shift them around cause watering and feeding was a bit tricky with the orientation of the screen.

The little tray that you see is a few clones I've attempted to start. I'm expecting a fail on the cloning, tried it with the last grow to no avail. I think my rooting hormone is the cause. Using jiffy pellets to try get them started. Just got the propagator in the hardware a little while ago. Cuts were taken from the bottom two branches of each, so there's six hopefuls.
