Bagseed hydro grow - Top feed *Completed*
    #140569 - 11/04/08 05:50 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

EDIT:  4/20/09 - This grow was a lot of fun and very nerve racking.  I picked up a lot of knowledge from this experience.  I like to create these logs for myself but I also think it's good for us to build up our new forum with this kind of stuff.  I also did a lot of research on the internet looking at other people's grow logs.  That helps with finding new ideas to try to implement.  If I can do it, why the fuck can't you?

Aight everybody!  I spent the last few days really reading up on cannabis horticulturing and I think I am ready.  I drew out the floor plan for my growing space and took it to the hydro shop today to discuss my options with some people there.  Today I bought, rockwool, ph down, hydroton, a submersible pump, more rockwool, tubing for the drip feed system, 27 baskets, Bio-grow liquid fertilizer (given to me for free!  $25 value), and some silicone aquarium sealant.  I am not interested in the ebb and flow system so I will be water each plant individually.  I think I have enough room to divide the grow area into two sections for veg and flowering.  I want to be able to produce some clones and get this shit into a perpetual harvest.  For the light set up I will use a 400 watt MH bulb for flowering and probably some cfl's for the veg area.  If I had my own place I would use 2 HID systems, but since discretion and budget are factors I will go with what I already have - unless it proves to be insufficient (by my standards).  I will update this mofo with pictures as I get them.  I am going to start the seedlings out today in some rockwool.  Questions or comments are appreciated.  This will be my first grow and I don't have ALL the supplies I need just yet.  I think I will take a picture of the floor plan drawing I made up just so you guys can get a feel of what I have to work with.  Ventilation will be my biggest problem i think.  The closet is totally enclosed and I am not willing to bust through the Masonite walls to ventilate it.  If the walls were sheetrock I would do it.  but they are def. not sheet rock.  Thanks for reading!

The following pictures are a taste of what is in the forthcoming pages.  There are hundreds and hundreds of pictures in this thread.  Enjoy!

Up to this point I had been feeding them with H20 only (ph adjusted to around 6.0)
On 12/03/08 I started feeding them with FloraNova at 600 ppm.  No other additives were used.

12/05/08 Day 32

On 12/09/08 I increased the ppm's to 800.  ph remains at 6.0 and both are checked daily.
On 12/11/08 I increased the ppm's to 1,100.  ph remains at 6.0 and both are checked daily.

THE FINALE

Project Recap

Click the following text to go to the main log.
The harvest on the last plant was done on 04/08/09.  I started this project with 7 total plants.  I put the germinated seeds into rockwool on Election day (11/04/08).  I vegged the plants under 24/0 until I switched over to 12/12 on 01/05/09.  Two of the seven plants were male.  I pulled those in late Jan/early Feb.  I then had a plant that was performing really shitty and I pulled that up at least a month before the other harvests (on 03/02/09).  I then pulled up the three that were performing equally well, albeit bad.  Those were pulled on 04/03/09.  I hung those to dry and destemmed them all.  With only just the buds remaining I had 5 OZ's.  That right there exceeded my original expectations on this project.  After that harvest I had only one plant left.  This one was actually harvested a week or two early.  On 4/8/09 I was smoking a blunt in my apt late at night and heard a knock at the door.  I wasn't expecting anyone so I freaked the fuck out and cut her down a bit early.  I dried it in the dark for 8 days and that was just ennough time.  I smoked a bowl of that and was blown away.  This is some of the best bud I have ever smoked.  Plus I managed to get over 4 OZ's of it, bone dry.  So if you get nothing else out of this thread it should be that weed that you buy for $60 an OZ can produce some of the best bud you ever smoked if you put a lot of love and care into your project.  For kicks I put a picture of the crap bud that great bud came from.

I found that the roots were very healthy and were grown thick.  I was amazed at how much they had grown.  The total time on this grow was 22 weeks and 2 days OR 156 days OR 5 months and 4 days.  After I heard those knocks on the door I had everything cleaned up and put away and thrown away in about 4 hours.  I was working on pure adrenaline.  But now i have weed to last me through the summer time and I am one happy camper.  Happy 4/20 everyone and thanks for stopping by!

These pictures are from bagseed from a friend.  They are of unknown origin but apparently it was good enough weed to save the seed.  I've smoked the final product and it's not as sweet as the final plant below, but it certainly does the trick.

Crap Weed

Turned into this dank sweetness!

I'm gonna go smoke a fatty.

OK, I don't have a scanner so I took a picture.  Here's the floor plan I will be working with.

A little info about the area.  It's all carpeted (something else I will have to deal with.  The left drawing is the left side of the wall and the right drawing is the floor plan.  I am still going to maintain the front four feet of the closet for personal stuff.  I will have to have two partitions.  One that is four feet from the door and the other one dividing the remaining back section into two areas.  The flowering room will be larger than the veg room.  Both will run similar hydro systems.  For the time being I am going to focus on just getting the little ones healthy and growing.  Any ideas on what to do with the floor?  I thought about just lining it with visqueen then using that also for the partitions - I will also have to use something that is not opaque as I don't want my light escaping.

Here is a picture of the supplies I bought today.  I still have a lot more to get as well.  :frown:  The hydroton isn't pictured but came in a garbage bag size.  I think it was 50 liters for 50 bucks.  I might be wrong about that.  Stoner's memory and all.

Lastly, here is a picture of two lights that I have.

Any and all advice/comments/concerns are welcome and encouraged.

One more update for the night.  I just put the seeds into the rockwool.  I did all 6 of them.  They had all broken open the shells.  On 3 of the cubes I soaked in a solution of this bio-green fert and the other three I soaked in just distilled water.  I want to see if I notice any difference between the two sets.  Here are the seeds -

You and me both doc!  Here's an update on what I accomplished today.  I did a trial run with the system I have set up.  I think this shit is gonna work out just fine.  :bigblunt:  This reservoir is 37 gallons.  lol.  I might run 2 pumps in each reservoir but haven't decided on that yet.  The purpose there would be that I am going on vacation in November for 4 days then again in December for 8 days.  I don't know exactly what to do to prepare for that.  I guess I can work on the automation until then.

I also noticed one seedling that is about ready for the lights.  I will take pictures of that when it gets more interesting.  I still need to find a reasonably priced white grow tray to put the baskets in.  i think a 3x3 will hold 9 plants with these square baskets.  Anyway, i have to acquire it first.  I think that is my next purchase.  Lastly, here is the fertilizer that the hydro guys gave me.  At a tsp per liter this stuff will last forever!

Thats a nice setup. I assume it will be drip correct? Which of the seedlings pop'd? Was it distilled water or fert? I have never used any chemicals on seedlings, I'm anxious to find out how it goes.

Powder hydro nutes always scare me... Just to be safe, put your pump inside a pair of pantyhose to act as a prefilter.

Anyway, keep it up.

Good advice about the pantyhose, thanks!  I hadn't read that before but sounds very logical.  It's interesting over the last few days I haven't noticed any difference between the fert'd seeds and non fert'd.  I put 2 of them under lights this morning - one was watered with the fertilizer and the other was just distilled water.  They look identical.  I will probably put the other four under the lights tomorrow or saturday.  And yes, this will be either a drip system or a constant flow system run periodically.  I need to get my garden tray before I can determine that for sure.  Any suggestions on that?

Yup, cement mixing trays from home depot. You can get them for about 5$ in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. While you're there, you can grab 'through fittings' to attach a hose to the bottom of the tub as a drain to the rez.

You know, I went to Lowes on Tuesday to find those trays, i was looking exhaustively in the garden section.  I found nothing.  I didn't try the cement section or whatever dept that would be.  This is something I will take care of on Saturday.  I'll post more pictures at that time.

Back in my early high school smoking days I remember getting some crystally bud and the guy told me it was hydro.  We thought that was the coolest shit ever.  I was soo dumb back then, well dumber than now, i guess.  But anyway, back in the day hydro was like a myth for us - in rural kansas.  I also think it is going to be awesome to smoke my own grow.  I've eaten my own mushrooms before, but I think i would get even more satisfaction out of the weed - as I use it every day as opposed to mushy use quarterly.  [/rant over]

I went to home depot today.  That place is always so busy on a sat morning.  I usually go on weeday evenings when no one is around.  Anyway, they were all out of the cement mixing trays and didn't have any in the garden section either.  I then went to a different gardening store and picked up just about everything I need with the exception of the HID system.  I got all the through fittings I needed - they are actually specific for an ebb and flow system, 4x3' garden tray (white botanicare), 2 heavy duty grounded timers, a max/min temp/hygrometer, lots of black and white polyfilm, and maybe a couple other items i can't recall at this time.  Anyway, I am going to put it all together this afternoon.  Aaaannnndddddddd im broke again.  :frown:

I might need to go get some plywood to put the tray on, since the stand it is on is only about a foot wide.  I will have a foot hanging off each side without ply wood.  ehh, i'll see how it works first.

OK, more pictures!

Those top two are the fittings I used for the tray.  I will be able to convert this tub into an ebb and flow set up if i need to.  Here are a couple pics of the little guys.  These two that I put into the bigger rockwool cubes had their roots coming out the bottom of the cubes.

I think I am going to have to get rid of one of them in the smaller cube already.  :frown:  The one in the lower left.

And the family photo...

Thanks guys!

I am not going to be updating this everyday like I have been.  Everything is basically set.  Hopefully growth continues.  I have never grew weed past the seedling stage so wish me luck.  I brought the ph of the water they are now getting from 7 to about 5.8 using GH ph down solution.  A gallon of that shit is going to last me years!  lol.  I still don't have any nutrients.  Soon I think i will need to get that stuff and get it going.  Then I will need to get my HID system and then I will be golden.  Here's a little bit of progress.  I went to town with that aquarium sealant.  I guess my thinking is that if the roots outgrow the baskets then I will have to switch to do an ebb and flow system so the roots can continue to grow in the dark.  we'll see i guess.

^This is the one I think will have to be discarded.^

Do you guys think it would be a wise decision to give these sprouts 24 hours of light a day?  They have been getting 18-19.

Yeah, that stuff does smell rank and i've smelled some pretty bad stuff.  lol.  Here's another small update.  Several of these plants are going gangbusters with their roots and their top parts.  Let's hope that continues and accelerates a bit more.

I personally like to run 24/0 as long as heat isn't a problem. The plants will grow a bit faster under 24/0 than 18/6 but its all a matter of circumstance.

I would cover that rockwool with mylar or some other reflective material.
bounce the light back and discourage mold and bacteria growth. Other then that looking pretty sweet.

I've got some droopy leaves.  And I have got some very agressive rooting on one of these plants.  I really think i have been overwatering these things.  I had to dispose of one of them today.  it just wasn't taking root and not growing.  :frown:  Here's a couple pics i took about 10 minutes ago.

Check out the one that has the really yellow tips.  It has been recovering over the last few days.  I hate that it's so stressed this early in life.  Also notice the yellow cotyledon leaves on the plant with the droopy leaves.

I also found three more seeds that i germinated yesterday and had grown so much that I put them in rockwool cubes this evening.  I posted a picture of the bud that these seeds came from a while back and can be seen here:

$50 an OZ weed.  Let's see how those buds turn out - hopefully.   I posted that in the Brick weed thread.

edit: that bud was $60 for an oz not 50 as I stated earlier.

I will be going out of town for 4 days on wednesday - returning on Sunday.  So with this in mind I have been focusing on the automation of this system.  I bought an air pump and a little hose that attaches to it on two sides so it provides SUPER aeration.  I got some panty hose as the doctor suggested to put around my pump.  I also bought another 48" light fixture and got similar lights.  I also bought a ppm reader and a new deadbolt.  I also bought some tract for lighting and a tract fan as well.  I guess I bought this shit in haste since it's really hard to find a small oscillating desk fan around here in the winter.  I am not sure if i am going to be able to get it installed.  I haven't taken it apart enough to find out if it's above my head or not.  Here are some pictures.  I also have a $300 check coming to me so I will just use that money to buy up the rest of my equipment - GOOD LIGHTS!  I will do that as soon as the money is in my hand.  Also, when i get back from vaca I think I will start in with the nutrient delivery.  Thus far I have been providing just water alone.  Anyone have a suggestion for bulb's and reflector?  I know I am going to get a 400w galaxy digital ballast so I need something that would go well with it.  Thanks for stopping by again.  :burnone:

Those lights in these pictures were raised so I could take a decent picture.  Normally they are a few inches from the tops of the plants.  If I manage to get this tract fan installed and running I will post a pic.  My fear is that I have to take it back and get a refund.

Also, the plan is to run the drip feed 1 time per day for 15 minutes (EDIT: timer limit is min of 30 minutes. So i ran it 1x per day for 30 min).  I will run the air pump 2-3 times per day to keep the water from getting stagnant.  I also have a lid for the rez to reduce evaporation.  I haven't done a trial run yet but i don't anticipate any problems.  The parts per million are below 100 and the ph has been adjusted to roughly 5.8.  I spent the afternoon looking for the receipt for the fan and I found it.  I am going to have to take it back along with the tract that i bought.  I did see a small oscillating fan at a store today.  I will go back and purchase it tomorrow.  What do you guys think?

I just got back from a little trip across the country.  Was gone for 4 days.  First thing I did was check the plants.  First thing i noticed was the smell.  I can't believe these things reeked so bad.  I will have to get an ionizer or something soon.  it's probably ok for now.  They grew quite a bit in the last four days too!  It's nice to go away and come back with fresh eyes and notice all that growth.  One of them (and you'll see which one) is growing all goofy.  I've never seen this problem before.  I will probably have to discard one of these plants already though.  It's just not pulling it's weight.  Pics to come later.  lunch time!

looking like a nice little setup dude, good luck on it   im trying a multi-dwc setup, and i also am thinking of canning 1 plant of 5.  .  .  even if it turns out female not sure if I wanna keep her, she seems to create plenty of stems w/o much growth the others have normal growth but i think I may be having some pH issues. Short on cash because of emergencies; seen some pH meters on ebay for $10 im gonna buy one just to have something & the some ph up/down.  Bad timing you could say. .

Thanks guys!  I also like a clean set up.  I guess I got that habit through mycology.  The issue I seem to be confronted with now is the root growth.  I moved a few of these baskets around and saw that the roots were already growing through the bottom of the baskets.  I am wondering if I should just put some white/black poly film over the top of the baskets and just leave it at that or just switch to an ebb and flow set up altogether.

Wait, did I read correctly? Did you say you were giving them just plain water?

Quote:

Thus far I have been providing just water alone.

Plain water alone cannot support plant growth. I am very surprised they even lived. Your babies require nutrients to grow, not light alone. I use a very dilute solution of nutrients even with my seedlings. The last pictures you posted are evidence of this. Your plants have extremely small leaves for their size; my leaves are usually at least 3"-4" by the 2nd or 3rd node.

I think you said you had nutrients now though so hopefully they will be looking better. Keep us updated!

Lol, you read it right.  Water and ph down.  I was going to wait for the little ones to get a bit bigger before I started to add the nutes.  I can't hit up the store tomorrow for the nutes so i will have to go on thursday at lunch.  Any recommendations on nutes from general hydro?  I was thinking about the flora gro and flora bloom from this page.

From GH I really like their FloraNOVA series. It is two part, grow and bloom, and it does a fantastic job without any additives or supplements. Lately I've been leaning towards the Advanced Nutrients line as they are the only company that boldly states they test and design their products for marijuana. Either way, you need nutrients as soon as possible. The yellowing of your leaves and the general stunted growth is defintly due to the lack of essential minerals and organic compounds. Best of luck!

Thanks, and I will.  I bought some FloraNova grow today.  I mixed it up in my water to just above 600 ppm then fed them all for 30 minutes.  Hopefully that's not too high for the smaller plants.

i have always wanted to try the floranova series.  i have some yellowing / burn marks too.

i am currently w/ a homemade tea.  .  .

2 tsp bat guano
1 tbspn FF Grow big
1 dose of CalMag

and two more secret ingredients.

they thrive when they get some of this... i noticed day #2 the size difference and the vigor.

What's FF?  Are the secret ingredients semen and breast milk?  That floranova was 29$ for 1 quart.  I had to mix in like 10 tablespoons of it.  I might switch to a smaller rez.

how would you guys suggest foliar feeding??  i have a nute deficiency or possible lock out i want to change, and i heard foliar is a good "quick" way for a plant to abosrb and recover while it feeds from the roots.

so i've used a fine mist and misted my babies today as well as feeding them.

A fine mist sounds about right. I like to do it about 20 min before the lights go out so the water can't lead to light burns.I also try not to foliar feed very often, maybe once every third grow.

I think I will update this with pictures every friday from here on out.  Here's this weeks update.  I switched to floranova nutes on wednesday night and they have had 3 feedings with it.  ppm remains at 620 or so and ph at around 6.0.  Lights are on 24 hrs a day for the last two weeks or so.  I am hoping to have an HID system by New Years.

I have read and have witnessed watering @ night can increase mold susceptibility.  Water before the lights come on.

I don't know about increasing mold susceptibility considering these plants are in veg, maybe in flower. HPS lights achieve full intensity so quickly that the water doesn't have enough time to evaporate before the light can burn them if you water in the beginning of the light cycle, outdoors is a different matter entirely though. But don't take my word for it, to each their own.

Thanks bro!  I keep comparing the growth of my 7 plants to other grow logs and am just getting discouraged doing that.  When do you guys stop giving your seedlings only H20 and start with a nutrient formula?  This appears to be what stunted the growth (i think dr said that above).

heh i fed mine for the first time at like a week .... quickly realized that was a mistake, burned the plants and lost like 2-3 days of growth, luckily i flushed fast and they recovered without any major damage, after that i fed them again when i repotted them, which was like  two and a half weeks in and with way better nutes, that seemed to work

here's something to make u feel better

i transplanted this poor baby at about 2 weeks and fed it as well, and that almost killed it, now it's barely recovering after some serious flushing

it's 3 weeks old now and here's what it looks like

i'm growing mine in soil tho.... i don't know shit about hydro

Hmmmm, i added more nutrient solution to the rez today before the feeding - which should start in the next few minutes.  The ppm is now 1,100.

PICTURE UPDATE

Hmm, just looking at the last update I did I can really see the growth.  When you examine the plants more than 5 times every day seeing the growth is hard.  That's really why I like doing these logs for myself.

Additionally, I am wondering if the row of three plants (which were all three taken from that bud picture I showed you guys on 11/18) is of an indica strain.  Notice how much fatter those leaves are than the four growing behind them?

^indica??^

you have some good plants growing man, good job keep up the good work   they are nice and green, i still have purple on my stems & I wonder if its purple because of a purple gene or if it was a nutrient lock up

:pimp3:

Wow man, great stuff! This is the first time I've checked your log, and it looks like things are going along well. Envious of your setup!

You're right about the indica, and I thought it was looking like some kind of afghani. Looking at the bag weed, I thought it looked like mexican sativa, but grown right and not treated like they treat schwag. Talk about hybrid vigor though. When do you go to flower? I'd recommend topping those babies, except for the smaller one or two I guess. Topping and then training the side branches might be a necessity unless you'll have six feet of height for them and sufficient side-lighting starting from the middle and on down. Those look like some pretty crazy sativa ladies that will love to overgrow.

Enjoy having a gallon of the pH-, it sucks to almost run out. :smirk: It looked like you were having some micro-nutrient issues when they were smaller, probably due to the pH being lower, but it looks like you've been straightening that out. Feel free to adjust pH levels around to see how the plants respond, because even each phenotype can have a different optimum. Setting up your irrigation to be able to have individual reservoirs would be a fun idea if you want to really go mad scientist with it, especially if you'll be running different genetics at the same time...

Might have been more I wanted to comment on, but can't think of it right now.  :stoned2: Looking forward to what is coming with your grow! Do you have plans for trying out known genetics?

Thanks guys!  By known genetics do you mean a clone?  Are there other ways to obtain known genetics?  Like seeds?  After this grow I am planning on getting a house and really getting into this stuff.  I'd like to grow out some Master Kush first and get a mother plant from that then start work on cloning it and growing out maybe 8 plants at a time.  I think I am going to fill the tray with hydroton this week so that the roots will actually grow out into it - through the baskets.  Right now the roots all look like they are constricted when they hit the bottom of the tray.  I have to leave town next Saturday and won't be back until 8 days later.  I am very nervous about this.  Nervous about my landlord entering while i am gone.  I've got some ideas though.  but they involve closing the closet door for 8 days.  :frown:  I've got an air purifier that I could put outside of the room and run a hose into the closet though.  I will have to get a deionized or something for the smell too.  Flowering will begin as soon as I get the HID system purchased and set up - guaranteed to be no sooner than January 1.  So these ladies (hopefully) have another 2 weeks of veging at least.  I will look into topping the plants off.  I think they are going to outgrow this little tray that i am using.  i was thinking about doing a scrog for them.  One of the plants all ready has three main stems.  In this picture you can only see two of them clearly...

Also, I am amazed at how fast and hearty these stalks grow.  These things are very sturdy.

UPDATE TIME!!!

^See how glossy that last one is?  I seem to be having some difficulty, i think.  The leaves at the bottom of some of the plants are turning yellow and then falling off.  it's only the very bottom leaves though.

I am about to leave again.  This time I will be gone for about 8 days.  I hope these beauties make it through unsupervised.  I will have 2 fans going in the room 24/7 and a deionizer also going 24/7.  I bought more hydroton and filled the entire tray with it.  That was after i rinsed, soaked with h202, drained and partially dried them.  I also moved the entire tray lower to the ground so that i could have more flexibility in the lights.  I will not move them again until harvest.  I'm going to be keeping the closet door closed the entire time I am away also.  Let's all just have positive thoughts for the next week and hope we all stay safe from those evil injustices.

your plants are much taller than mine   Looking good though.  I am prepared very much more for my next grow now that I am with a full setup.

You have gotten me interested in tables bud, looking good.  Hopefully things will be fine while you are gone.

Things were fine indeed!  Merry xmas everyone, even you atheists!  lol.  The plants are showing some signs of problems but generally they are looking GREAT.  They grew another 4 or 5 inches in the eight days I was gone.  I will show you all how i fashioned a lock for the door.  I had two fans and a deionizer going 24/7 while i was gone.  The door was shut the entire time so fresh air was minimal.  I was really worried about my babies while i was gone.  It's a HUGE relief that they are still looking good overall.  The tray is just a forest now.  It's time to get the HID and flower these bitches out.  :bigblunt:

I ordered the light today.  I got a Yield Master II 6" Air-Cooled Reflector - Supreme, a 400 w Galaxy Digital Ballast and a HPS 400 w bulb.

Next week will be flower time.  When I do the rez change I will change the nutes and the light.

Yeah, they had one set up in the store and it was running cool and quiet - i had to have it.   I am always surprised at how busy the hydro store is around here.  There are always like 5 people in there when i go.  I think it's great, supporting local business.  :burnone:

I'm using a 37 gallon rez that probably has 30 gallons of water in it.  I have changed the rez each week.  I don't know how many changes that is, but with a large rez it takes a lot of that stuff to get the job done.  I just poured it in until the ppms were where i wanted them.  I used just about the entire quart during veg.  I will probably use the same on the bloom cycle.  But to answer your question, i don't know.  I have nothing to compare this expereince to.  Im drifting in uncharted waters bro.  lol.  I do like its simplicity.  Just pour it in, adjust the ph and your good to go for the week.  i wanted a fert that was in a single solution so i dont have to mix a bunch of shit.  im not too strapped for cash sso i could justify the expense of nearrly 30$.  One thing I do not like is how nasty it makes your hoses, rez and tray.  Each change I have to thoroughly clean it out and alcohol/salt scrub the hoses.  Maybe that's overkill, but i like my shit clean god damnit!  lol.

well man I would say that I would do that too... I just did that yesterday myself for my dwc.  I think i need to get a submersible pump hardcore to make continual movement and spray the roots more.  I think it was wise for you to do so.  Your plants look great.  I am suffering a K deficiency imho, its what i had decided.. its fits all the symptoms and i am treating it with fish mix, by GH.  6.6% K, and I figure i top feed onto the root ball it would be better and more direct.

HALFTIME

Well, I think we are just about to the halfway point of this grow.  I think that the problem I am having is a problem of over fertilization.  This morning I drained the rez and put in 25 gallons of filtered water (which was still 220 ppm's) and mixed it down to 5.9 ph.  I just ran it through for about 20 minutes.  I've learned a lot while doing all this.  I am either going to be really happy in march or really upset.  Two months ago today they were just seeds.

And now they are mini trees.

^Pic from last week.^

This is where the log starts to get interesting.  I hope They are all females.  We'll be finding out soon.  Stay tuned........

How much did that light setup run ya?

I'm planning on stepping up to a HPS when I graduate this semester and move out west. CFLs are great for a first grow and trial/error, don't get me wrong. But I feel like I learned enough from my first grow that I could significantly increase yield with a 400w HPS.

Yeah, it sounds like a step in the right direction for the both of us.  The total cost with tax and all was 330.  I could have gotten it cheaper online, i found a couple places that had the ballast a few bucks cheaper but ehh.  if it's worth doing its worth doing right.  I want big, fat glistening buds.

ahhh you caught me!  I fuck up like that sometimes.  I meant females.  I need to take some more pictures of my crop.  I ran 3 feeding cycles with ph adjusted h20.  I turned off the lights for the first time in over a month today.  They were off from 7 am to 7 pm.  This way they are on only when im here.  I'm paranoid and supervision is paramount at this juncture.  I mixed up some nutes this evening as well.  I mixed floranova veg and bloom at a 1 to 4 ratio.  I should be getting that light any day now.  they had to order it.

My batteries died.  :frown:  Only three pics this time round.  The three plants in the back are 24 inches each.  There is one plant in the front that is like 9 or 10 inches tall.  The others are just overpowering it.  Also, the leaves appear to be bright yellow in one of the pics.  I think this is just a photography problem.  I will be SOOO glad when i am done with this project.

SPECIAL UPDATE!!!

Well i got my shit today.  The light is running right now.  It's a million times better than what i had previously.  Really though.  I am going to have to do something about the light - since i run my day cycles at night with the door open usually.  door faces a wall of windows so you can see the issue.  Anyway, it took a lot of fucking work tonight to get all this put together.  I didn't have anything decent to hang up the lights with.  My walls are Masonite and I do not want to puncture them.  Literally the only thing I have in my possession that I could use was my ironing board.  So what, i go to work with wrinkled clothes for a couple months, no biggie.  I cleaned it all up and here she is...

The shit

The setup

The GREEEEEN

You can sure tell the difference between the light spectrums.  I also believe that this reflector will accommodate an MH bulb as well.

It...just...got...serious!

Nice! You and your plants will love that light. I love the ironing board light hanger, you could try a shower curtain bar, they are cheap and effective. Do you every use any photo editing software? You can fix the problem with the orange tint in photoshop quite easily, or your camera might have a white balance option that you could try.

thanks!  Ahh, good!  I was wanting to do something about that.  I used to have photoshop that i got from a friend but for some reason it left my computer.  I will try the white balance option first.  I'd love to have photoshop again if anyone knows where a reliable, free version can be found.  I have also got a long clothes hanger that would have done the trick but it would have required even more ghettoness to make it stay balanced.  The ironing board has those legs on each end that help distribute the weight of the reflector.  it works for now.  i might need to end up doing something else if the plants get too tall.  I took off the tempered glass that was on there and let it run all night.  When I checked it this morning, just before the lights were scheduled to go out the temp was 73 degrees.  perfect!  The heat didn't seem to be an issue.  the door was partially open though.  I might try it with the door shut tonight.

i keep my door pretty shut and it stays about 78 in the room.  I use a high velocity fan though to keep the air moving  Im satisfied, it doesn't feel so hot walking into the room w. my new fan. at night it doesnt get a fan it gets covered and the door stays partially open.  I have checked, there is 0 light leaking into the plant area when this time comes around.

a MH bulb/conversion bulb would be GREAT for that ballast, your next grow should incorporate it.  You can find them 400W for around $35 if you search online enough.:gethigh:

I think I have positively ID'd the sex of the first plant.  AANNNDdd it's a male.  :frown:  It's the fist picture.  let me know if you think i am wrong.  The second and third picture I think is female though.  Sucks that that male plant is one of the taller plants.  Oh well, it'll give more light and space to the remaining females.

Upon a closer inspection tonight I have positively identified 4 females and 1 male so far.  There are two small ones that are lagging a bit (lot).  lol.  Those 4 females just happen to be the tallest 4 of 5.  :bongload:

in the 2nd picture it looks like the leaves are trying to dissipate moisture, overwatered... they are curling the sides upwards, which means its trying to release as much moisture as possible.  Could be a sign of over water, or salt build up.  When is the last time you did a flush?

I did a flush the last time I changed my water - which was last week - maybe 8 days ago.  I am actually doing a flush tonight after the lights come back on.  The next two waterings will be with H20 only.  That's surprising that you say they look overwatered.  I water them one time per day for 30 minutes and that's it.  My timer won't let me do it any less than 30 minutes.  lol.  For the 30 minutes it's feeding the water streams out fairly good.  It's a constant stream.  I haven't measured the output though.

im still doing it as a drip.  I've got everything set up to be ebb and flow but I don't wanna do that.  OK, so i can see all the preflowers here.  I chopped down one of the males last night.  I am about 85% sure their is one other male and that the other 5 are female.  I can live with that kinda percentage!  i can't wait to watch these buds develop.  I'll chop the other plant in the next couple of days.

I did three feedings with only ph adjusted h20 that had a ppm of about 150.  Tonight I put in the FN bloom.  I didn't mix any of the other veg floranova.  The ppms are around 830 ppm.  Oh i did make a mistake.  I have been doing two feedings per day for the last few days.  so one hour of water per day.

Yeah, there's lots of room for improvement here.  lol.  Consider this a trial run.  Once I get a house I think I will be growing all different strains to find the few that I like the best.  Then I can just grow them once a year and have my supply for the rest of the year.  Anyway I am going to figure out this lighting situation - the color of the pictures i mean.  I had to move the light up about 3 or 4 inches because of new growth.  It stays around 77-78 when the lights are on.  Plus they have a good supply of moving air going across them.  What sucks is that there is a really small plant that is less than half the size of the bigger four females.  Oh, also i got 5 females and 2 males.  Can't remember if i mentioned that.  I just can't wait to see some buds and some crystals!

^male plant before

^male plant after

^male plant after that last one

I'm running low on space.  I think i can only afford about another 12 inches of growth before their size becomes a problem.  Although, I suppose I might be able to rig it up with this ironing board.  Since it expands and grows taller.  that'd be a bit risky but might be a last resort.  Here's another one.  See how much they have grown!  It's nuts.

:crazy2:

I hope you're right polk!  Welcome back from the clink!  I got a bit of bad news though.  These things are growing like gangbusters man.  They must be at least 4 feet tall now.  I can't lower them any more than I have already.  I can raise the light anohter 4 or 5 inches but that is it.  Time to do some bending.  The tallest plant got burnt last night.  Well, i don't know if it's burnt or just heat stressed.  I will find out in an hour and a half.  This morning it looked kinda bad.  I hope it can recover.  Tonight I will move the lights to their maximum position.  I think I will also bend the plants tonight or maybe tomorrow.  Any suggestions on bending plants before I do the research?

UPDATE!

This is the first of the bud updates.  Last night I changed the rez and used only FN bloom.  At the next rez change I will use the bloom fortifier too.  The ppm's are at 1125.  Just looking at the room in person - I am going to have a lot more bud than I anticipated.  And that makes me smile real fuckin big!   There is also not a lot of smell yet.  I anticipate that the smell will become a problem.  More shit to buy I guess.  I think that when I am done with all this I am going to add up all my expenses and put it down in my journal.  I'm sure i've spent well over a grand in the last three months on this project.  A lot of that expense is from items that will be used and used and used though.

Notice how I fucking scorched this first picture.  I did it a few days ago.  :frown:  I can't get over how tall these plants have gotten.

Can anyone comment on why these plants seem to be yellow where all the new development is - the bud sites?  Since early on in this grow I have noticed that there was yellowing but it does turn green.  Is this normal?

My one problem with the floranova line is Mg deficiencies. Try adding a bit of cal-mag and I bet it clears right up.

Your plants are looking amazing! Those girls are going to get fat.

yeah, looks like you got a nice cola going on that other one.  :burnone:

I just realized that I had a light on in the grow room from 8 am to 11:30.  So it got about 3.5 more hours of light (albeit weak cfl light from 4 feet away) than they normally do.  I hope that doesn't fuck em up too much.  :frown:

Well I added 8 tbsp's of cal mag plus (Bontanicare) yesterday.  That is half the recommended dose so I will see how it does.  Mid next week I will add the bloom fortifier.

hubba hubba dude, looking good.

a cheap source of magnesium is epsom salts; or you can get the pills w/ zinc (vitamin available @ store) and smash'em up for a cheaper alternative to calmag.

yeah, im not sophisticated enough to try something like that just yet, and i already bought the cal mag.  I took a picture to show you the space i have left in my closet.  These plants grow like vines.  This is a new perspective as far as the pictures go that I have shown thus far.  Up to a few days ago i was still keeping my clothes in the closet.  They are gone now in anticipation of the smell gradually rising.

this grow has turned out way better than i could have ever hoped for.  gotta sprint through the finish.  im bending plants everyday now.  it sucks.  I think i am going to just take some time and level them all off.

Last night I added some bloom fortifier that i posted earlier.  Over the past 24 hours I have noticed substantial swelling of the buds.  One of the buds has started to turn orange.  I dont think thats a good thing this earrly on.  But overall the plants are WAY too fucking big and all but one are bent over and snaking their way around the perimeter of the lighted area.  Should provide for a nice canopy.  Lots of buds growing.  I'm stoked.  I did a flush last night and replaced the nutes.  ppms are 1125 and ph is 5.8.  I have added cal mag and the bloom fortifier.  I will post the new pictures in an hour or so.

Thanks!  In my first post on this thread I have been keeping a weekly update with a picture of the whole grow and the days accumulated.  Additionally, I got a new Digital SLR camera yesterday so all new pictures should be of higher quality.

1/30/2009 Day 88 - Flowering Day 26

added cal mag and bloom fortifier this past res change.  Buds are coming along nicely.

UPDATE!!!

Thanks!  I got an update here.  I changed the res last night and added perhaps too much of the bloom fortifier.  the leaves are all curled in tonight.  they are curled in length and width.  you'll see what i mean in the pics.  The ppm's are 1150.  I have 8 tbsps of cal-mag in it, 6 tsps of bloom fort, and the rest was FN bloom.  plus the ph buffer.  But this update includes the newly added TRICHOMES!

It's just a mass of green at this point.  I have only removed leaves that were dead.

Well I just took out 10 gallons of nute water from the rez.  I replaced it with pure water.  I didn't add anything else to the res except forr ph down.  ppms arre 900 and will remain there for the next two feedings.

thanks!  Over the last two days i have dropped the temperature in the grow room down to as high as 72 and as low as 60.  Some of the plants look a bit stressed from the light.  Buds continue to develop.  Some faster and fuller than others.  One of my plants is putting on a pathetic showing.  But one right next to it has enough buds for 2 plants.  lol.  I am going to take a guess and say i get 4 oz's dry.  That will last me about 4 months.  Damn, it also took me 4 months to grow this one out.  I let them veg too long though and underestimated the growth during the flowering phase.  Next time I will do it with more and better plants and with a better ventilation system.  Now that I really think about it.  I will be disappointed if there's less than 4 oz's there.

I usually only veg for 4-6 weeks before I induce flowering. This grow is a fine example of how bag seed can turn out good if you can grow lol. I always hate people telling me that schwag seeds or bag seed will just automatically grow schwag lol.

Keep on growin

Thanks Dephect!  So far the buds look like anything but schwag.  One of the plants was actually grown from some weed i got for $50 an oz (pic earlier in this thread).  The other four plants were picked randomly out of a few hundred seeds that my good buddy had saved over the years.  I'm interested to grow out some seeds i get from an online seller.  I'd like to try out Master Kush and a mandala strain.

Update: Flowering Day 40! Day 102 overall

Last night I did a reservoir change.  I found the roots had started growing all the way down into the drain.  I noticed this last week as a matter of fact.  I removed the roots and proceeded as normal.  I just did the same thing this time.  I don't think this will be an issue.  The drain cap that I put on the drain was a good one and I also have another drain attached above the root line that also has a filter cap on it (typical ebb and flow design).  The buds have started to explode and swell up.  It's really a beautiful thing to watch.  I have squeezed a couple of the fatter buds and my fingers are almost visibly sticky afterward.  The smell is very piney.  I hope that changes.  When i did the res change last night I added distilled water for 1/2 of the water and filtered drinking water for the rest.  ppms were like 100 or so.  I did a full day's feeding with no nutrients and only ph adjusted.

These two pictures were taken 24 hours ago.

This pic is a bit off but it is pretty neat nonetheless.  Check out the trichromes along the stem to the lower left.

The following pictures were taken tonight on 2/13/09.

^^^^This is a tiny bud from one of the very bottom branches.  I didn't prune it early on and have just been pulling out dead leaves.

I took several hundred pictures tonight and went to town with the camera.  Here's a neat shot that just turned out all fucked up, but i like it.

Tonight I added the nutes.  1115 ppms with fn bloom and bloom fort. ph is 5.8.  no cal mag

coming along nicely, bro. maybe consider trimming up the undergrowth? you could even use the cuttings for clones if you wished.

I have been hesitant to cut down the bottom limbs.  I had read in one of the growing books I reference that pruning changes the hormone development and should not be done in the flowering stage and that the optimal time to do that was 2 weeks prior to flowering.  This will be my first and last grow for a while.  My nerves are running frantic 24/7.  lol.  On another note, i got a tripod today so hopefully my pictures will be a bit better.  I looked at a nice macro lens but it was about 700$.  I wont be getting that until later on.

I understand that nerve thing. No one knows but my dog almost let a friend know. Said friend is burning one with me. Let the dog in. He always waits for doors to be open for him. Not this one time. He pushes the bedroom door open and I could see the light. My friend did not.Glad he was stoned. Freaked me out.

Good Luck and grow save.

Sounds like you had a close call there.  Luckily for me I am in a new city and don't know anyone over here.  Aside from anyone who has looked at this post there is one other person who knows i have this going on.  Anyway, I am going to be getting some DNF Carbologic in the next few days.  I'm hoping that will fatten some of these buds up even more in the next few weeks.  ALSO, i received a VERY special surprise yesterday.  Got some OG Kush from a dispensary in early Feb.  Last night i was breaking up a bud (the large one in the picture below) and out popped a seed!  It looked just like the other seeds I have previously germinated.  So depending on when this grow finishes I might start that one out.  We'll see.  I was excited to find a single seed though - cause this bud is the fucking bomb.  lol

Fixed!  And I agree.

On Monday I added 30 grams of carbologic to the res.  I'm taking pictures of the same bud every day for a while so that I can document the growth.  I have read and heard from multiple different sources that this carbo logic will noticably increase bud size.  I can also use it during my flush.

Update: Flowering Day 47! Day 109 overall

These bitches are ripening quickly now.  Several nice buds have developed orange stigmas over the last week.  One plant is growing much differently (weaker and faster) than the other 4.  It looks like it's going to be harvested before the others which is something I hadn't anticipated but isn't a big deal.  Some of these buds are just absolutely dank.  I am uber tempted to just snag one off but I think that would be a bit disrespectful - like picking an immature mushroom.  Anyway, i've waited 109 days (2,616 hours) to this point.  What's another couple weeks?  I am really hoping to see some more aggressive growth over the next 2 weeks.  I can't beleive how weak the smell is.  I am having no problem with smell yet.  When i squeezed the biggest bud i smelled my fingers and it was still strong pine smelling.  It didn't have the distinct pot smell i've come to love.  I hope that changes.  Enough words.  Pictures!

I finally donated to the site.  In the mean time i just used imageshack to host em.  So here's a few pics.

Damn, i got my supporter status pushed through but it's still limiting my uploads to 1 mb.  those pictures i have been posting with this new slr camera are 3.5-4.5 mb each and i've been doing those three at a time with no problem.  i've only uploaded 838 KB over the last 7 days too.  Anyone got an idea as to what the issue is?  Also, since i am close to 1,000 posts I will try to have my 1,000 post be completed harvest pictures of this grow.

Me too!  It will be a real relief when i can get this stuff all finished up and vacuum sealed.  I have become concerned about the lack of bud development on some of the branches, not just the lower ones but some of the top ones.  I am also concerned about some of the leaves.  They are really skinny and curled up.  I got a couple pictures tonight.  Tonight I added the remaining FN grow to the rez and a bit more of the bloom.  It brought the ppms to 1230.  Let's see how that effects it.

MASSIVE UPDATE: Flowering Day 54! Day 116 overall

Alright, it's time for another full update.  This is also an administrative update to show you the materials I have been working with over the past 4 months.  These are all just bud pics for the most part.  Over the last 48 hours i have noticed a lot more trichomes and orange pistils.  I was thinking about building a structure with pvc piping that would allow me to raise the light another 2 feet or so but since it's so close to the end i will just forget that idea for now and when I grow out that OG Kush (i'll probably make a better log then) I can build it then.  Hope you enjoy the pictures.  :bigblunt::bongload:

UPDATE: Flowering Day 61! Day 123 overall

I harvested the smallest plant on Monday or Tuesday night.  I can't remember when.  It was a piss pour showing and I'm not posting any pics of that shit.  It's nothing you guys would care to see anyway.  It gives me a heady high and I am able to operate just fine while under the influence.  It's a good morning bud i suppose.  I have dried it already and it's curing.  I also rolled up a blunt of it tonight.  Got me lifted!  Anyway, that's just the warm up.  These updates are drawing to a close and there will likely only be a few more before harvest and hash making.  I'll be making bubble hash with the other four plants.  Here's the pics from tonight.  As you can see throughout this thread I have been playing with the digital white balancing.  It's got a setting specifically for HPS lights.  and i have been changing the tint.  Which one looks the best?  The ones with the kinda red background are the one's with just flash and no specific setting for white balance.

EDIT:
I think I will start the flush pretty soon.  The trichomes are all still clear.  A lot of the hairs have changed to orange as well, as you can see.  I got like 40 gallons of distilled h20 as well.  I'm all set!

UPDATE: Flowering Day 69! Day 131 overall

I started the flush on Monday night.  I used distilled water and added 30 grams of carbologic.  I think when i change the res again I will use just water and ph down.  Several of these buds are denser than most anything I have ever seen.  I can't wait to get the final weight of all this.  My plan is to tear down the three smaller plants and do those then do the largest one last.  I want to see the weight off that one individually.  gimme another week to 10 days.......

Thanks guys!  Toad, i haven't seen you around in a while.  I think I will be happier once I get 2 or 3 grows under my belt.  I think that the value of this crop will not equal my investment.  But I have realized a few things along the way that can really help decrease my costs.  I haven't really been working with a budget with this project.  I have been fortunate enough to be able to purchase whatever I needed as I went along.  I have learned a lot from this experience and I can't wait to do a proper grow with some great weed instead of this bagseed.  What's interesting though is the fact that this bud looks like some of the dankest bud I've bought over the years.  I guess that is just reflective of the care that I have put into these plants.

UPDATE: Flowering Day 75!  Dave 137 overall

I got my new lens in yesterday.  Unfortunately it sucks taking pictures of the plants because i need them to be a bit more stable for extreme macro photography.  The lens is a 105mm f/2.8g ed-if af-s vr micro-nikkor lens.  It's badass and it should be for what it cost.  But I should be able to do some pretty cool shit with it as I figure it out over the next few months.  It's tricky to use.  I also ordered some extension tubes that increases the focal depth of the lens.  This is used for trich photography from what i have gathered.  I am still going to have to get a decent flash for it.  But for now I have some pictures.  As I checked them out right before I took these pictures I noticed some serious growth over the last 24 hours.  Previously the pistils of the largest buds of the bunch hadn't even started to change to brown.  Today they are very brown.  Trichs are still white and I think they are just about to start turning amber.  I think i mentioned already that I'd like to have 50/50 mix of milky white / amber colored trichs.  I haven't really had the time to figure this macro lens out yet so please bear with me as I ride the learning curve.  Hope you enjoy!

Here's a pic of the camera set up i am using (note - this isn't a picture of me.)  I didn't take these pics with the lens hood either.  As a matter of fact, i haven't even tried it yet.

getting clossserrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..................see you in a week..........

UPDATE: Flowering Day 83! Day 145 overall

Thanks awakened I'm glad it's been helpful for someone else besides me.  I have noticed a big change over the last 8 days.  The temps have gotten much colder and during the lights on period it gets to around 70 tops about 12" from the light.  Some of the buds are starting to purple up.  It's not really too noticable in these pictures but it's beautiful to the naked eye.  I can't wait to try this out.  I give em a squeeze and they feel as dense as any i've ever had.  They make my fingers all sticky with just a light touch too.  i'm in love fellas. :heart:

I was planning on having my chop down this weekend but will hold off for another 7 days or so.  We'll see.  This grow has lasted WAY too long.  Sorry to keep everyone in suspense of the money shots.  Patience please.   Doesn't look too bad for a first grow.  If i do say so myself.  It's taking about 7 minutes to load 3 pictures now so I will rant a bit about all this.  It's letting me upload 4 mb pictures again.  Weird.  I've been flushing the plants since wednesday night with only distilled h20.  ph'd to 5.8.  The one thing that worries me about all of this is that there really is no smell.  I have an air freshener in there along with a deionizer and in the day time (night cycle for the plants) i keep the door closed.  When the sun goes down the lights come on and I open the door.  I guess that and changing and checking the rez are the major time consumers involved.  It isn't too much all things considered.  I have tried not to speculate how much these 4 remaining plants will yield but seeing them today under the normal lights I was inspired.  You see I went in about 10 minutes before the HPS came on and turned on the cfl to snap these pictures.

Wow!

Fantastic! Very impressive first harvest. I love the purple leaf but It may be indicative of some type of disorder...  :strokebeard3:

Thanks for following this everyone and thanks for your comments too!  I will be doing another log at the end of the summer.  Hopefully I can do a bit better than this one.

That discoloration was probably due to the near month that I was feeding it only H20.  lol.  I also think I mentioned somewhere in here that I consciously tried to get the temps down as much as I could to get some purple in the buds.  It worked too.   Some of the large buds are purple on one side (the side that was facing the outside door) and the other half would be green.  I thought that was pretty cool.  I also have some hash that's from the scissors I trimmed with and from the bubble bags.  Not nearly as much as I wanted but it's something.  Thanks again guys!
