t0ad's adventure in gardening... a grow journal.
    #129622 - 10/06/08 05:18 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all.

Nothing special, 5 seeds from bag of some decent weed came across recently; planted in peat pods and three days later 2" sprouts.  Will include basic pictures soon.

STEP 1:  Seedling
========================================

Went to the Depot of Homes & purchased those jiffy caps (peat pods) which i think are great to start off w/ your seeds.  A neat trick is taking a matchbox, removing the rough side (strike pad) & gluing it on the inside of the box.  place seeds inside and shake vigorously for 10 seconds.  This can help thin the edge of the seed allowing for more water penetration.

Subjected such seeds in peat pods, added warm water & closed the lid and watch it create its own greenhouse effect.. OOOooOOooo.... AaaaaAaaaahhh...  then into rockwool

Step 2:  Vegetation
========================================

(1) 85W CFL + (2) 32W T8  = for right now, just to get the seedlings started on they're journey to eventual happiness.  Cups holding seedlings in special box w/ reflective material so enough light bounces around.  Expect veggie stage in a week

Steps to COME!
========================================
The actual "vegetation" period will last about two - three weeks + 6-7 expected flowering times.

Flowering Stage : HPS 400W.  I have included my closet plans in a separate thread of this forum.

Thanks for viewing, check back for updates ... probably just weekly or randomly to answer any questions or to respond to comments to better my grow.  It's been a while since I've had such luck :frown:

and the last time i grew weed it looked like this... in my bing (mini bong)

That's what I was wondering, haha. I have already decided that once I get my setup figured out I am going to just find a way to get feminized seeds.

online 8-)  feminized if i remember correctly are when a light/enviromentally stressed plant turns hermy it pollinates itself, has to be a female first on the gene pool though.

or spend $$$ online.  If I get more males than fems in this run again I'm sticking to fem seeds

i feel like i had stunted they're growth and they have finally reverted back to normal growth.  This is about . . . two weeks old?  From here is the actual veggie stage now i have 2-3 sets of norm leaves & i had started juicin' them 2-3 days ago, and they are doing much happier since.  I came home from work and it smelled like weed in my grow room   new growth is expanding in size and a lush green.  So far, so good!

looking at a week and a half ago (11/22 when i updated the 1st post as my restart date) to now, they have grown exponentially, so i don't feel as if i have dangered their health too bad.

just an update.  After changing the tea mix the plants have been reacting very positively.

i'd say a week and a half and i'm going to start to put 12/12.  plants should have increased in size about 4x by then since this is the period of rapid growth...  I am going to purchase some mylar, clean the top of the tub & mylar the surface to reflect light up as I only have a 400W HPS.  I am going to be building my grown screen soon to help w/ reflectivity & light disbursement.  For now anyway.  I have a lot of extra cash coming to me in the next few weeks so i'll be making a way to get the odor to be displaced when it comes to the ripening stage. . . . assuming i have at least one femm out of the now 4 plants.  I removed one, it was suffering an failing on life support and I Felt that even if it survived I wouldn't want to smoke its bud if it were a femm, bad genes at that point.

I hope to at least get 1 or 2 of these four.  Last time i had 3 plants were all males, so, i was not happy.

Has anyone ever used the product ONA?  Odor Neutralizing Agent...  it's a gel that is supposed to help mask up other smells

so I have switched over to my hps light (24hrs), it has an agromax bulb with supposed +30% blue spectrum. But how much blue is that as these are reddish lights???  30% of standard can still mean squat!  Still have my 85w CFL on to just add to the mix.  Hoping to get these guys to stretch, dont want to vegg them much longer than a week or so.  keepen'em short & gonna make a small screen for them.  I figured, hey, i'll switch to the more intense, lumenated light for a week and a half and the plant will start to think about node production and onto preflowering we go!
:awesome:

found a MH-to-HPS conversion bulb online  $32 super excited (hooray 1000bulbs.com), asked for it for xmas from my old lady lol we can see where my priorities are better bud growth and a stronger veg stage.  Been happy with CFLs but fiending for MH.  gonna pick up some flowering nutes & other things this weekend.

well, hopefully right after work would have to make it to the hydro shop before 6  which can be done.  Next paycheck as it gets into the flowering stage I am going to get the soluble tri-pack from FF which is Open Sesame, Cha Ching & Beastie Bloomz along with a standard treatment of Big Bloom & Tiger Bloom.  Im gonna have some sexy ladies!

I hope i get at least 2 / 4 females.  I'd hope and love for them all!! but, realistic I deserve at least 2 females from the last time god flipped me off and gave me 3 males.  You would figure at least one would be female, and i was sure that it was!  until i saw two...then three staminates on one node bundled together and eventually extend outward freaking balls!!!!!

will take pictures tomorrow, the babies have doubled in size.

I've begun to notice nodes or primordial staminates on the plants (pre flowers) --- I am actually unhappy at this stage that this has occurred, i feel it may be due to some unwanted stress the plants have had.  They seem to be flourishing now, but i have begun to notice possible zinc deficiencies & a leaf with necrotic scars. I contribute this all to ph irregularity; this problem is fixed, though, so i dont fear the worse.  I come home and a plant had wilted, gave him a big boost of nutes from the top and was set; i get i need to get some sprayers in the tub afterall, was hoping to not have to.

Plants have the feeding roots established in the tub now, this may be my biggest issue yet but as i had said, problem solved.

I have seen a big issue with zinc absorption this entire time, my new leaves come out curled up and twisted but as they grow out they turn to normal.  I have noticed nitrogen deficiencies as well mainly starting with the oldest leaves first, which can be related to a lack of zinc, as zinc is vital for nitrogen absorption.  I had this problem once before and i had corrected it, but i guess I will have to recalculate the formula inside the tub.  Zinc doesn't appear to be on the thin side of any spectrum, so i dont see why zinc would have that issue and the rest of my plant be a bright green.

i just went ahead and ph balanced everything.  The excitement im having right now is endless, i only bought ph UP as i had ph Down already, and without a ph meter / drops / strips i was afraid to burn my plants to death, so, i had found a solution and i expect a full recovery within days.

this is day three of the HPS light... adjusted pH to perfecto 6.0 today & reformulated the mixture with more big bloom & a heavy top water dose.  Tomorrow I am  letting it dry (THE ROCKWOOL) and then I will flush w/ pH adjusted water.  I feel happy to be able to offer pH balance to my plants.  I hope to see this leaf fringing to cease within the next two days as the plants adjust.

I have added some STICKER/PENETRATOR & Big Bloom to a spray bottle to juice up the plants to get rid of the stress asap.  Plants an hour later have already perked up a lot.

DWC ftw

after a closer examination, i think i may have good luck this time.  I think i may have only one male, but we will see.  I am thinking of moving up 12/12 as because these plant had progressed incredibly maturity wise switching under, or should I keep 24/0 and keep'em vegging???  I read that males can show even through 24/0 . . .

decisions decisions...  if i go into flowering now, i tink they will max out @ 3' tall.  Where i lack in height may come from bushiness, it has a lot of vegetative growth that may catch up in height and i am hoping the one I topped is a female.  I think it will be.  I am so far hoping 3/1 from the way the preflowers appear, but until im 1 1/2 weeks into 12/12 or till i can tell its a male (check everyday twice a day at this point) i will have some snipping todo.  Not looking to breed right now just get some homegrown weed!

judging from the pre flowers i think so far a 50% sex rate!  two of the plants' preflower are very swollen and pointy. one has the damned little balls..... the other one i can't tell yet they arent profound.  I have to get some tiger bloom asap and change over the nutrient level  -  They are much much happier now and have begun to really grow.  Another week at this level and I will be very happy.  Last two days I've only top fed them ph-adjusted water, hoping to clean up any salt buildup that may be on the rockwool from weeks of nutrient abuse . . .

plants seem to get plenty of nutrients from the concoction below, a mixture of grow big, big bloom, fish oil & MagiCal.  Easing off on the nitrogen as my plants seem to got a little dark, so im flushing accordingly.

All in all so far so good, at least happy w/ a possible 2 / 4 ratio, both same plant type also.  Hoping for a third, it looks promising but the preflowers are not developed so I will wait it out, flower for two weeks and make the final discretion.

Adding the HPS light has stretched these babies out, glad that I switched over.  I have seen very lengthy growth through the plant, some main stems are trying to come from the bottom.

The one I fear a male is the one that I Topped.

by flowering, i think he's referring to a 12/12 light cycle.  You can really tell the difference in the light in those pictures.  I'd like to see some more too.  :P  Can you do macro's with your camera?

starting 12/12 today, keeping them small.  They are preflower'd up which is the only reason im flowering now.  I did wanna keep'em short i suppose!  Friday I am going to buy the bloom nutes and start changing the flavor of the nute mix.

I love fox farm products, my plants are always so happy using them I think I may stick w/ Tiger Bloom & Big Bloom. Next grow is goin to be the professional grow, this is "god damn i need some weed and im broke so lets grow weed instead" idea.  I have been using big bloom + grow big recently + fish oil and the plants have been very happy.  I think the red light pushed them into maturity faster, even though there was 24/0.

I am almost certain i have 2 for 2 male/female ratio, which I can deal with for now until I prove it.  I can see very strong differences between preflowers.
:vaped:

i'll take pictures tomorrow.

My biggest complaint, is one of the suspected females feeding roots still have not come out of the cup, and the size difference between the plants are noticeable.  So I feel i am forced to top feed until it happens, not sure why it hasn't as some of the plants root systems have become very advanced.  I think the next grow, i will use shorter cups to allow roots to grow into the water sooner.  I think this would dramatically improve things as once i had noticed feeder roots, the plants exploded in size.

Plus I think those first couple grows are just to get the basics down and learning from your own mistakes. I know that's how I was when I first started growing mushrooms

Look forward to seeing some pictures tomorrow

had a 2nd tub and change the top over, now in bloom nutes, i think it may be a bit high on the ppm meter, will be watching the plants to see reaction over the next two hours or so.

day 2 in 12/12, still haven't seen defining female characteristics or the pistils but the bloom nutes should help that, waiting the first week.

One of the plants (a suspected female) has not created a complex rooting system into the tank yet.
Removed a confirmed male today.  I can spot these bastards out big time.

pH is 6.0 on the drop tests.

so I've taken out the last confirmed male, the other two are definately females from the difference of preflowers.  Very excited.  The male plant i just removed smelled lovely, almost tempted to smoke him! lol jk.

I am hoping even though this batch may be small that I can get resinated buds .

very nice. I think that will be my biggest problem when I start growing that being identifying the difference between my male plants and female plants

how many plants do you think a 400 watt HPS light be adequate for?

6 small ones or 4 good (3+ feet) tall. . .  I think 400w hps does 1.2m (meters) squared adequately.

Hopefully the light wont be too expensive then or it might not be worth it. I want something that will give me a far yield. How much dry weight do you personally get off of each plant, just an estimate

this time probably not much, they are small.  Last grow-op was outside, which is unfair as a result of inside.... but personally i hope for at least an 1/2 oz each, these babies are small; except one is stretching quite a bit and i topped one so the underbranches would come up and bush out a bit.

Hey man glad to see your back.  your plants look great btw!

So, an update is due I suppose.

This week has been a challenging, and very argumentatively the most annoying week that I have had.  First, it starts like this...

So i go fishing, right, and I assume that everything is gonna be OK while I'm smoking joints out in lake kissimmee bass fishing, right, and so here I am enjoying my time when my girlfriend calls me.  Mind you, its about 11pm @ night and i've got a submersible lantern in the water & am enjoying myself and the conversation goes as follows:

"Hello?"

"Hey honey somethings wrong with your light"

"What are you talking about?"

"Your light is still on"

"Shit WTF, is the timer on?"

"Yeah"

"Whats the dial say"

"3pm"

"It's fucking eleven!!"

"Alex must have messed with it"

"ALEX?!"

"Yeah, i was watching him"

")%@#($&@)#(%&*@#()*%@)#%"

and the rest is unnecessary.

The idea here is that my old lady was watching her retarded brother Alex.  Somehow, he was playing in the room (which this is a closet grow, mind you) and he must have somehow turned & played with the timer dial.
After having her fix it and banned him forever from our room with my mighty power and since I wear the pants thats how it goes. . .  So, undoubtably, i noticed delayed growth in one of my females, I believe she became stressed from the extra light and then not having a standard 12hour dark period.  The other plant seems to suffer still from not being rooted into the tub, this has come as a disappointment, and I think it is coming time to change the tub again.  There has become a smell to the nutrients, and I am sure the plants could use a refresher at this point.  I have already sinced added pH balanced water (2 gals) to drop the EC content a bit and the plants have reacted positively to that also.  They have since perked up a bit; one plant is becoming a shrub while the other is very sativa like in growth and is exhibiting a lot of floral noding.  Very happy, will probably clone her over the other.  The other had seen too much stress, I worry for its quality but we'll see how that goes.

and the many tops, and bushing out from middle.

Those were from tonight,

Below is from christmas day.

Looking sexy!  Hopefully they weren't too stressed out.  So was the light cycle just fucked up or was there light 24/7 for a few days?

light cycle got screwed up and one plant really had delayed and stunted growth patterns, i wish that it would stretch a bit with the red light but its a no go.  The other one is stretching nicely

they have already started pre-flowering, and are in actvie 12/12 phase so flowering period.

i have had some issues as of late, some nasty signs of deficiencies.  I cannot decide whether P or K, and I question whether its just salt buildup.  The nutrient solution has begun to have an overpowering smell - I am changing it today and having it a lighter concentration of nutrients, i think this is where i went wrong.  The plant shows signs of root rot, which can be related to toxic-salt (high EC) and the overly high pH can be attributed similarly i think, or at least the battle i have had with it.

I am definately gonna bend over that tall one. . .

Curling tips of leaves downward or upward is usually a sign of overfertilization?  The last two days i have top-fed pH balanced water to rid of any excess salts built up in the cups to see if anything had gotten locked out or what

the fan leaves have turned yellow w/ dark brown/black splotches and necrotic patches on some.  I have ripped them off to help w/ transpiration.  Any ideas?

starting w/ the oldest ones first, and the newer growth on top seems to have a brighter inner color of the leaves, signs of a deficiency of sorts. What, i dont know as I tihnk i have covered all the nutes w/ my selection so i start to think about salt buildup at this point, nute lock out. something to that effect

i just foliar fed a weak tiger-bloom nutrient solution.  Hoping this will stop any P def I may have, K i have heard is not suggested to supplement that way.  I've come to a decision on how I am going to change my nutrients.  I will keep the bath (the tub) w/ only Tiger bloom & I will feed top GH omni certified organic fish oil once or twice a week for K supplement + other things.  I may purchase a MagiCal bottle just in case...

im gonna flip the plants around too, so that the opposite sides of the plant now will recieve light. . . notice in the pictures how the tallest is always on the riight? well, it'll be on the left now.

I have seen the excess salt that this stuff can lead on the old tub that didnt rinse out.  I took some tylex and a shower-bath-soap-spungy-thing and cleaned the tub and rinsed it well.... the preperations are underway

    #174417 - 01/02/09 02:56 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

so now, I am waiting for the old tub to finish draining only half way there. . . the plants are now sitting in the tub, flipped over as i stated before & I noticed on the taller plant (whose roots never grew into the tub) was not close to the geolite on the bottom of the cup and so as it was somewhat dried up i pushed it down the cup as far and as gently as I could, and now it sits much deeper.  Watering it on top will be easier and tis will help soak it and get the root to grow down.

I kept the concentration somewhat mild.  I wanted the plants to get a chance to get a lot of water and then the chemicals involved, I think this will help keep the EC low.  if there becomes deficiencies, i will add more nutrient...

the pH a steady 6.0; I am looking for improvements.  The old tub looked and had a very uncooperative smell; i will take a picture and post it.

when I get a little but of cash I am gonna get the nozzles to put a submersible pump.  I think that would have stopped the problem I had with the other tank.  Looking at it, I think the concentration I used was too strong, or that I should not use certain nutrients a certain way.  My pH was always extremely high coming home from work; and I adjusted daily.  Water I adjusted in a gallon is still 6.0 pH a week later - so there had to be an overabundance of nutrient which caused a high EC which burnt the hell out of my plant, thats what I believe is what happened.

OK.

Plants are suffering big time, though today I had finally got the cash to purchase GH FloraMicro, more ph Down, & DNF 0-50-30 --- . . . I know the plants will love this stuff a lot, and w/ the micro it should whack out any nutrient deficiencies i have right now out of the ball park.

I am embarassed to post photos, this is not my normal quality grow, so once the plants recover I will show pictures.

The tall sativa like plant has MANY MANY flowering budsites.  They are filling in with thick pistils & beginning to form calyxes.  I can't wait for them to swell up the next month or so.

My bushy topped plant has begun to stretch its colas out and the budsites are appearing on that plant as well, with this nutrient getup, it should really kick in much faster, esp w/ the DNF bloom stuff.  No distinct smell just yet.

Waiting for a few days to pass on so I can see the change in the plants, i am desiring to see a much more positive change.    the fan leaves have mostly all yellowed up and shriveled, and now the new growth exhibits magnesium deficiencies which from what I understand is often common indoors.

Wish me luck, i haven't had much recently. lol

the one who had been improving is still doing very well.  The leaves had begun to become straight & the budding sites are developing well.  It too is showing small MG deficiencies.  adding epsom salt today to supplement, and i wonder if the other plant is suffering from severe MG deficiency.

The tips of the leaves are burnt; and some have curled upwards into a tiny compact ball shape; this is definately magnesium.  Also, according to the marijuana bible by jorge cervantes mg def can in severe cases cause yellowing & dying of leaves from bottom to top.

epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, it is one of the most simplest forms it omes in, cheap & effective, only downside i think would be if it made your PPMs shoot and sky rocket up, but I had found a small (decent) amt for a foliar spray of MAGICAL by technaflora from a sample bottle i thought i threw away & used that for hte mean time, but im adding epsom salt to the reservoir tomorrow.

you can mix it w/ water I have read 2tblspoons per gallon, but i am going to do 5 for my 15g reservoir, so 1tbspn for every 3 gallons since there is already a minute amount of magnesium from the TIger Bloom that I had been using, i guess it was not enough for the plants growth.

So the plant that is recovering is showing even more signs of recovery - the leaves on the budsights have straightened out for the most part, no droopiness!  His plant roots have re-thickened up.  Previously they had rotted a bit, but they have rebirthed themselves and are lookings nice.

the other plant, is near death.

I look back and notice that the plant that is near death had not ever been able to grow a root system into the water below, i question and wonder if this caused a congested root issue with the plant and whether the plant has any chances or not of surviving.  still keeping a good 1 day feed 1 day water 1 day dry regiment which has worked for my plants before

Just to bring this post to a close...

Final words:

So, upon my HPS light dying as the pistils turned orange I had to unfortunately allow for my plant to take a week into darkness before it was even ripe, this undoubtable stopped production and upon execution & trimming of the plant I discovered it had grown male flowers.  No seeds are found, so I had averted that problem all together;  I am currently curing in mason jars w/ some orange slices.  Will have to cure a long time to get rid of that premature taste, it gives a good stone though from what i had smoked after a 'quick dry'.

The plant had suffered a little until the end of its days, I had since just watched the pH to allow the plant to progress, it stayed at a point and did not progress worse so I figure it would had only been the N def. you see once in a while as every other part of the plant was healthy minus a few fan leaves yellowing & dying.

For a small plant, i probably scored a fat quarter or more of nugs, which is about or a little more than the $$$ i invested in this project (minus the lamp i had from before) so I figure I broke even considering all the losses I did manage to have in this grow.

I have since given a lot of thought to the setup I encompassed this grow log around and had come to a defining change that I will implement with my next round of grows.  I am going to refrain from using rock wool this time around, and will replace with the peat pellets straight into hydroton.  I will also plant them farther down into the cups to allow the roots to grow at a faster rate, and also supplying a root+ complex -  Also will probably mix a small amount of verm + peat layer to add for moisture control on the initial transplant.

I feel the importance of a TDS meter with this log, I feel that was the only error I provided myself was the lack of exact control on this grow.  I guess I have control issues, LOL.  W/o the proper understanding of the dissolved solids & salt content and a lack also of a hygrometer (humidity meter).  I believe the resin output is incredibly enhanced with proper conditions, my closet being drier I have come with little resin on the buds but also it was somewhat premature... still, the buds were maybe only a few days early if anything and I dont feel Resin would have impacted that greatly in such a short time at least not from my experiences...

I have since also built a monkey screen for the plants, so that the light is reflected as much as possible.  This was done with 6 sides.  I am going to attach mylar to this once I purchase a roll, and this will increase my yield capability as well.

So, i was surfing 1000bulbs.com; and if you hadnt seen that site yet, you really should.  The deals on lights is incredible, if your on a budget a $8 400w HPS bulbs, ballasts for $70 and $40 MH to HPS conversion bulb; so you dont even have to buy a separate ballast or setup.... l337 shit man...

Anyway, i had been very busy and I am sorry that this log had died as it had, I meant for it to be stream lined with updates every few days.

  ....

I have begun the germination process today on my White Widow seeds...

It sounds like you need to get your priorities in order man.  Grow log > all.  lol.

But seriously, I think a tds/ec meter will really help ya out.  I couldn't imagine trying to estimate nute concentration, but i haven't completed a single grow yet.  Good luck with your future grows!

Is the bloom nutrient solution you are using made by agricultural organics, they are referred to as the "Yellow bottles". I heard a lot of good reviews about them. ??

Any help would be appreciated.

Toad hasn't posted since march.  I wish he'd come back too.  I don't know the answer to your question.
