Lighting EMERGENCY! - Problem Solved <3
    #11057 - 04/23/08 09:16 PM (16 years, 5 days ago)

Oddly enough, my ballast crapped out while I was in the room...what are the chances?

Nothing major, just stopped working.
Thank god no fire :awesome:

I have plenty of other ballasts on hand
But they are all wired for 220.

I took one apart and compared it to the dead one
the only difference is the wire going to the power
is labeled 110 in the old ballast and
is labeled 220 in the new ballast

If i switch the new ballast wire to the 110 wire
will my house burn down?

yeah that's what i am proposing.

switching it from the 220 wire to the 110 wire

is that all i have to do to convert it?

Thanks!

I wouldn't chance it. Unless it's a multi-voltage ballast (in which case it would have a labeled plate inside saying something like 110/220/480 etc..), then doubling the input voltage would likely fry it.

Then again, I'm no electrical engineer, so take that with a grain of salt if you dare.

oh, so you're downsizing the wire? I read the first post wrong I guess.

In that case I would think you'd be fine.

Yeah downsizing.

Upon closer inspection...the wire that is connected now says 240, I'm going to switch it to the 120.

I wonder about the ground...

Hmmmm, i really want to get my light back on, but i dont want to electrocute myself when i plug it in - or burn my house down

what a dilemma...

you will be fine .... just make sure you have wire nuts or something safe for your connections...

the ground wire in the ballest goes to the ground  wire in your cord...

Well Fuck, now I keep blowing the fuse...

I really need to re-wire those outlets in that room...but I am scared of getting died.

They are on separate fuses, so really it is the correct solution

Anyone have any tips on how not to get electrocuted? Besides turning the breaker off? Maybe I should buy one of those live wire testers are well?

BTW, my breaker box isn't labeled so i won't know if it's off...

you have to find a way to know if it's off or you won't really be safe. Just plug in a cheap living room lamp or fan or something and when you see/hear it turn off you'll know you flipped the right switch.

I'm pretty good with electricity so I could probably help you I'm still trying to figure out what you did though. So did you splice your old 210 wire and rewired a 110/120 on to plug into a standard outlet?

Do you have a watts controller or seperate unit you plug your lights into or do you just plug them into your wall?

Your circuit breaker is going off because you are drawing too many amps from whatever source you are using. Standard outlets use either 15 or 20 amp breakers, check your amperage rating on all the things you have plugged into your outlets and figure out which circuit they are on. Just reduce your amperage to lower than whatever the breaker rating is (15 or 20 amps).

Also, If you did you splice the wires make sure its not getting hot, if the gauge of the wire is too small till will get very hot and is a big no no.

Actually what happened is, I live in a house that is about 35 years young.

All the wiring is silver and copper.
Two of the outlets in the room have stopped working.

The ballast problem is fixed. It's just the outlets are burnt out or something.
So I am hoping changing the outlet with a new one will fix it. (the thing the plug plugs into on the wall)

I can't plug something into it to test if it's on because the it's broken to begin with. The wires could still be live even though the outlet itself isn't working.

Yes very good chance that the wires ARE live. The outlet didn't blow recently did it, its just 35 years old? Anyway sounds like you've got it under control.

Well one of them stopped working when the ballast crapped out.

The other one died a year ago...

I replaced all the outlets in the entire house when I was renovating...all except for my laundry/grow room.

Hahaha, Success!

Both outlets rewired and working...

I don't want to think about what was happening in the second outlet box...

Lots of crispy wire casings in there...
