How can I save my sprouts?
    #692762 - 11/09/13 01:18 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

The farther I get along in this project, my sprouts seem to bend and ultimately droop down.

I am using damp coco coir on my window sill. Is there something else I should be doing, and how can I save them?

So, a couple 40watt CFLs? If they're healthily green, they'll prop right back up with enough light?

Well you will want to bury the stem with more soil to help support it, then give it more light.

And more like 4-6 CFL's man.  What are you intentions here?  What's the plan?

Hello there cyclonicthunder  Welcome to the growery!

cfls will work fine for those seedlings, but not for very long. You will want the cfls VERY close to the seedlings...I'd say no more than 6 inches away. What are planning to use to veg and flower out your plants?

I would definitely prop up the seedlings that have fallen over and any that seem unstable. I use popsicle sticks on my seedlings if some get flimsy just after sprouting.

You will need to get some wind on those youngins as well. It will help strengthen the stems and keep them from falling over. You want just enough of a breeze that causes the plants to gently wiggle.

Good luck man. If you have any other questions fire away. :vaped:

Edit: Damn it hawk you beat me to it

I just bought four CFL's that deliver 1600 lumens each. My intentions are to grow them to a seedling, and then transplant them to bigger pots of coco coir, and use magnesium and calcium for nutrients. Going to be using a closet and CFL's.

So, I should bury them until they stand up? I've tried using a popsicle stick but they're too limp to post them to it.

So a small fan to fire a breeze across?

Thanks for the pleasant replies, a relief to the Shroomery.

Bury them to about a half inch to an inch from the leaves.

If your using coir,  you're going to need more than calcium and magnesium.

It sounds like you may benefit from buying a book or two about horticulture

Yea, he's going to need more than just cal/mag to feed his plants with.  Tap water has enough solids and minerals in it to support marijuana growth in the seedling phase though.  He's also going to need a PH tester to make sure the PH is within acceptable range for growing marijuana through out it's entire life cycle.  Improper PH causes the roots to lock out nutrients.  Before he uses coco coir without a basic knowledge of growing cannabis, I'd recommend he use a soil-less mix of a good top soil and perlite at a 60/40 ratio - topsoil to perlite, feeding his plants hydroponically by hand with (at the least) a well balanced base "grow" nutrient for veg, and a well balanced base "bloom" nutrient for the flowering stage.

cyclonicthunder, place more growing medium into your containers to about 1/4 inch from the top of your containers.  Be sure not to bury any of the tops of plants.  Blowing a light breeze across the seedlings causes cells in the main stalk to tear.  The plant rebuilds the cells and gets stronger as a result.  Much like what happens to our muscles when we workout or something.  Also, the gentle breeze from the fan is enough to keep CFL's and your plants' canopy cool enough to not cause any of the issues a garden that is too high in temperature can have like what stress or slowed nutrient uptake.  Ultimately I agree with what hawksapprentice said about you gaining from buying and (more importantly) reading a book or two about horticulture.  More specifically, a few books about the horticulture of cannabis.

I recently used 2 18w 800 lumen 6500k CFL and kept them about 2 inches from sprouts/seedlings for 2 weeks and they got no higher than 3 inches. Although I doubt just those 2 CFL would cut it for growing beyond what I used them for.

CFL's are great for raising seedlings and rooting clones.  CFL's do alright for veg too.  Florescent light bulbs only give the intensest light they have to offer just 4-5 inches from the bulb.  After that 5 inches from the bulb, light intensity from CFL's diminishes greatly.  This is why CFL's aren't my favorite for flowering because budding marijuana plants have to grow tall in order to produce buds.

To make the most out of that little 4-5 inches of the light intensity florescents have to offer, during veg I LST the plants so that they can not grow over 4 inches tall.  With a couple of fans running in the garden the lamps stay cool enough so that the plants can grow straight into the light without causing the plants any heat stress.
