Growing in a new Climate
    #647872 - 11/25/12 10:10 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys. I just moved to the Northwest from AZ. In AZ I had learned to battle the heat and the dryness, but now I'm facing quite the opposite dilemma. It is always raining, and it's hella cold outside! The only spot in my new house that seems reasonable to grow in is the garage. It is a 1 car garage, so it isn't too large. I just want to be sure I can keep it warm enough in there. What do you guys use to keep your grow areas warm? Any efficient heater recommendations that are also fairly inexpensive? Also, what are the precautions I need to take to fight the humidity? Any and all Northwest growing tips would be fucking amazing. Thanks guys.  :jah:

Humidity is just the way it is around here.  A/C's help a bit, you can also buy dehumidifiers.

If ya go big enough you wont need to worry about the cold :cookiemonster:  You'll be trying to keep it cold.

But in all honesty, I like those oil filled portable radiators with some fans.  You'll have to adjust how many you need depending on your space and how many lights you're running in there.

Do you have a link for something like that? Just wondering what to look for, and where...thanks, dude!

Powdery Mildew can be a bitch....uhhh....I dunno.  Any problems you see with a damper environment are going present themselves.

Ok, here's another question: the house that i was living in before i moved was owned by myself and my lady, so i was able to cut any ventilation holes i saw necessary. well, this house is being rented, and i really don't think sawing circular holes in the ceiling would be the most wise decision. this means that my stinky/hot air will be blowing directly into my grow space. i'm thinking that the hot air will work in my benefit and act as a heater (during the winter at least. however, the smell factor is definitely a concern. i live in the city, so within close proximity to other people. once upon a time, Hawk, you told me about an air filtering method where you just hook a fan to a carbon filter and have it constantly cleaning the air in the grow room, while not necessarily directing the air outside of the room but letting it constantly cycle through...remember that? anyways, lemme know if you have any ideas. thanks!

Yeah, I use a 12" Inline/Carbon Scrubber and just scrub the smell inside the room.  Keep in mind, depending on how many plants your running, at the peak of flowering it may still have some stink.

4 or 500 bucks.

And you have to replace the carbon filter every year and a half or so.

Depends on how cold it is and how many lights you're running.  I would get all your lights setup and do a dry run to see what the temps are going to be like.  Then go from there.

I'm pretty sure that the temp will be fine on it's own during the day (for the most part). The night time is what I'm worried about. I could cycle it so my lights are on at night, but then I can't work on them without having to stay up super late, which fuckin sucks.

Is 50-60 degrees too cold for them? I think that's what the temp gets to in there at night....

50-60 would be just fine.  Get a digital thermometer that's able to record the high and low.  Run your system and see what the temps get to.  If it's getting down to the 50's I would get one of those heaters.

You already have powdery mildew?  Your local hydro store will have burners and the sulfur.  Go local man.  If they don't I'll find something online, but check with them first.
