Extracts and decarboxylation question
    #604035 - 01/05/12 04:15 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello,

from my limited knowledge I understand that decarboxylation is a heating process to conver THC-acid (not active) into THC and some other inactives into actives. Does this apply to dried plant material too? or is natural drying enough to naturally decarboxylate?

Also, when performing a THC extraction with organic solvents, would it give more actives if you decarboxylate plant material before or after extraction?

Thank you

If you look at a piece of paper, you are witnessing the chemical reaction of oxidation. It may not look like it, but technically the reaction is taking place, however slow it may be. That paper will start to turn yellow, then brown, then disintegrate and even turn to ash if you give it long enough. If you set that piece of paper on fire, then you can watch the same reaction happen much more quickly.

The same thing goes for THC. By heating it, you are speeding up decarboxylation to an appreciable rate.

As for the solubility question, it would seem to me that THC-COOH is more polar than THC since that COOH substituent is polar. Thus, decarboxylating would make the THC more soluble in non polar alkanes (like dissolves like) such as butane, pentane, and hexane.

If you're extracting in acetone, ethanol, or IPA, then I wouldn't worry about it as much, but i dont think it would hurt.
