As far as the earth soil in many areas, it tends to turn clay-ish after receiving amounts of water. So that means not much air circulation and the roots have no room to grow.

Are you on a budget? I have yet to use vermiculite for any grows, so I say go for adding some perlite and a little sand to the soil.

perlite or pumice would be much better suited for the job. Vermiculite can actually be pretty moisture retentive. I'd probably get something organic in the mix too for better structure. Fine bark, coco coir, or even better- good compost.

Don't forget about nutrients too. I like to use slow release organic granular fertilizers for my cacti.
