How to adjust the ph of peat?
    #589062 - 09/27/11 03:08 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

So I have some peat and perlite. I want to make a 50/50 mix to use as growing medium. I read that peat naturally has an acidic ph and needs adjusting. I happen to already have some Pennington Fast-Acting Lime. I read somewhere that lime will not raise the ph above 7ish and therefore you really can not add too much. Do you guys think I could just mix a bunch of that Pennington Fast-Acting Lime in with the peat and perlite and the ph would be ok?

If I was you I'd just go out and buy some standard potting soil.

Creating your own soils is something I would conisder moderatly difficult and something you should only attempt after you have a few grows under your belt.

Thanks for the info. I made the mistake of buying some miracle grow potting mix. My seedlings are barely a week old and they are yellow as a banana. I think the soil is burning the shit out of them. So I am going to make a soiless mix. Any help is appreciated.

strate peatmoss has a perfect ph without lime. if you can transplant them without destroying their rootsystem them put um in some peat and let any water drain out of bottom of the pot. put um under a 23ish watt compact flourescent or in a window that gets >4 hours of sun. you shouldn't really ever use mg 6month potting mixes for seed starting...got an picz?
