Alaska Outdoor Help
    #579131 - 08/18/11 03:59 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, so im growing outdoors in alaska for the first time, i have a healthy plant thats been flowering for about 5 days now and was wondering if i will have enough time. the temperature is only around 65-70 during the days now and drops to around 50 at night. by september the temperatures could be around 40 at night and by october it could be in the 20's or 30's. here is a picture of how far along the plant is....and if necessary can i transplant inside if it starts to get to cold?Plant seems to be very healthy and tolerant to the cold but im still unsure

If you are going to bring it indoors, I would do it now. Although, you chance bringing pests inside with along with it. Are you growing in a container, or in-ground?

Growing in ground. It's supposed to rain and be in the fifties for the next ten days. Can I dig all around it and bring it in?

I would if I wanted to keep it. Especially if it's gonna be down in the 40s soon!

If you are going to have to dig it up, dig at least a foot around the plant and try to avoid chopping the roots, especially the tap root. Depending on how established it is, you are going to do some damage. Try to keep the majority of the rootball intact to minimize shock to the plant. Transplant into a well-drained container of suitable size.

What kind of lighting do you have? That is the biggest issue you face in determining if it is worth the effort.

I bought a hps but I plan on moving it around the house from window to window for natural sunlight. In Alaska you're allowed up to 25 plants and I only have 2 so I'm not worried about it being spotted. I'm going to Germany for a week on the 24th tho so I don't know what to do.

You should probably have at least 400w of lighting. You could possibly get away with watering heavy the day you leave. Put the light on a 12/12 timer. It would be better, safer if you had someone trustworthy to watch the plants for you. Maybe just leave the plants outdoors for now, or in a window that isn't visible to passersby. You don't really want to light them up while you are away, that could pose a fire risk.

Yea, I think ill just transplant it, let it recover inside under lamps on 12/12 then when I leave ill put it outside until I get back and hope for the best. Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

Be prepared for pests as well. Moving a plant from outside to inside you're running the risk of bringing in mites, aphids, thrips, etc etc. And yes, you should have them under a decent light and not in a window. I would keep it outside in the ground until you get BACK from wherever you are going. If you dig it up and transplant it, it is going to go through some shock. So putting it through that shock while you are not there to take care of it is a bad idea IMO.
