Hey, in the next day or two im going to my sites to prepare my plots.
The areas are on ridges with dry chalky ground ut with loads of bushes and shrubs growing so cant be that bad. Im thinking of adding to with better soil from near by mixed with coffee, molasses. Nothing over the top but do you think it would be adequate.
All the prepared areas will be next to running springs, should I be worried about be to wet? Or would putting them near but not close be enough for the roots to get water?
I'd also like to add that as seedlings im keeping them under 24/0 light then after one month or month and half going outside which in July will be 16h light. Would that be to much of a shock?
So I should look to do 20/4 or 18/6? Or would starting 2 weeks 24 then each week reduce 1h a time till 17/7? As my thinking to this is that I get the benefit of long light periods from the start but simulating the light its going to get outside mid July which will be 16/8.

Does the term "hardening off" ring any bells? I swear, it was just talked about mere days ago, in this very forum, I believe...
I cant find any reference to ''hardening off'' on the site but find it using google and ok makes sence but not really posible unless I can build some form of shade on a discrete gurilla grow, but dowt it.
Reducing the amount of light gradually from 18 hours down to 12 hours would be what would happen naturally with the sun, so I can't see anything wrong with it. However, I think it would be more efficient indoors to just go from 18/6 to 12/12. As for hardening off, there should be a better term for it lol. I was under the impression that sunlight was the least of a plants worries when going outside. It's near impossible if not impossible to burn a plant with light alone and no excess heat. And I would assume if changing a plants schedule from 24/0 to 18/6 is harmful, then changing from 18/6 to 12/12 would be just as bad. Just don't bounce the schedule around, once their on a cycle keep them on it. Isn't the plant mostly getting used to wind, rain, and pests? IME those are what I have to worry about with indoor plants being put outside

Hardning off does make sence too me for the fact that they are used to the indoor light and then going out into harsher light. But UK sun is not intense so wont be doing that. Still thinking about the cycle, go them on 24/0 at the moment to help catch up to what I require, plus I keep dehydrating from the heat so want them out. I will just drop from 24/0 to 20/4 after 2 weeks growth.
