I personally think its fear of a generation of people thinking for themselves, and thinking in general. What are your thoughts?

Because its to easy to manufacture, and there's the possibility that big business/government couldn't achieve maximum profit.

Harry J. Anslinger 
is the definite reason why weed is illegal. He's the guy behind all of the original myths portraying cannabis as a dangerous drug.
The reason why it's still illegal (in my own words) at least in the U.S. Is because Americans for the longest time have let the government influence and educate them on the topic of cannabis, unfortunately. Everyone believed the BS and now finally after decades of ridiculousness. Laws are starting to change.

Its not even all of that. Its because tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceutical companies stand to lose way too much money.
That, and maybe the government is too worried about its peoples minds being free
