I have just noticed tiny little flying black bugs. tiny black in color, shiny blueish wings, long legs. fast when running. Don't fly real well. looks like gnats wanted to be sure.
I appoligise for the picture quality. It came out great on my phone but not so much when uploaded thanks as always for any help.

Yes, they are commin out of the soil. No it doesn't seem like there are alot. To get the pictures it took a while of watching all my pots for movement.

a few things you can do . first quit watering your soil so much allow it to dry between waterings . second put a layer of sand 2 inches in the top of your containers or .. go buy some mosquito dunks make a tea and water your plants. Fungus gnats are a direct result of to much moisture... Hope this helps ....HeAdy

thanks for the help. on that note..... how much should I be watering? I have read many threads on watering and still haven't come up with a quantity. a gallon a week, half a gallon a week? that seems like alot of water to me but I could be wrong.

This helped me. The gnats have not been hurting my plants, but I have never seen them before this fall. I think I have started to water a little more than usual. I am going to try kicking things back a bit to see if I can get rid of them.
Thanks!

You water when the plants need to be watered. After you water, pick up your plant. Get a feel for the weight of it. It may take 2-6 days depending on the size of your pots or bags, but you will notice a big change in weight. When I started growing, I had to let my plants wilt just a little before I got a grasp on the right time to water. before you water, pick them up again. Now get a feel for the light weight. You do this every time and you get use to the weights. Thats how I do it. You can also keep an eye on the top 2-3 inches of soil.
As the plants get older the time between waterings should get shorter. the plants are growing and using more water, but the wet and dry weights should say consistent to the feel.
