A politician GP who challenged Luxembourg’s drug laws when he illegally prescribed cannabis to patients was given a dressing down on Tuesday.
Earlier this month Jean Colombera made headlines when police investigated claims he had prescribed cannabis to patients.
During a parliamentary debate on Tuesday into the matter he was told by health minister Mars di Bartolomeo that he had interpreted the law to suit himself.
"Mr Colombera has interpreted the law in his own way. We can discuss the use of cannabis but the way in which he has begun this debate has been counterproductive."
Colombera had earlier told News352 that he had been prescribing cannabis for its therapeutic qualities to patients with serious illnesses since 2009.
He recently set up a clinic in Ettelbrück where he conducts lectures to doctors, outlining the healing qualities of the plant for people with serious illnesses, such as Parkinsons and cancer. Until the beginning of October he also prescribed cannabis in « very small doses » to his patients before police put a stop to it.
The deputy defended the use of the drug and said that he had tried to debate the matter in parliament prior to the investigation.
The health minister did not entirely dismiss the deputy's beliefs. He said : "I am aware of recent studies looking into the therapeutic virtues of cannabis. But there is no doubt that it is a drug. I am not against medication which contains components of the plant, but the medication must be identified as such."
