Can I go out and buy red and blue led nodes and build a LED lighting system myself? Are the LED's that are used for this special at all? Or are they just LEDs? Looks like I could go out and buy the parts and build one of these cheap to me. Am I missing something?

It's not paranoia when they really are out to get you
Wouldn't recommend just going out and buying any old LED bulb. I have seen a number of 1w bulbs but nothing other than whats sold inside the bulbs. There are new LEDs with like 3w but I can't even find the 1w, I definitely cannot find the 3w ones. Look into getting LED with those wattages. A 1x1 panel with 1000 tiny LEDs wont get you very far unless they've got some kick.
I saw a post about some dude making his own LED panels somewhere on this site, you should check it out.
