So, I was just watching How Its Made (since theres a marathon of it on today, fuck yeah)...and they had pineapples on the show. They mentioned this stuff:
Quote: at this first bloom, farmers spray the plant with ethylene, a natural gas that stimulates full flowering. As that happens, the stem of the flower bunch thickens, and becomes bulbous.
I wiki'd it real quick, and I guess it is used as a plant hormone:
Quote: acts at trace levels throughout the life of the plant by stimulating or regulating the ripening of fruit, the opening of flowers, and the abscission (or shedding) of leaves.
Is this something that could be beneficial to cannabis plants? When I hear "natural gas that stimulates full flowering" it sounds pretty promising to me.
I googled ethylene and cannabis real quick, but most sources are at best...you guys around here seem to be the most educated when it comes to obscure shit like this.
So, anyone know anything about it? I see that it can be used to encourage the plant to be a female (banana peels)...but how about AFTER flowering commences?
-------------------- Of course it's happening inside your head. Why should that mean it isn't real?
Quote: the man said: burning of kerosene i think releases it
Well, I'm not so concerned with how to get it just yet...more if it is beneficial or not. But thanks for the tip, I run a kerosene heater all winter to save money on the damn furnace anyway.

there is no reason why a concentration of ethylene wouldnt start flowering. as far as making buds bigger i doubt ,ripen faster maybe, so might actually prevent them from getting as big as they can.

Hmm. Good point. However, that would make sativas more feasible for a commercial grower to work with.

Ethylene is used to make male plants produce female flowers at "high" concentrations.
If you want to try to use it to jump start flowering you're going to need to use lower concentrations for sure or at least I'd assume.
Ethylene is the hormone that causes plants to ripen. If you leave fruit in a sealed bag ethylene builds up and they ripen very quickly. Could possibly be used to shave some days of flowering but I don't know really.

Are you talking about the "myth" of ethylene causing male/female seeds to produce females? Some people on gardenscure put bananas at the base of their plants and claimed to have got all females.
