I think I may have a bunch of dead seeds, how can I tell?

Over the last 2 years or so I've collected all of the nice big brown tiger stripped seeds out of all the really good commercial I've come by & probably have a few hundred seeds and have kept them in a nice air tight vial in a generally cool area.
Even though it was a little late in the season, about a month ago we took about 12 of them and buried them in a couple inches of soil outside on a night where it rained and in a spot where it gets sunlight all day.
But nothing ever sprouted at all.... and we've checked a few times over the last few weeks & have never seen anything.
Any idea what could have happened?
Surely they cant be "old" could they? Any other way to tell what happened to them?
Is there a way to tell if the other couple hundred I have left are dead too? Or is planting them the only way?

Germinate like 10 in some water or in between some wet paper towels, and guess the ratio of how good they are from there.

It's entirely probable that the seeds were never viable to begin with. Seed germination requires two things, moisture and warm temperatures. So there's really not too many variables involved with planting a seed.
