Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg was yesterday facing calls from within his own party ranks to adopt a radical liberal agenda, legalising brothels, cannabis, and medically assisted dying.
Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies urged Mr Clegg --who is leading a government drive to scrap unnecessary and outdated legislation -- to follow the example of the Dutch when it comes to such issues.
"Maybe it's a consequence of our sanctimonious tabloid press, or an unwillingness here to confront the disproportionate influence of religious extremists, but when it comes to dealing with controversial issues like drugs, prostitution and medically assisted dying, the Dutch are simply more grown-up," he said.
