G-13 x Northern Lights and Purple Indica, ScrOG **updated pics 7/18**
    #406550 - 04/25/10 05:19 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

*** Updated 7/18 below  ****

Hello everybody. I've been meaning to do a grow log for a long while now just so I can more easily keep a photo and time record. What better place than the Growery.

I'm planning on doing a Screen of Green this go around to optimize my growing space. I grow in my spare bathroom so I have easy water access, I will also have the plants sitting on a grate shelf on top of the bathtub for easy cleanup and drainage. Not to mention the fiberglass in the shower provides great light reflection!

Speaking of light, for this stage I'm using a single 400w MH with a running time of 24hrs. When I switch to flowering I will be using two 400w HPS.

I'm also using Roots Organic soil, for those who are unfamiliar with it the ingredient list is as follows...
  Coco fiber
  Peat moss
  Perlite
  Pumice
  Compost
  Mulch
  Worm castings
  Bat guano
  Kelp meal
  Fish bone meal
  Soybean meal
  Prilled rock phosphate
  Feather meal
  Greensand
  Leonardite
  Alfalfa Meal
  Oyster shell flower
  Glacial rock dust

This will be my 2nd grow, my last one was over a year ago and was from clones, not seedlings, so we'll see how it turns out!

Now on with the log...

April 8th in the AM
Starting with old old seeds I forgot I had. I am germinating 5 out of 10 of G-13 x Northern Lights, and only 3 of my 10 Purple Indica. Hopefully I get some femmies!

April 9th in the PM - Day 1
All five GNL seeds germinated but only one of the three PI, placed in peatmoss pods.

April 14th
Seedlings sprung roots out of pods, transplated to 1gal pots.

April 18th
First pics, 9 days after germination. Temp is sitting at a steady 78ยบ with 50-55 rH.

April 23rd - Day 14
More pics, 2 weeks old. The one on the very top right is the PI, all the other five are GNL.

April 25th
Started feeding with PBP and Cal/Mag pH balanced to 6. Growth seems fast and vigorous. First 7 blade fans are beginning to spread out.

May 5th - 3 weeks 5 days

These plants are definitely starting to take advantage of the bigger pots, they're growing faster than ever.

June 1st - 7 weeks 4 days

Took clones and put the girls under the screen. Turned out to get 5 females out of 6 seedlings. Not bad.

The tall one all the way to the right was 3 ft 4 before I put it under the screen at 12" above the rim of the pots.

and also a new family addition to the grow room! He's a baby Western Toad, and in no time at all he'll be eating full grown mice.

Update from June 26th11 weeks 2 days

I'll be starting the 12/12 cycle in a couple weeks from today after one last training.

2/3rds the way through training down the screen

done training

still a bit of foilage under there that will be clipped off soon but the screen is pretty filled up by this point. Time to start budding.

May 2nd - 3 weeks 2 days

Transplanted today, but 3 days ago a few problems started to appear on 4 of the 6 plants when the soil got a little on the dry side when I was out of the house for 2 days. I've been watering with pH balanced water, but tested the runoff for the first time when I started noticing problems and it is showing a pH of 8+. Even with watering 5 pH the runoff is still easily 8 or above (the soil wasn't very saturated when doing the 5pH runoff test). I never saw problems like this using the same exact routine on clones. (maybe it was that short stint of dryness?)

On with the pics...

First, here is a pic of the group. The Purple Indica is on the top left.

Here is a pic of whatever problem the P.I. is having, has necrotic spots on a few of the lower fan leafs.

Now here is some pics of the problems that 3 out of the 5 g-13xNL are having.

These pictures are pretty consistent showing about the same problem throughout the 3 plants. But, one of the three also has one fan leaf looking like this:

From doing some reading on this forum, I'd say it almost looks like an MG def. but I can't be totally sure because the spotting and browning looks pretty inconsistent with the pics of MG def. I've seen around.

Question is, is this a pH problem, or is it a nutrient def. problem? I'll let you experts help me out before my assumptions kill my seed babies!

May 5th - 3 weeks 5 days

The good fellas over at the Doc Diagnosis forum gave me a few pointers.  After giving my plants a good flush the problems have halted and the plants are thriving. They've gained 2" in height since last night with no signs of deficiency.

I'm a little worried about how big they're getting. I wasn't wanting to train them with the screen until I eliminated the males so I could more easily optimize my canopy. Would it be a good idea to start training now and then eliminate the males when they show sex then fill in the gaps in the canopy with the females? Or should I just wait until they show signs of sex to start training?
Guess I'll just wing it seeing as this is my first ScrOG grow. I'm beginning to realize for ScrOG it'd be a way better optimization of time to go from clones.

I see my 3rd grow going much smoother!

On with some pics...

I'm beginning to think one or two of these g-13/NL seeds were in fact not g-13/NL at all. The plant in the front middle is without a doubt more prominently sativa. (I'm thinking the person I got these seeds from snatched a few of the g-13/NL seeds and replaced them with something else.)

Heres a little mutation action. The node on this one plant only sprung a fan leaf on one side.

Heres a pic of the plant I suspect is an imposter. It's lanky and much taller than the others. (on the left)

the other 5 are very tight in their branching.

2 of the plants are starting to show what I suspect is pre-flowers. If anybody can provide some insight on whether male plants start showing pre-flower before females, it'd be appreciated.

These plants are definitely starting to take advantage of the bigger pots, they're growing faster than ever.

Since these things are growing so dang fast I'm thinking they'll tell me their sex real soon if those are indeed pre-flowers starting to emerge. I was just wondering if those pics actually indicate pre-flowering (even though it's too early to tell sex)? I never paid attention to pre-flowers in my last grow since I was going from clones.

If you drop to 18/6 they will more than likely show faster.

I'm going to light proof my door jam tonight then switch to 18/6 per DieselB's recommendation tomorrow. We'll see how long it takes them to show sex. Hopefully soon so I can start with the LST.

Those plants might be what they are supposed to be. No two seeds are ever the same.

The reason I say I might have imposter seeds in this group comes from a long story involving the grower I got them from.

But you may be right, only time will tell! I'm excited to see these babies grow either way.

It's all gravy!

4 of the 6 plants are definitely starting to pop out their pre-flowers but no sex yet. I'm going to be switching the lights off for the first time this afternoon for 6 hours then giving them a 18/6 cycle.

Hopefully they'll show sex soon because they're all hitting the 15" tall mark and it's time to start training! They've definitely stretched a ton since the transplant. the nodes on the bottom half of the plants are within every inch, since transplant the nodes are every 3-4 inches.

Keep in mind that switching from 24/0 -> 18/6 -> 12/12 is going to stress your plants in a way that 24/0 -> 12/12 will not. I would either LST them all now anyways and start flowering or flower clones to determine sex and keep pre-vegging. Just my two cents.

Aw really. Alright then. I'm just concerned for space reasons. It's going to be real cramped in there.

I'll take your advice and hang up my screen this weekend. I'm going to top them for clones and then start the LST. I'll just chop and pull the males from the screen and hopefully fill in the gaps with the fems so I can keep an even canopy and optimize my space as best as possible.

I missed the part about SCROG actually, I thought you were doing LST only. I didn't mean to recommend you train unsexed plants into a screen. In that case I would keep waiting...you will see pre-flowers before a clone would show sex anyways.

Alright glad that was cleared up. Haha. I'm hoping those pics I showed above are in fact pre-flowers beginning to emerge. Hopefully they all show pistils instead of sacks here soon!

May 9th - 4 weeks 2 days (or 30 days)

Identified the first male out of the group of 6. One other might possibly be male from what I can see but it's still kind of early to tell. Hopefully we'll see some hairs soon.

Both those pics you commented on above were actually of the same plant and it hasn't matured enough to show sex quite yet. I believe it's leaning towards female though.
