CFL for Clones
    #377500 - 03/02/10 11:05 PM (14 years, 30 days ago)

Hello Growery,

I was wondering if my 15w/118v/60Hz cool wattage flouro "under cabinet" housing light that i had laying around the house would be sufficient to supply lighting to an aero-cloner w/ 15 plugs (netpots)

15 watts seems a little low to me.  I would add a couple more in there.

So what kind of wattage am I looking for here, perhaps a combination of a couple 23w cfl bulbs?  Where can i find those adapters for regular outlets?  Thanks

Yeah 40 watts would be sufficient.  Personally I just use a shop light with 2 T-12's.  They put out 40 watt's each and are pretty friggin cheap.  I'm not sure what your talking about with the outlet thing.

yeah i dont have the horizontal space to have 4' tubes, i gotta go with something more compact.  I saw a picture somewhere in a post that had two pairs of CFL bulbs connected directly to a power strip via two standard outlet adapters that plugged into the wall (in this case a power strip)

I would consider ditching the whole CFL idea all together and look into a 250 watt metal halide.

i have a 250w metal halide for vegging, but due to limited horizontal space i have to stack my cloner on top of my veg box.  grow space is divided in half with 24 hr. light on one side and 12/12 in the other.  if space didn't matter i would definitely put the cloner under the MH.

If your space is big enough the 3 or 4 bulb bathroom vanity fixtures are good options(about 10 bucks at lowes or HD). I screw a Y splitter into every other socket for even more bulbs.

They do cost a little more then some other options but only by a few bucks and they have the benefit of mounting hardware and holes. you can suspend them but it is CFL's are more efficient on there sides.

I prefer cfls when cloning because they generate so little heat, but yes 40 watts equivalent about a foot above them(don't use reflectors), one per square foot-ish.

I am not quite sure why you would ever not use a reflector unless the lights are just at the top of the box any ways, and the box is sufficiently reflective. Letting half your lights output go up is just counter intuitive.

I think he's referring to rooting clones.  When you are rooting you don't need much light at all, so I think he was talking about that otherwise why would you ever suggest removing reflectors, I would just pull the lights further away.  You can root a tray of CFL's under 1 bigger CFL or a couple regular sized bulbs.

sorry I was just a bit miffed by the advice. I can see how if your ventilation is not up to snuff and you do not use a humidity dome and have your lights to close that would be a problem.

Yes I do.. I know how to use them. HID's just better simulate the sun.
Honestly. I think CFL's are perfect for rooting clones and supporting seedling growth.
You know. Check out what I said here about http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/376516

Thanks Inbred_Gimp, I'm honored that you would mention me for such a thing....

But I have to warn you "ICanFeelTheRain", it wasn't cheap....The entire 107 watt CFL "rig" costed about $70 for everything, NOT including tools and things like drill bits. I don't know how much HID lights cost, but I'm pretty sure $70 is getting pretty close to a full set-up (althought it would have to be small right, like 75 watts? i really don't know.)

I know that Dr. Penguin made a HPS light jerry-rig using a security light he bought at Home Depot, whcih didn't cost that much money, I believe. Its pretty cool. Can't remember where I saw it though.....

But if you descide on a 100 watt CFL design like mine, just shoot me a :pm:, and I'll gladdly help you out buddy. :awesome:

But if you wanna go the HID route, contact Dr. Penguin (the guy with the adorable avatar) about his improv'd HPS light...I actually thought about doing it, but then I was like "too late, I bought all this stuff. Can't back out now." But I'm glad I did it, because it was pretty fun to make....:smile2:

But from my limited experience, CFL's still produce quite a bit of heat. Even with a full-time little PC fan on and a 12" oscilliating fan, its at a toasty 80F. But from what I have read, with HID lights, its a lot hotter than CFL's, especially if you don't have a proper cooling system.
