The typical beginner seeks advice

Seems like a good deal.  Anyone see a catch?

And as I'm sure is already made obvious, I'm a complete newb here.  I'm wondering about air exchange.  In a small, let's say, 7x7 bedroom, would it be sufficient for one to simply leave the door open with a regular fan oscillating in the room? If not, what else can be done? There also exists the option of using a small closet.  How might such an environment receive proper air exchange to suit our friends (1 - 2)?

More ridiculous beginner questions to follow.

Looks like a good buy to me.  Let's see what others say about it.  I haven't worked with those bulbs before.  The goal with indoor growing (from my perspective) is to try to replicate all the positive aspects of outdoor growing but diminish all of the negative aspects of outdoor growing.  I think that's really the best way to grow the best weed in the world, but that's all subjective.  So you need to provide a good amount of air exchange.  I usually have a fan blowing on the top of the canopy, then another one blowing from lower in the rooom to higher in the room to recirculate the air, and yet a third one outside the grow room blowing right on the lower fan.  That's certainly not ideal, but it seems to do a great job.  watch your temperature too.  you dont want to burn the plants especially if your brand new to cultivation and are getting a couple of 400 watts.

Thanks for the input.

So for air exchange, you simply have two fans positioned around one another in the room, and another one outside it?

I've read that keeping a 400 W HPS at no closer than 7 inches from a plant should keep it in good shape.  Is there anything else one should be aware of to avoid overheating?

And is some kind of reflection necessary? Would it be a serious compromise to not use any?

And one more thing.  Forgive my total ignorance about lights, but that ebay listing says the light is only compatible with a certain ballast.  Just to be safe though, the light should work with any HPS ballast, right?

I know my concerns here are probably laughable.

Well it will be compatible with whatever wattage ballast it is. Also the reflector will direct more light towards your plant, so it is a good idea. You want ventilation because that light will get hot, especially if you have it in an enclosed space. Theroretically it will get as hot as the bulb in the space you have it in if there is no airflow. Plus you want airflow anyways for your plants.

What kind of air exchange setup might one use in a small closet?

Your questions aren't laughable, everyone was a beginner at one point!  I wouldn't run a light without a reflector, otherwise you're just wasting lumens and electricity.  At bare minimum you want a fan blowing across your canopy to rid the plants of the radiant heat from the light bulb.  It's good for the plants to move in the wind, so the stems become thicker and stronger.  And yes, deffinetly no closer than 7", I would say a foot away is a good distance.  Sodiums are powerful lights, the light penetrates a lot further than say fluorescents.

As for a small closet, if you were able to leave the door open or cracked, you could get away with one fan on your canopy.  However the better method would be to have a small outflow fan from your closet that vents somewhere.  Basically you just need a way to keep the air in the room from becoming stagnant.

You want to replace the air in your closet 2-3 times a minute I think. Let me look it up quick.

Ok THIS might be a laughable question. What kind of wattage with fluorescent would you need to match the capabilities of a 400w HPS? Or is that even possible?

No single fluorescent lightbulb is going to equal a 400 watt HPS. But you can get a bunch of CFLs and get a pretty good grow with them.

He's right, you would need a whole lot of fluoros to equal a 400wHPS.  Don't get the idea that fluoros aren't good though, they are fantastic for seedlings and vegging plants.  They just don't produce the high intesity light needed for good flowering.

Alright, what about a 150w HPS for flowering though?

Well, a 250w or larger would be ideal, but a 150w HPS would still be an ideal choice over any type of fluoros.  Also Sodium bulbs are an ideal flowering spectrum.  Even if you got some good flowering spectrum fluoros, they just don't put out the high lumen to watt ratio that HID lights like Sodiums and Halides do.

Yeah I feel you on that. I'm just on a tight budget, but want the dankiest buds I can possibly get with the budget I have.

I'm gonna exit the thread but watch over it for a while, I don't wanna take away from the OP's question.

I apologize!
