Good reflectors?
    #339331 - 01/03/10 09:03 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Since I got my new 400 Watt HPS, the light leeks very strongly through the cracks of the door.

Are there any really good reflectors you could recommend that could maybe stick, in a way, around the edges of the door to reflect the light and keep almost all of the light in?

aluminum foil would work. How close is your light to the plants?

Do you have a picture?

Maybe some aluminum ducting tape would be helpful for you.

Flat white such as styrofoam or computer paper reflects better than alluminum foil.  Foil creases and beams ligh mostly anywhere but where u want it.  I integraded foil, styrofoam and paper in my 2 square foot area, one 45 watt CFL turned into over 10000 lumens doing so.  hope this helps

I don't think this is a question of reflecting the light back on your grow area, rather how to prevent light leaks so the cabinet doesn't look like a night light.

Where are the main sources of your light leaks?  Top of the cab, middle where the doors meet, bottome of the cab?  There's ways around everything, but unless you can form a perfectly sealed join you're going to lose a little light to the outside world.

just use basic weather stripping.  It comes with an addhesive side and you can cut it to correct lengths.  Theres thin ones thick ones textured ones smooth ones.  Take a trip to home depot

I am going to post a link to the "best TYPE of reflector" to get but for the most part yea your light is leaking out meaning light can leak in, witch is not good (will mess with your 12/12 light). but on Jorge Cervantes ULTIMATE GROW DVD from high times. They say these are the best for getting every bit out of your light bulb. Look at the style of reflector this is considered the best from what I hear?

A batwing reflector?  I mean ya, I guess for increasing the light foot print they work pretty well.  But labeled as the best type of reflector....I'd say no.  You're much better going with a vented hood if growing in a small space as controlling temps with an open type of reflector is going to suck.

Yes! but from what I understand if you are going for max use of your bulb. This type/style reflector is best for getting the most out of your bulb, with the v right on top of your bulb is best for light distribution. Best for venting and everything probably not the best.

When growing in a wide open space, for instance converting an entire bedroom into a grow room, then yes I would totally advocate the use of bat wing reflectors.  When growing in small, confined spaces, cool tubes would the be the first option I'd suggest (with an optional reflector if needed) then an enclosed hood.

It's hard to say what's best because everything depends on your grow space.  What would work best for a commercial grower may not be the best option for a personal use grower.
